We used to describe it this way: It should feel like a little bit of "sucking". Good to have some oil resting on the metal. Additionally it won't hurt to try the next bigger and next smaller size of gauges if you are not sure. If one of these fits, too, you have to check again. Especially with the exhaust valves where temperature is critically.

Ah brings back a story to share. I had a 65 VW that fire burned up the side of one of the plugs and ruined the head. I also had a 68 VW bus that the crank broke. I took both heads off and put them on the bug. Went to start it and the rockers all were too tight and stopped turning the key since there was no compression with all the valves open. no damage so gave up and went back in the house to think. Then got an idea💡. I went back out and got a hand full of washers and raise all the rocker assemblies up and set all the gaps per spec. It worked and there was allot of🍺 to celebrate. my brother bought it and ran great for years before he sold it still with my washers on it. Moral of the story once a hack always a hack. haha

@ronpowell2373
@ronpowell2373 7 жыл бұрын
50:1 is easy, in litres. What ever you put in the tank, in litres, double it, add a zero and put that many millilitres of oil in the fuel. So 25L of petrol x 2 = 50 = 500mL of oil. For 25:1 you multiply x 4 25L of petrol x 4= 100 = 1000Ml of oil ( 1l) For 32:1 you multiply by 3 25L x 3 =75 = 750mL of oil.
@ronpowell2373

Thank you so very much. I adjusted my valves on my Honda 50 and I found... wow way too tight! I adjusted to what I thought was correct. Engine then ran awful and sounded "clacky" horrible idle and was cutting out at planing speed. Problem: I adjusted the mm clearance to inches! Way too loose. Be careful out there, read the manual and Pay Attention! .. or maybe I'm the only dumbass alive. Thanks for great vid. Oh well time for another beer.

If timing marks are not available securing a micrometer through the spark plug opening and watching to see when the deflection of the needle stops moving and then starts to move the other way is a good way to determine TDC.
@ronpowell2373
@ronpowell2373 7 жыл бұрын
With 4 strokes as long as the piston is TDC (shine a torch through the spark plug hole, watch the piston. when it stops moving up or down, its close enough, 5 degrees either side makes no difference) the rockers will be on the back of the cam and the gaps can be set.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's good to have some of these techniques up your sleeve as plenty of motors don't have good timing marks unfortunately.

I wonder if there is a difference between the 30HP and this being a 40HP. If the flywheel has notches for a rope to emergency start the motor you can use those to show you which way your motor rotates.

Good vid, I would definately suggest a small amount of black silicone in the 4 corners of your valve cover gasket or there's a very good chance it'll leak
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 6 жыл бұрын
So far no leaks, but yes, they do call for RTV on many curved sections of valve cover gaskets, you are right. Normally it is more on sections that curve up away from the plane of the main gasket to go around the cam ends though.

Great vid Stu! What are you're thoughts on hydrofoils? Some people say its a scam and others swear by them. I don't have a problem planing with my 50 merc even with a heavy load, but would be interested if it really makes a difference. Maybe when you do the video you could time you're planing speed with and without hydrofoil. That would be another vid that im sure a lot of people would like to see real facts and not just people saying "It feels like it planes better". Keep up the good work bud!!!
@DangarMarine

I think it depends a lot on whether there is a problem to solve with either the hull shape or the height the engine is mounted. I don't really have much before and after experience with them so I'll be interested in doing a good comparison myself.

Hi Stu, I appreciate your videos, thanks! I'm trying to fix an issue that I caused on my Yamaha F40 outboard (4-stroke). It's already cost me $800 to the Yamaha dealer who thought that cleaned the carbs was the problem but I was sure it wasn't. Retuned the engine no better off. What happened was, in a momentary lapse of reason, or due to lack of experience, I cranked the engine with the timing belt off. I know .. I found out later this is a big no-no. Do you know what problems does could have caused? After doing this the engine starts and runs okay, but has about 80 per-cent of power at full throttle and sounds quite ragged and noisy. From what I understand I might have bent a valve or something. Any help or suggestions you can give me would be appreciated.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine Жыл бұрын
Hi Russell, yes, bent valves is common as some of the valves will be open and therefore hit this piston. I would take the head off and check all the valves. The easiest thing is probably give it to a machine shop and get them to resuface it and grind the valve seats at the same time. It will be better than it was before the accident if you get that done.

