Nice Bimini top Stu. Great addition to any boat. I've found that they seem to last longer by spraying them with scotch guard or whatever fabric waterproofing spray you can get your hands on every now and then. The waterproofing spray also makes the water run right off them and bird poop don't soil them as easy.

Mixing a solution of 3 parts metho to 1 part silicone sealant then mixing it around so the silicon dissolves is great for water proofing. I do this to all my cycling kit. Lasts a year or so. Just mix it up, brush it on with a paint brush, let it dry and watch the water bead off it.

I put one on my boat 8-9 years ago. love it. keeps the sun off when you start to burn. I also added adhesive white led lights to the middle support poles with the wire zpi tied down to the boat and a quick disconnect. so its easily removed when I take the top off. its like having a ceiling light in your living room while fishing at night.

I have the same Bimini and the instructions show the solid bar going to the front in the diagram it indicates the tag (labelled “front”) is on the end of the solid bar. After watching this I realise they had the instructions wrong and it all works if I reverse the cover over. I was provided screw head screws along with thumb screw type screws so I just put the regular screw head (requiring screw driver) down the bottom which avoids the rubbing against a pole or pier issue. Thanks for the great video.

Gday mate biminis are great for small boats sometimes they can be a pain in the arse when fishing but when your out on a 40 degree day even just having that over you to block the sun makes a world of difference ,your lucky i had to do mine by myself trying not to scratch the paintwork .When i was trailering it i used a set of home made bungy cords and had it rest on the motor cowling with a towel underneath to stop scratching from the sock good video .

Dangar Marine I have a Yamaha 200hp on my boat and the motor runs on an external fuel tank, but I added 5 gallons to the boat tank witch had a few gallons of bad gas already in it, but when I go to siphon it the fuel line I put down in the boat tank I bought it out and the line on the end was dry so I'm not entering the fuel is there anything to do to enter the fuel?
@TimsWorkshopTJY
@TimsWorkshopTJY 7 жыл бұрын
If you want to get all the fuel out of the main tank I removed the ball hose and hooked up a small DC pump to that tube. Worked great and used that fuel in my old truck. If there is any water in the fuel you may want to take it to a hazard material site to get rid of it.

Co-sign the 'twist in the strap' technique. I found that myself after some trial/error. My front straps would buzz and sound like chainsaws at speed in the wind! Just a half-twist does the trick. Also, I found my boat is harder to stay on plane and porpoises more easily when my top is up. I guess it was acting like a sail. I loosened/tightened the straps here and there, angling the leading edge down a bit and that lessened the sail effect. Just a tip.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
It sure does help. Good point about adjusting the angle of the bimini until the boat rides nicely. I definitely tried to angle mine down as much as I could.

The strap without a twist suffers from aeroelastic separation or flutter. Same problem occurs with sharp leading edges on airfoil. A blunt leading edge flys smoother with no darting or flutter.

awsome addition to the green machine i know you will reap the cool benefits:) on my old cutter i also add a bimni i used the stock kit that came with the plastic connectors they lasted here in canada for a few summers before they cracked after hot sun and cold winters , i ordered the stainless ones then realized that they were way to much cash , i went with the aluminum ones , and added a slider track down a short length of my gunnel so that i could slide forward or back :) just my 2 cents , great video Stu even for a first bimini install very well said and interesting vid as always , the twist in the tension straps one great tip also cheers
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea about adding a slider track. If I have trouble with these plastic fittings I might also look into upgrading them to aluminium ones. I'm thinking if I leave the canopy up (which I have been so far) it will probably be the first thing to go from UV so I might end up replacing the whole thing every two or three years, time will tell I guess.

This is what I have coming soon, my boat has versitrack a channel that runs inside gunnels hoping to be able to just use 1/4” carriage bolts in track but if doesn’t work out I have aluminum angle iron I can bolt to versitrack, it might be very simple, same 4 bow with rear supports I may add front supports for extra rigidity I want to see the length of the first rear supports first as 4 supports will have to be the right lengths to adjust tightness of fabric
@ronpowell2373

Very similar design to mine. A few issues I have had from last season - I lost the travel sock/cover when towing the boat down the freeway. I would guess the air flow caused the zip to undo itself and so the cover stripped itself off. I now use a 4mm 'silver' rope to spiral wrap the bimini cover when transporting the boat. I haven't found a new cover yet. - Those nylocs in the bimini frame are easy to lose if you undo the hand screw - which I do for my lady to get on the boat. As per Murphies law, the nuts drop into the sand on the launch beach and disappear forever ( same place pens go to?) .A touch of glue saves them - I have found Silastic to be good as it has enough 'give' but holds the nuts in. But I still carry spares in the tool kit now. - Swapping of the brackets so the hand screw does not protrude over the side ( I did the same thing but for a different reason, losing a handle is hard to replace, a lost nut is far easier to source) , you will find it easier to drill the rivet out that retains the bracket and swap the brackets to the other side. a bit more of a fiddle but it works. - A spray of lanolin into the springs is also a good idea, they are plain steel springs, not stainless. Also the tubing on mine is aluminised thin wall steel, check yours with a magnet. It means you have to wipe the tubes down with a water dispersant now and then to keep corrosion at bay. Mine have started to corrode at the cut ends- a dip in some POR15 seems to have fixed that issue.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
Good tip about glueing the nylocs into the brackets, I can see them falling out quite easily otherwise. A bit of pre-emptive maintenance to fight off the corrosion is also a good point. I think these poles are aluminium but I'll check them today.

