Thanks so much for this wonderful series. New Zealand is on our list of potential places to visit, but other than the 'typical' things most people know of, I didn't have a lot of ideas on what we'd like to see. This series has been so helpful!

I has the most wonderful experience watching you two hike a similar path I hiked with my friend in 1983. Back then we had no where near the protective and helpful gear you had. They gave us boots with nails coming out of the bottoms and a wooden broom stick, also with a big nail poking out of the bottom. Our guide was a gazelle, who leaped over giant cracks with ease. Not jumped with ease by me but didn't fall in. And when our helicopter landed on the glacier (they say "gla" with short a not long a) it slid sideways down a soft surface for what seemed like eternity until it stopped moving. Off we went. You really really made my day as now am a long retired semi disabled person who lives vicariously through videos like this. Thank you again for making my morning spectacular. When I drove down the west coast to Fox Glacier there were unpaved single lane stretches where the cars and the trains shared the same one-at-a-time traffic. Only place in the world where there is a sign approaching the bridge that said Look For Trains! We rented a Newman's Toyota pop up camper. Only negative experience was those horrifically hungry for human blood black flies. Needed the local apothecary's home made pink lotion and that took care of it! I even got to shear a sheep. It did help that I knew folks there who were most accommodating and helpful in planning our 2-week trip. So envious you are spending a few months. That is definitely the ultimate method to submerge yourself in other cultures and landscapes.

We did a helicopter hike at Fox Glacier back in 2010, and that is really the pinnacle of our whole 8-day south island trip, where each day is in fact full of fun and excitement.

@DanegerAndStacey I had the same experience as you guys, waited two days until the clouds/rain cleared and lucked in a flight, that was Jan 2010. The terminal was about 1km further down and that area you were climbing was a bit higher, so unfortunately yes, the glacier is slowly(?) shrinking : ( BTW, your series has been a delight to watch, covering so many places we travelled back then, I must get back to NZ. I spent years accessing the West Coast glaciers by foot. I could spend an afternoon ice climbing, walk back to my car, and be at the pub within a couple of hours - truly remarkable! Most people don't realize that within a decade (2012 - 19) foot access (for suitably experienced peeps) to the four main glaciers - Franz, Fox and the Tasman and Hooker on the other side of the divide has all been destroyed (mostly by heavy rainfall events). Catching a helicopter is certainly worth it for that 'once in a lifetime' experience, but for those of us that liked to plan a few missions down that way each year, well sadly, it is all over. What I have learned from this is that Climate Change isn't as simple as melting ice and rising sea levels. Super charged storms are going to be the problem, wrecking havoc on an increasingly regular basis.
@DanegerAndStacey4 жыл бұрын
That sounds incredible! Sad to hear the stories of how things have changed so much over the years though.
@simonmaney34384 жыл бұрын
@@DanegerAndStacey Thanks for the reply. Being able to explore the New Zealand glaciers, similar to what you did, but by simply parking the car and walking to them was one of New Zealand's (perhaps the Worlds) great experiences. Back in 2006-2012, it was about an hours walk from rainforest to ice - amazing. I was still able to access the Fox in 2018, but as I indicated, separate 2019 rainstorms destroyed access on both sides of the divide.

I recently subscribed to your channel and your videos are so well structured. Loving it. I am glad you guys could experience this Heli Hike. These tours get cancelled often. This is phenomenal, I held my breath hoping you guys would be able to do it and you did!! I think I’d be a bit scared to crawl through that arch, but I reckon I would do it, I’ve been through some small spaces 😂 but it still looks a tad scary and sometimes I’m a scaredy cat 🙀 hahaha

I think this did so bad because there was a KZbin issue the other day. Not sure if it was the same time you loaded. Maybe reload it?
