As someone also dyslexic, reading sentences wrong doesn't affect whether you should know if a whirlpool is deadly or not

Okay I was thinking that sounded weird, but wasn't sure if I misunderstood dyslexia. "He had no concept of time". I have never heard of this being a part of dyslexia, and I think the fact that he was a surfer would immediately disprove that anyway, as big wave surfing requires impeccable timing.
@whyjnot420
@whyjnot420 Жыл бұрын
@@dacypher22 "Concept of time" or more precisely time keeping here would be how you can tell if 15 min or 60 min or 180 min have passed. For an example of temporary loss of your concept of time, all you need do is look at any activity that felt like it took 5 min but was actually an hour or two, such as getting lost in a video game or a book. This has nothing to do with the timing of precise movements such as are needed when surfing, only the amount of time one spends surfing. That said, I have been around learning disorders (which is what dyslexia is) all of my life (over 40 years), dyslexia can effect the ability to keep time mentally. I have seen multiple explanations for exactly why this is, the following are possibilities afaik. It can cause people to simply act forgetful due to the brain not really connecting external stimuli with internal concepts, it might be an issue with a dyslexics penchant for non-linear thinking as time keeping requires good linear thought as it is a linear idea/concept itself, it might even be that a dyslexic relies more heavily on the limbic system rather than the logic center of the brain. These are simplified explanations and as I said possible reasons afaik, I am no doctor, I simply have my own learning disabilities (notably extremely severe ADHD) and have been in and amongst people with all sorts of disorders and conditions and whatnot since before I can remember (I was diagnosed with ADHD at 4, a full 2 years earlier than the early end of the range most people are diagnosed at, a result of early development of skills such as the ability to read combined with the severity of the disorder) If you want more information about dyslexia, this is readily available online. It is a fascinating subject, as are most well documented learning disabilities. edit: Just to point something out for clarity. For time keeping, it doesn't have to simply be minutes or hours, this also includes things such as the number of days that have past or the number of days until something. It is all about the ability or lack thereof to do this mentally. Personally I have enough trouble doing that with my brain alone to the point where I essentially force myself to memorize things related to time (i.e. it takes this long to go from here to there, it takes this long to do this and that activity, etc. etc.), and must utilize time pieces in order to do this with with any semblance of accuracy. When I do not have a clock, what a lot of people perceive as me actually being good at keeping time (in fact simply me remembering and seeing numbers and doing a little math in my head) goes right out the window. However things such as playing instruments in time, even changing time signatures mid song, were never an issue, what was an issue was forcing myself to actually do physical acts of keeping time (in the sense of playing music) such as tapping my toes. Also to note is that many of the precise movements we use for things ranging from playing video games, to playing an instrument to surfing, are about muscle memory as much if not more then they are about consciously making a specific action. (basically it is all about practice making perfect). Like I said, I have ADHD, not dyslexia, but there is a fair amount of overlap between the symptoms of ADHD and dyslexia. still the edit/addendum: I was thinking about how this might have had an impact on the outcome here and one thought popped into my head. Perhaps for him, without looking at a clock or simply when distractions such as having fun are present, his ability to keep time mentally was impacted about as severely as possible, thus making it so planning to swim down for a brief time, perhaps just a few seconds, caused him to swim down for much longer (relatively speaking), thus causing him to swim too deeply for his wetsuit to help.

Its maybe a failing of the english language that "tragic" is a word applied to both. The sister wasn't doing anything risky. Just living her life and got cancer. Her life ended when it was really just getting started. Clearly tragic. The brother was flirting with death on purpose. Definitely sad, but I think of tragedy as something that comes out of nowhere and strikes down people who were minding their business.

As someone who’s lost more than one loved one to preventable _and_ non-preventable circumstances, they’re both very different forms of grief. When it’s an unpredictable cause like cancer, it’s an agonizingly slow process through which you feel so hopeless that you’re almost relieved when their suffering is over. But those who go through that rollercoaster of not knowing whether they’ll live or die, from hope to no hope, damages the people around the dying person over time. People who have gone through that kind of grief often go through a period of semi-suicidal recklessness, because it makes them feel like they have some control over an uncontrollable world. Grief never helps anyone. It changes people. It makes you value your own life less, because you’ve already been exposed to death, and now it doesn’t seem so scary. And yet that fearlessness is often, paradoxically, what keeps you alive. Or it fails you when you least expect it.