Hey guys, I put one on my boat this spring and got to use it all summer. I'd seen them on many other boats and always wanted one. It was a great decision to add it to the boat. I did do something drastically different though. I put it on backwards so that it stows above my windsheild. I'd never seen anyone do that so I was a little nervouse but it works great. I bought the tallest one available so I'd have a little more head room for the fishing poles plus if I step up to the bow there is extra head space. Give it a try next time or if you don't mind a couple more holes in the boat you could spin the one you have around, Take care

Hi Matthew. I've been thinking about that for a while, but I can't do it on the port side and I can just imagine the look my wife would give me as we head across the river and I am the only one dry and warm! This is actually the only reason I haven't done it already...

I have one of these on my boat but the top is getting a little worn out now. As I never take it down, I've been considering trying to convert the frame to a hardtop using some of that lightweight aluminium sandwich board (I don't know what it's actually called). This would also allow the installation of an extra windscreen between the leading edge and the exsisting screen which will make for a much more comfortable ride at speed. Have you ever done anything like that?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't done it myself but you do see plenty of boats with thin aluminium riveted onto a frame like this. It also allows things like mounting an anchor light on top which is a good way to go.

You don't find the bimini is way too flimsy, right where it is mounted? I just installed mine, and there is so much movement I'm afraid to drive with it up, thinking it's going to break on the water. I'm thinking of upgrading to stainless mounts.

Stew love your channel and all your videos. Hopefully you may have a answer for me. Upon my grandfather's passing in 2015 I inherited his Fisher man cave included was a 1910 Evenrude outboard that he had purchased in 1911, cosmetically it is beautiful, it turns over freely I been able to source most of the parts to get her to run again as a tribute to him but rings seem to be a problem. Any ideas would be appreciated
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. By rings are a problem are you referring to ordering them? Sounds like a great project. Getting original parts is obviously going to be tricky an outboard of that vintage but you may be able to get rings from an engineering shop that suit. Otherwise someone like Will from the Will's Garage KZbin channel may know as he is involved with several vintage outboard groups.

Thanks Chris. They generally just call them "clears." A flybridge is the second deck you see on bigger boats for steering from up high.

I don't have this boat any more but you just unclip the two straps going down to the gunwhales and then it colapses together. Wrap some straps around it to stop it opening again.

cool mate.... hey mate as i was driving my boat today has a 90hp Yamaha 2stroke full throttle cruising along & it slows down & shut of but i pump up the fuel line then it's all right again wat u think abt it
@michaelduong3852
@michaelduong3852 7 жыл бұрын
are the fuel line from the petrol tank to the engine old? cause for me, my one literally was blocked up since it was so old. Fuel was going through, but when rubbish gets into the line itself, it clogs up and then my engine shuts off. my engine also shuts off when i put it in full throttle as there was not enough fuel going through and the hose gets tighten the the engine tried to suck fuel through. not sure why my hose started to constrict on itself in the first place (my guess is that the weather cause it to warp), but that's what happened to mine. I tested mine by disconnecting the hose from the engine and the fuel tank and removing the tips from both ends then blew through it. was extremely hard so i got that changed and now my engine is running great again... though not sure if thats the same issue with yours.

Have a look at Stu's older videos, he cuts an old fuel line up and shows how they break down inside and cause blockages, what to look for etc. Also - is your fuel bowls full when it happens? If not you start down the fuel pump check list/videos . But the easiest one - is the fuel tank vent open?
@DangarMarine

Yep, I'd definitely check fuel lines and vent.

Hi dangerstu I've been loving your videos and have been binge watching them! I have a question I have a 1974 Chrysler 45hp and was wondering what the right fuel oil mix I should use and weather or not running a little more oil would be an idea as it is an older engine?? Cheers
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you've been enjoying the vids. I'm not sure what it is designed to run on. You can usually find PDF copies of the owners manuals online that will tell you. It is usually around 50:1, but running a bit of extra oil isn't bad unless you do a lot of idling / trolling in which case the plugs will probably foul up.

Hi Stu My dad Leslie recently sold his house on Dangar Island and we recovered his 30hp Quintrex from the Island and BMC at Brooklyn, bought a trailer and Leong helped us get it back to Scone. In the process of fitting the Bimini 3 bow and hoping to install ours the other way around back to front as I can more easily fold it completely down on the backrest of the rear facing front seat at the bow. Cross my fingers lol

greeetings from North Carolina in the US, had a Honda bf25 with a spark plug that had hot fire out of the head, screw it in and it had a dead skip. it had fuel and compression ( a new plug cured the issue ) can you explain what the hell was happening?

I unscrewed the bottom plug after i determined that is where the miss was, I put the plug against a head bolt to check if it was firing, it was, when i screwed it back in the head it stopped firing ( still missing). think it was damaged and grounding its self out, was curious if you has seen this before.

Dangar Marine I have a 2003 Yamaha 115 4 stroke, can I replace my lower unit with a 2012 Yamaha 150 4 stroke lower unit? If not, could you recommend a year that is interchangeable with my 2003 Yamaha

Not sure which ones are interchangeable, but in that situation I would go onto a site that sells parts online and compare the part numbers of the gear cases. If they are the same you should be good to go.

Not a fan of screws either. I can see those stainless steel screws working themselves out of the alloy hull. My rule of thumb is always bolts and nuts so long as you can reach both sides of the bolt.

I also find screws hard to get undone once they are corroded a bit, presuming they haven't already fallen out!

A bit late to the party. Would it be worth considering the angle the boat sits at when on plane, so that the Bimini is then horizontal and offering the least air resistance? Otherwise, you may be installing a huge air brake to reduce forward speed.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 3 жыл бұрын
Generally a boat will point up getting on the plane and then sit pretty flat again once at full speed.