Hi Stu, suggestion for you. One is how to transport a old 2 stroke kicker motor in a car and be able to start it with a dry carburetor? Seems to be an issue with my son's merc even after pumping up the fuel ball but finally starts after many pulls. The choke works fine once the carb has fuel in it.
@DangarMarine

That sounds a bit strange. Once you prime it up with the bulb the carb bowl should be full and ready to go. Is the needle and seat sticking maybe?

Hi, have you maybe some suggestion on how to detect the TDC for each cylinder on Yamaha Fxx engines?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 5 жыл бұрын
It is generally the same for all four stroke engines so you'll be able to find some good vids on it, but the basic idea is to make sure the piston is pushing air out the spark plug hole so you know it is on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke and then put a straw or something in the spark plug hole so you can see when the piston is at the top of it's travel.

Great vid stu. Do you have any experience with the BF150 valve clearances? We have 3 of them, and it's the only job I send the shops way...Cheers

Hi Matt. Not directly, we only deal with small commuter boats here so nothing over about 60HP, but I can't see why it would be significantly different.

Do you have to drain the oil - I didn't see you do that - is the oil lower in the engine thanx mate !!
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 6 жыл бұрын
No, all the oil will drain from the rocker cover down into the sump soon after the motor is switched off.

I think my Yamaha fourstroke 115 also need to check about those valve clearance because it had been 1400 hours now. By the manual said to be adjust every 1000 hours as I remember. But it was a DOHC beside of SOHC shown in this video. I am not mechanic but just learn so much in your video, is that any tips about fine tuning the DOHC engine valve clearance? Or just need to look clear about those intake and exhaust direction and then good to follow your instructions? Thanks!
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, yes, you just need to determine the exhaust and intake sides and follow the same procedure.

Great video Stu! When checking the clearances, do you use a feeler gauge that corresponds to the upper or lower limit of the spec range, or do you split the difference?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 5 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. I would generally go as close to the middle of the range as I could

thanks for the video, I have a question about some silicone that may or may not be missing around the bottom of the oil pan and the gear case. Should it be completely around? It seems like there is none around the front portion, my engine has 607 hours and is used in salt water only.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would expect the oil pan to be sealed completely unless one section presses against a rubber gasket or something.

Thanks, I actually pulled off the other side of plastic and it is not sealed there either, so I think I'm okay. I like your videos and will look forward to seeing more Honda 4-stroke videos

Hi Stu. Do the new Mercury efi 4 strokes need their valves adjusted?
@DangarMarine

Not sure. The really new motors may have hydraulic lifters like cars have an not need adjusting. The service schedule should say.

I have no problem with Honda (car) spark plugs....crank pulley bolts on the other hand! I don't know where they expect you to find a 1200lb/ft impact gun to get them off.

Wow, that's a huge amount of torque. Maybe one of those huge towable compressors for jackhammers you see on the side of the road would work!

we have some bolts that are done up to similar torques. The torque multiplier for the torque wrench is stupidly complicated but luckily we only use it 78 times every 7 years.

Well I exaggerate slightly, it's supposed to be about 400 to undo but they usually are stuck on especially if they've never been undone since factory and require much more. An 6ft beaker bar is common plus drill a hole in the belhousing to lock the flywheel and pray. There are special tools, they usually still don't work, it's a Honda thing I guess, bolts are recommended one use only on some.

Oil in cylinders is generally a blown head gasket is 4 stroke or a cylinder not firing if 2 stroke.

Hey mate thank you so much for all the knowledge you sharing I would like to ask you a question. Can i use the carbs from a 150hp two stroke jonhson on a 115 hp same year. Would that cause a problem on the smaller engine??
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they are the same, but if they are the same part number you will probably find you need to put smaller jets in to keep the air / fuel ratio correct.
@HarleyRog
@HarleyRog 6 жыл бұрын
For newer readers like myself, it's worth noting that if the carb intake diameter is too big the air velocity could be too slow and not suck out enough petrol, too small and you can't run at full speed as the engine will be throttled

Hey Stu thanks for another great video guide. I've got a BF135 2006 with 400 hours here and just wondering does it need valve clearance adjustment yet? Honda states it should be done every 200 hours but I've heard it can be done every 600 to even 1000 hours? Cheers

I wouldn't stress too much unless you can hear a lot of valve train noise (a sort of clattery sound)
