I'm right there with you, Annie. The most recent group is acceptable but the lead is mostly falsetto, without the natural high voice that blends seamlessly into the nasal falsetto that Flanagan, Wilson and Eichnenberger have mastered.

I don't think the audience is laughing in mockery at all, I think it's delight, and I think I can explain: this is an absolutely uncanny rendition of the original recording. The guys in this version of the FF were the very best - even Ross Barbour, one of the original founders of the group 50 years ago, said so. Their individual vocal ranges and mastery of harmony enable them here to perform a challenging arrangement live - it's like a time machine, like hearing the original Beach Boys live and young again. Brian was offered a job with the BB specifically because he totally NAILS Brian WIlson's parts. Listen to the applause at the end!! They're not laughing out of silliness or "hokeyness" - they're THRILLED at this unexpected surprise. There may be a few jazz snobs in the audience - looks like Brian may be thinking about that - but they're won over. Sure the words are "silly' - it's a teen-age love song. Guarantee they all went home talking about how great it was.

Yes Brian Eichenberger currently sings falsetto for the Mike Love Beach Boys Band...because in late 2019, Jeff Foskett announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 anaplastic thyroid cancer. Jeff had been singing the Falsetto parts in the touring Beach Boys and Brian Wilson Band for many years. Matt Jardine (Al's son) currently sings the Falsetto parts for the current Brian Wilson Band.

Brian Wilson took the U inquest harmony style of the original Four Freshmen and made it palatable to the general public while keeping it real for the purists. Now, THAT'S true genius. And this offspring group that is now the Four Freshmen know it and get it, and they nailed this tribute to the guy who always paid homage to his initial inspiration. Talk about what goes around...

On the laughing: I think it's the old thing where jazz fans have to maintain their hipness and act a bit supercilious and above things and so they laugh a bit at the Beach Boys. Now, I could sort of understand this if it was the Sixties. But really, this is 2010, they're actually showing how gauche they are.

They're laughing because they're imitating the Beach Boys famous song.. who rather followed the 4 Freshmen harmony. Brian Wilson copied the 4 Freshmen. Just American good humor. Both groups are American legends in their eras. You probably know all this.

@jpmcgrath35364 жыл бұрын
Arya Stark Roger L this group is a continuation of the four freshmen, they still use the name but don’t have any of the original members from the four freshmen that was popular in the early 50s. brian wilson was really influenced by the four freshmen and you can really hear that in a lot of the beach boys’ music, which the original four freshmen didn’t like because they felt like the beach boys ripped them off. there’s famously been some tension between the two that the audience is probably aware of, because at one point the idea of the four freshmen doing a beach boys song would have been outlandish. but now, since these younger four freshmen discovered the music of the original group through the beach boys, the hatchet has been buried between the two and i think this performance, while it is an excellent rendition of a beautiful song, is meant to be kind of a funny nod to the past animosity. i agree it’s a little weird the audience laughs all the way through but i think that might have been what they were going for.

They're laughing because "Surfer Girl" is the 1962 equivalent of a cheesy Bieber song today, and the Freshmen have always had kind of a comedy act going...today it's surfer girl, back then it was Ross Barbour's version of "Sweet Lorraine"...I love the Beach Boys, and Brian Wilson's melody and harmony are fantastic but hell, "Surfer Girl" is hokey, nobody took it seriously even then.

@Smooth0vibrations11 жыл бұрын
Yes, isn't it weird to think people hear things completely differently based off their ears? Like, if I listen to this I hear four distinct seperate tones and voices. An untrained ear or someone who doesn't listen to harmony music would hear an unidentifiable blend of the four.