I can relate to losing a sister to cancer. My sister died of myoblastoma of the frontal lobe October 31st 2004 at 18 years old (I was 12 years old). She even had the first tumor removed, went into remission & went on to culinary school (things were looking good) She started getting the headaches again but worse. Later that year she was diagnosed again but this time it was in a high risk area area of the brain and the "droplets" of said tumor had traveled to her spinal cord by then. Operating to remove the tumor could cost her, her life or cause life altering damage (loss of sight, smell, motor skill, etc). She decided to stop undergoing chemo and left the hospital to go home (where she received hospice care). Unfortunately she passed away 6 months later. It changed who I was and the trajectory of My life. Rest up Jacob and Danielle.

I am shocked it’s even possible to swim anywhere near a vortex like that, much less do it repeatedly for 20 minutes. I would’ve thought that power of moving water would render you entirely powerless to fight the downward force on the very first try. To his credit, the video describes him wisely approaching it a little at a time, testing the waters showed his exercise of judgment and awareness of safety and the risks.

It was fun to let the smaller vortexes spin you around. The stronger one would slowly pull you down until you made any effort and it spit you out. I was a chicken and would wuss out at about 10' depth every time. Guy with me had the gaul to allow it to take him. He was under 57 seconds (someone was timing). As far as I can tell, it is exclusively a reading/writing disorder, so I would love to know your sources on that since I can't find anything to back up what you said at the end there. Is it possible you meant to say ADHD?
@MorbidMidnight
@MorbidMidnight Жыл бұрын
The coroner's report specifically noted it; I'm no dyslexia expert but I do know that there have been cases where there have been gray matter density disparities between 'regular' people and people with dyslexia. My thought is that because his case of dyslexia was noted as a severe one, perhaps there was something regarding the density of the gray matter in his prefrontal cortex region that would lead them to that conclusion. How they reached it was not specifically noted in the report so that is just my speculation, but since it was in the official report I felt it necessary to include in the video.

I think the inclusion is appropriate. I’m diagnosed (3 times, for school accommodations) with dyslexia and ADHD. I would have a hard time attributing the dyslexia to any decisions immediately leading to his death. However, wether causal or correlative, many ‘neurodivergent’ (god I hate that word) people also suffer from chronic or periodic chemical imbalances (aka bipolar, anxiety, etc) which is more likely to cause irrational behavior. Plus the more of our whacky brains they can study, the better our scientific understanding will be.

The wetsuit compression is not a bad theory. It looks to me like there is a fair amount of buoyancy in that suit, he is head and shoulders out of the water at the surface. I’m guessing it’s a 5mm from the looks of it. He could clearly dive down without too much exertion but I still think you have to go pretty deep, like 7-10 msw for a suit like that to go neutral without weights, unless it was old and squashed. But add to that perhaps a strong downward pull and that might overcome some remaining buoyancy. I think, for me personally, weighted properly at some 5 kgs of lead - I’d go neutral in a 5mm at around 5 msw, but I have more body fat than he probably did, so take away 3 kgs of weight from that and it would probably be roughly the same for him. I’d say 2kgs would probably do it for a guy his size. He didn’t look weighted to me, however which is why I am speculating 7-10 metres for that extra bit of compression -, but add to that the down current and he could get in trouble shallower than that. These are very loose numbers and estimates and I have no idea how strong that whirlpool would be in terms of downward pull, or perhaps rather how strong the current would be along the bottom once down there. If the current had carved a trench, which it more than likely would, the current through there would have to be very strong to create a surface whirlpool like that, and the mass of moving water would be something else in that direction of travel. I know divers who got in trouble on drift dives at at serious depth in narrow straits for that very reason. Just to say, yeah not inconveiable on the whole.
@pieterveenders9793
@pieterveenders9793 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the bit in front of the quay is 8 to 10, perhaps even 12 meters deep. So that sounds about right. He was definitely at least 5 or 6 meters deep when his buyoancy was overcome by the whirlpool because you can see how deep he is in the original KZbin video.
