What if you want to downshift so you can accelerate faster to overtake? If you brake and then change down a gear, not only would you be slowing down substantially causing vehicles behind to brake, but also the vehicle you wished to overtake would have moved further up ahead due to the speed differential.

Hi Dane, your videos are brilliant!! It's helped me quite a bit. I just have a bit of problem with changing gears on my own car. See the problem is for my car, 30km is a little towards the higher side for 2nd gear (1800 rmp) , but is too low for gear 3 (1200 rpm). Would you know what can be done in this situation to drive smoothly at 30Km/h?

Thanks for your very informative video Dane. I have 2010 ford fiesta and It has this green arrow indication when to shift a gear. It's relatively early, every time I reach 2k rev. I feel that the car is still fine and can stay on lower gear a little bit longer (especially on 4th one). In this car 50kph is 5th gear. The arrow is a bit distracting and eventually forces me to go its way. I guess it's set up for very fuel efficient mode. Any advice?
@DaneTygheletsdrive5 жыл бұрын
That arrow is a useful guide but you can't be treating like the Gospel, whether you go up the gears should depend on what you see in front of you as opposed to a guideline from the car.

Hi Dane, just wanna say I really love your videos and they’ve honestly helped me so much. From looking online about down shifting, a lot of people are saying that you should rev match, is that something you’d recommend?
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
Don't know what you mean by rev match, do you want to translate?
@StevenHeatherton4 жыл бұрын
@@DaneTygheletsdrive basically, from what I’m understanding at least, it’s recommended that when down shifting gears you should clutch in, select the gear and then press the gas lightly, then release the clutch. Have you ever heard of this method? I personally have not and might have just confused myself by looking at this..
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
Even reading that comment makes me confused, for example if we followed this flawed logic then you would be accelerating on downhill junctions which is absolutely crazy. I would disregard whatever rubbish you heard about "rev matching" and focus on getting down the gears gradually aiming to hit 2nd gear approximately 20 metres from the junction. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
It's not a case of one way or another, it's about doing both as they are both helpful. You can't just generalise it as if we're talking about favourite characters from Game of Thrones. Engine braking alone is not going to be great on a steep downhill. Just like you won't need to brake very much on a flat surface. Have a look at the video below - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWi0m5mOqNGZo5I

Is it possible to block change from gear 5 to gear two when approaching a roundabout from a 100 km speed limit road or would the clutch be down for too long while breaking. Would you recommend 5 to 3 then go to gear 2? Thank you
@DaneTygheletsdrive4 жыл бұрын
5 to 2 is possible but it is quite a jump and some cars may struggle with it. Probably best to go one by one slowing down early and gradually. 5 to 3 could be OK it just depends on the speed and the situation, try come off the clutch slowly for a smooth gear change.

Keyo Fires Yes maybe I left that out but it is covered in many other videos on moving off and in the commentary drive videos. In order to secure the car the driver should pull up the handbrake and then then go to neutral gear, you'll know its neutral when you can easily shake the gearstick from left to right.
