After 11 years on L plates, I've finally passed my driving licence test today. And it's not that I've failed it dozens of times, I just couldn't force myself to go through all that. Didn't took a single lesson, all I did was watch some of your videos, and repeated all the road signs. 1,2,3 blind spot was really helpful! Thanks a lot for your videos, they're tremendously helpful!

I've been watching all your videos and am finding them very helpful in preparation for a trip to Ireland next week. I am from the US and we wouldn't ever reverse around a corner, so I am having trouble understanding when you would use this. Is it always legal to reverse around a corner? In the US, you would be required to go forward and turn around. Thanks again for these videos! Wish I had found them sooner than 3 days before my trip!

As for Reversing Around a Corner it's not that you'd necessarily be required to do the specific manoeuvre but the reverse around corner is a way to test the learner driver on multi-tasking while reversing such as going slow and steady, observing, steering technique and yielding to others. The angle of reversing around a corner is the same as reverse bay parking and reversing in and out of a driveway. So it has its merits.

Hi Dane, Thank you so much for the videos. After I have watched your videos, I am able to do reversing now. I have a test coming up soon. My instructor told me that I have to stop twice to cheek around including front side during the reverse. Do I need to do that ? I was just keeping my eye on the back with mirror and also blind spot check.. I have also another question that makes me very confused. When I need to change the lane to turn right before traffic lights , Do I need to do blind spot check with my shoulder ? I wasn't doing it but again My instructor told me to do that. Yes use it but don't look in it all the time, you must check over your shoulders mostly. The reversing camera can be handy as your cars technology should be embraced.

I have a full drive licence from my home country and I've never needed to do a reverse around the corner before. Reversing around a corner is something you'd do everyday but you don't realise it. If you are reversing in or out of a parking space or reversing at any kind of angle then the skills you acquire will help you - for example observation skills, clutch control and steering ability.

At the beginning of the manoeuvre are you allowded to roll your window or the passenger window down no more then 1 inch for the reverse around the corner to be able to hear any car coming before you see it so you can take neasary actions, I'm with a driving school that I dont wanna name but I've been told by one instructor that he highly recommends it and you should and then today I've been told that it's an instant fail by the same driving school just a different instructor. If you want to let down your window to hear more that's a good idea, I'm not aware of any limits in terms of inches. Anyone who tries to say its an instant fail is talking complete and utter rubbish.

The first tip is the whole reason I'm here. When stopping on the side of the road before the reverse I find it hard to judge a good distance between the car and the kurb. I don't want to be too close or I might mount it or too far away from it either. Any advice for me here?

Yes it depends on the door handle so when you park perfectly make a mental note of how the door handle overlaps the kerb. Then repeat when parking.

Good advice but I disagree strongly with not adjusting the wing mirrors down. You're crawling back and you've also got your interior mirror, so the risk of hitting a pedestrian etc is minimal. (Driving for 50 odd years).

I've been driving 20 years in the US and now I'm in Ireland, with all my American taught habits, embarking on my driving lessons. I'm having a tough time unlearning the hand over hand technique taught in the US for making turns. I'm finding it really difficult to do the hand to hand maneuver. In the driving test, do you have to stop completely and wait for them to pass when a car is coming towards you/behind you when reversing around the corner? Or do you just stop, show that you’ve seen them and continue?

Cars from behind - always stop and let them pass, if they can't or won't pass you then start the reverse again. Cars from the front - you might be OK to keep going but not on a tight road or if you are swinging wide, if unsure it's just best to yield to others.

Hi Dane, Just wondering when you indicate to pull up just past the corner which you wish to do the reverse around the corner at, should I subsequently cancel my indicator after I have pulled in and have applied the handbrake before I begin my turn? Hello, you should Indicate to move off when moving forward and indicate left to park. But there's no need to indicate while reversing around the corner as your reversing lights will be a signal of your intentions.

Dane i have a question , i am very confused about two things. I have my test on thursday and i am practising reverse around the corner. I am doing lessons with different driving instructor now than i did in the past. First one said while reversing around the corner that you can take your time ,they wont fail you for reversing slow, now the second instructor said im going to slow and need to move a bit faster, at the speed she wants me to reverse my first instructor said its too fast, thats why i am so confused. Also been watching some other videos on youtube on reversing around corner and this guy said you only have to check left mirror and back window, no looking to right mirror at all

You must go slow on the reverse, about slow walking pace is fine. The slower the better because you'll have more time to think, react and fix potential mistakes. Unless you are going at crawling pace it'll be grand. I can absolutely promise you that you simply must look in your right mirror and over your right shoulder especially before turning the wheel and on the bend. As you reverse around the corner there are huge blind spots over the right shoulder and failing to check those is not only risking a fault but is plain dangerous.
