Fun fact: Chiaki’s execution was actually hinted in the game. Around chapter 5(probably) in the morning at the lobby, if you decided to talk to Chiaki, she’ll tell you that she had a nightmare and couldn’t sleep well. The nightmare was her being *crushed by a tetris block* which is the exact same thing happens at the last part of her execution

I feel like Teru’s execution is really underrated, you have this character who wants to ignore his status as a country bumpkin in a small town, so much that he hates fast food altogether. He thinks it’s disgusting because fast food is something cheaply made for convenience, and people don’t really care about how it’s made. Not to mention that the beginning is practically a copy of Leon’s, to the point that he’s strapped to a pole after being yanked by a chain around his neck. Teruteru wants to be the opposite of plain, but his execution is an execution that’s already been done and made into something with virtually no effort.

I feel like for Gundham's execution for when the animals lift him up to Heaven is also supposed to be apart of Gundham's despair, as he sees himself as his evil God and stuff and probably wanted to go to Hell, but instead because of his kind deeds, he's forced up into heaven. Speaking of Chiaki and Monomi's execution, there's a part of it where they run into a glass wall and slide off it. I always interpreted it as them running into the forth wall (the invisible wall between fiction and reality that the audience sees through). Them failing to break it could symbolise their (or more specifically Chiaki's) disconnect from the other students (since she's an AI and not a real person). She's trapped in a fictional environment both in the sense that she's stuck in her videogame inspired punishment and also that she only exists inside the Neo World Program. And unlike how the surviving students later have the option to realise an exit to the simulation and manage to escape to the real world, Chiaki is unable to escape to reality due to her being an AI. That's how I interpret it anyway.

I guess the invisible wall also kind of plays into the video game aspect too. There's always an invisible wall in games to stop you from accessing an area you need to unlock or to prevent you from falling off the map. My interpretation of it is the invisible wall stopping Chiaki escaping her execution, showing that escaping Monokuma's punishment is impossible even for an AI

One thing I wanna point out is at the start of chiaki's execution, it is space invaders. In Danganronpa 3, she talks to Hajime about how it was a total classic and talked about how much she loved the game. I think those two things could be linked, like monokuma wanted to make her feel despair for a game she loved so deeply when she was alive.

I also thought: For Teruteru, the reason they chose that dish is in large part because he vehemently denied his more home-classic origins, both in his way of speaking and in trying to make fancier foods. Turning him into a simple, easy-to-find dish references his origins and that in death he won't have any dignity. For Mikan I feel like the more straightforward reason for her being so... happy is enjoying her despair as she has returned to the Ultimate Despair.

I may be stretching too far, but another thing I've noticed in Teruteru's execution is that it could be possibly refering to the "throwing a virgin in a volcano", as a stereotypical sacrifice used in shows. For Gundham’s execution, a hypothesis I had for his circle was that he was trying to communicate/apologize to Nekomaru in his last minute of life for killing him. And him being lifted to heaven was a result of that indicating that Gundham wanted to be a good person despite his evilish attitude. He doesn’t really look up with happiness or despair when he’s being carried up. He just has a blank look. That made me think that despite him wanting to be good, he genuinely thought that he was innately evil, so he didn’t know how to react when he saw he was allowed to go to heaven. It was just a thought I had when I first saw it.

Execution of Monomi in my opinion: One of the things that makes students afraid of Monokuma is its power and control over where they are, making students kill each other, and THIS form of intimidation is very different from that of Trigger Happy Havoc, in the first game Monokuma gives very vague information about what the Class Trial would be like so Sayaka just thought it was killing someone to be able to leave, that also together with Monokuma exploding after Mondo punched him. In the second game, however, he goes directly to use firearms to let the students know that Monokuma is powerful, using Monomi for that was, apart from the relationship between the two of Monokuma always attacking Monomi, a way for the students to realize that the only person willing to help the students was brutally killed, it was done with many effects and cuts to make the scene more frantic.

There's even some interesting irony in Monomi and Akane's "executions". Monomi hates violence, so her execution is from an actual weapon that could be used in warfare. Note Monokuma wildly moving his arm like a general ordering to fire. As for Akane, the entire scene is a reference to Piccolo saving Gohan from an energy blast in Dragon Ball Z. Monokuma suddenly taking out a bazooka to kill her seems like a wink to how characters in shonen battles suddenly unveil new powers that might feel overpowered or cheating.

a few things :3 - in mikan's execution, she derived pleasure from the arm pulsing (which as aforementioned, signifies the trauma/abuse she endured). i think this incapsulates her relationship with junko, as well as her behavior as a despair. - when chiaki races towards the exit, this is meant to give the player false hope, as makoto (who was an innocent party, like chiaki) had been miraculously saved from his execution in the first game, which also happened to take place in the 5th chapter.

I really like Mikans execution because it shows her personality so well. Hanging out with mikan is uncomfortable, with her intensely skittish, overly lewd, and just general moods wings of hers. The way she gets so haply at the slight est praise, just to have a meltdown at a small criticism. Her execution is uncomfortable, just like she is.

As someone who just recently finished DR 2, Mikan's execution could've been so much better. I was imagining some kind of surgery being botched with big needles and sharp objects and such stabbing into her. The issue wasn't necessarily the content of her actual execution, the run time suffered as well. It felt like her execution left a lot to be desired. Let's say the execution is mostly the same (big arm shooting into space with her riding it) and the camera flashes back to Mikan in bed drooling in ecstasy, and the camera pans toward the vital signs monitor as her heart beats fast until she flatlines and dies. Although it wouldn't fix her execution, it would certainly add to the idea she died because of the lethal injection.

The only thing I'd like to add is that Akane's Execution is a clear reference to Dragon Ball, specifically the scene when Nappa tries to kill Gohan with a blast and Piccolo sacrifices himself to save him, Monokuma being Nappa, Nekomaru being Piccolo and Akane being Gohan. Apart from that, I just want to say that your Danganronpa analysis are always extremely enjoyable and that you always show me new perspectives to enjoy Danganronpa from. In this case I didn't really like Danganronpa 2's executions, but you made me appreciate them a lot more. Excellent video and keep up the great work!

The reason why i think the circle is for Gundham’s hamsters is because of something he said to Sonia. “Sonia.. An act as unrefined as stopping a man from going to his death.. does not befit a noble such as yourself.” We also see him accepting and even telling Monokuma to begin his punishment. If he was truly ready to accept his death, why would he cast a spell to protect himself? We also know that the four dark devas of destruction are very important to him, as seen throughout the game. It would make sense that he would protect them in his final moments. I agree with you that it makes sense that he would cast the spell to save himself in order to further push his message, and it would be just like Monokuma to trick him into thinking that it would work, just to have him die anyway. I think it may be possible that he was casting the spell to protect himself and those he cared about, but it didn't work (on him, at least), though this is purely a guess, and I have no evidence to prove it. I'm probably going to return to this and make sure I have my points right when I have more brain cells lmao
