When creeping forward, can you operate just the clutch to edge forward and keep your right foot on the brake or do you need to add gas as well?
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
Try it with just the clutch - up to go in to slow. Use the brake only if you need to stop rolling back then use handbrake, get the bite and move forward again with clutch control.

Hi Dane, great videos, I just have a question on clutch control. I am from Wexford myself. For clutch control going around a sharp left turn, if you are in 2nd gear can you use clutch control to ease your way around the corner. I was going around a sharp left corner at a junction my driving test and I got a grade 3 for speed as the car drove on a bit itself, so if I put the clutch in while I am going around and use clutch control can I take my foot off the clutch and drive on then or would I have to go back into 2nd gear before I drive on, I’m a bit confused on it. If you could help that would be great. Thank you.
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean a T-junction? If the T-junction is anyway blind or a stop sign then you must definitely not be doing it in 2nd gear, clutch control is used in either first or reverse gear, trying to use clutch control in second gear is not advisable, where in Wexford was the junction?
@laurabury1214 жыл бұрын
Dane Tyghe okay thanks, it was the junction at whites hotel, when you turn to the left it brings you down last St. Vincent de Paul and then out on the hill by dunnes stores. I came around that left turn by whites hotel a bit too fast and I got a grade 3 I was just trying to figure out how to control the car coming around that corner for the future. Thanks.
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
Yes I see what you mean, you cannot do that junction in 2nd gear as you don't have full control, because it's so narrow and tight you need to slow right down and roll into first gear, this will give you more control. Check out the following video at 5.34 for an example of what I mean. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6vWXn9me8xobtE And in the video below at 8.45 I actually do the junction where you are talking about 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX3NdYmqnd1nmas

Hello to move off an a flat road without handbrake should you set gas first then find bite before moving off or find bite with footbrake on?

You should not be finding the bite with the footbrake on, the bite should only be found with the handbrake, you need to watch my video on when to use the handbrake.

I has my third lesson today and when stopping at the traffic lights with my foot on the clutch and brake when I move off do I take my foot of the brake and then find the bite and put my right foot on the accelerator for juice or find the bite with the clutch with my foot on the brake and then once I find the bite keep it still and then move my right foot to accelerator

If there is a hill at a junction that causes the car to roll back if hand break not on, do I use hill start to peep out at a junction? And for peeping out at a junction that you can’t see well do I have to use this method for the test or could i use a bit of acceleration and lift my leg off of the clutch slowly to peep out and if a car is coming then use clutch and break together to stop?

Should you be in neutral with handbrake on in traffic or can you leave it in gear with your foot on the clutch until the traffic starts moving
@DaneTygheletsdrive3 жыл бұрын
Leave in 1st gear with foot in on the clutch for a quicker take off, especially if at or near the top of the queue.

Nice explaining and making it clear so far. I have a question, what are correct ways to operate clutch to avoid " clutch riding" and unnecesary wear to clutch plates and other related mechanisms while maintaining smooth, efficent driving. I am particulary interested in petrol engine cars cause they are less "forgiving" than diesels as they have more torque on low revs.
@DaneTygheletsdrive6 жыл бұрын
+Ingemārs Volters I'm not a mechanic so I wouldn't comment with any authority on the mechanics of cars. But all this talk about wearing the clutch is completely overrated. Just use the clutch when you need to change gears and stop, and don't use it if you don't need it. I'm doing this job over 10 years and I've never had any problems whatsoever with clutch wear.
6 жыл бұрын
You put it dumb simple, but that I guess is the case in this matter. Thanks.

Clutch control is a very useful skill and should be learned and practiced by all learner drivers

When I push the clutch back in to slow and need to take it back up again to go forward do I need to press the accelerator a little? I always use the accelerator when creeping and none of my instructors have said anything I feel I'm doing something wrong now
@DaneTygheletsdrive3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need to use the juice but it might be a good idea if you are going uphill or if the car starts to shake or struggle. It can depend on the car and the hill.
@WorldArtObjective7 жыл бұрын
Here's a question. You are driving and you see traffic ahead which starts moving. Your car is in 2nd gear. But you end up doing around 10km/H. So you are at an awkward point where the clutch won't go into first gear because the speed is too fast but it will start cutting out and jumping if you are in 2nd gear because speed is too slow. Now to avoid this I push in the clutch and give it a bit more gas. Is this something you would lose marks over ?
@DaneTygheletsdrive7 жыл бұрын
Laimis Depends on the situation, I doubt it would be a serious fault. I advise going to first gear as the car is moving slowly then come off the clutch very slowly to avoid jumps. The other option is to let a longer gap develop between you and the line of traffic and this will make driving in second gear easier and more normal.
@WorldArtObjective7 жыл бұрын
Dane Tyghe yeah I would go into first but the car would need to be at a complete stop for me to do that. Otherwise I would have to jam it into first.. I hope an awkward scenario doesn't pop up during the test:)
@DaneTygheletsdrive7 жыл бұрын
+Laimis There should be no problem then giving it a bit of juice in 2nd gear as you put the clutch about half way in, as long as it doesn't rev up too much or make too much noise tbis would be regarded as acceptable clutch control.
@WorldArtObjective7 жыл бұрын
Well I hope that doesn't pop up. Just want to pass this test. I'm confident but come to it I don't want the nerves getting the better of me. Gotta get rid of my bad habits like one hand steering and letting the wheel come back to me due to power steering lol :)

Thanks for these great pointers Dane. If I am creeping out at a blind junction and find that a car is coming from my right, should I reverse back a few feet to allow that car to pass (as long as the space behind me is clear)?
@DaneTygheletsdrive2 жыл бұрын
First of all prevention is better than cure so try to edge out gently so this doesn't happen because your example sounds a bit dramatic. In an emergency you can reverse if required but if it gets to that drastic stage it might not be your day sadly.
@brendannolan25082 жыл бұрын
@@DaneTygheletsdrive sometimes (usually in a tight spot with a car double parked blocking the view to the right) I find I can't see to my right without edging out a fair bit into the road. But I'll do everything I can to avoid ending up like this on the test. Thanks again for all the great advice.

What's the difference between riding the clutch and clutch control?
@DaneTygheletsdrive5 жыл бұрын
Clutch control is the art of reversing or creeping forward in a safe and slow way with the clutch. Riding the clutch is resting on the clutch without a proper reason.

@DaneTygheletsdrive5 жыл бұрын
Just slow down early and gradually and avoid harsh and late braking, but at the same time try to focus on your own situation, there's no point in getting worried about the cars behind you. Check out this video I made on main roads kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKezd3VjhK2Nr80

Louis Greenleaf Well I've been teaching this in petrol cars for nearly 10 years so I'm happy to clarify that it works perfectly fine on both petrol and diesel. My car is a petrol and it works without any difficulty whatsoever once the learner gets the technique right.
