When I was out hiking on the weekend, I accidentally left my pack pocket open while I was on the trail. The pocket contained my house keys.
I hiked down the mountainside for 40 minutes with the pocket open. I passed people on my decent. When I got to my Jeep, I panicked when I saw my pack pocket open! I though, oh my gosh my keys.
Luckily my keys were there in the pack.
It got me to thinking that I've noticed a trend on the trail near the city where people don't want to talk to others on the trail. I'm not sure why this is, but we need to try and reverse that trend. Say hello and watch out for others. Someday we may need each other. AND it's just polite😁

Losing my keys is one of my fears, too. Most packs have a little sewn in string with a hook/clip. I try to remember to clip my keys onto that so it doesn't fall out if I'm on trail. People in general are super rude and self-centered. There's also a lot of anger. You don't have to be overly friendly, but being kind is a lost art. Safe hiking. ✌️
@agesadventures
@agesadventures Ай бұрын
This pack I have doesn't have that hook. I need a better pack eventually so I'll make sure that one has one of these or a way to add something like this. There has been a lot of anger the last few years. Maybe things will calm down. I try to be friendly on the trails because I'm out there to get away from the city rudeness😁

I always put my wallet & car keys in a zippered pocket on my pants. Years ago when things were low tech and car keys didn't have the FOB,etc on them and they were just simple flat keys I use to have a spare one duct taped to the inside of my rear license plate plus I always have a spare house key hidden somewhere on my back porch. I agree if someone sees your pack open they should speak up and let you know.Have a great day my friend!

I usually have my house keys in my pack and my Jeep key in a zippered jacket pocket. I didn't have the jacket on so the Jeep key was in my pack in a separate pocket. I don't like to leave the house keys in the Jeep in case something happens to it. This is the first time I've done something silly like this, so I'll just be more paranoid now and double check things😁 I've noticed the parks close to the city, the people are less friendly and outgoing. There are some, but it's getting less and less which is unfortunate! Out in the old logging roads, people are certainly more chatty. Sometimes overly so, lol 😂 I grew up in a small town and we always greeted people. It was just polite to do so. I hope you're having a good day too, Jim😀

Pretty day Age! Whew, I’m glad you didn’t lose your keys! I always put mine in a zippered pocket, same place every time… and that’s all that ever goes in there.👌 Cute bumble bee - I think those blue flowers are Common Camas, they’re a bit taller than what we have, maybe a different variety… I call them Blue Camas…. Pretty! If you see see similar white ones, also blooming now, they’re poisonous. 👌 Have a great week! 😄🌻🌻🌻

You were lucky. My house keys and car keys are on the same ring. I've lost things before on a 10 mile hike but luckily nothing important. I think you are right, we have lost that interaction. I always say hello to everyone on the hike. My thought process is that they may be having a bad day and my smile and hello could make all the difference. The runners never say hi but I've had some great conversations about hiking routes with people I may never see again. In a few instances the Trail bonds you. Sadly the lack of communication may be like you say, from the city. People don't want to make eye contact as some misconstrue this as aggressive or challenging. So they just walk passed, head down, not talking. One thing that does surprise me is how many people hike and listen to music. Each to their own but I love the music of the birds and the forest. On one hike I heard the unmistakable sound of a Lancaster Bomber. It was amazing. The next hiker I saw I wanted to get his perspective and how he felt about the iconic plane. He never saw it, was listening to his music full blast on his headphones. I thought, what a missed opportunity. I wonder if they are using the beat of the music to keep their pace up. Great advice Age and thanks for sharing.

I keep my keys separate. I've got a lot of keys for different things and if I'm going out without the vehicle, I leave those keys at home. One less thing to lose😀 Yes, I say hello all the time and when I don't get a response it feels rude to me. They can just say hi and keep on walking by, but at least acknowledge the human that gave you a greeting. The music is a bad one, especially here! You need to be listening for predators. It would be silly to get eaten by a bear because you were wanting to listen to the latest beats🐻

Yeah, Bumblebees seem friendly in some way. I hope the person that owned those keys was able to figure it out and go back and find them! I posted the knife I found on Facebook. So far no bites. My keys are always placed in a secure place in a fastened pocket within a bigger pocket of my rucksack. I often get distracted and leave something unzipped. An interesting one, because I reckon one of the parts of hiking is giving a lot of attention to details, yet nobody seems to either have dared to say a word, or well, actually noticed your pack was open. As regards people not meddling in, that's how it goes in the big cities, and I can understand this. I was quite curious about this phenomenon and other stuff related to anthropology, psychology and whatnot. There basically will be 2 sorts of politeness: positive and negative politeness. Not minding anyone else's business is the negative one. I'd rather suggest you look them up online if you're curious, but essentially, the positive politeness is when you do small talk with strangers and in general will engage with them by some means on a regular basis, whereas negative politenes presumes you shouldn't bother anyone out of respect to their boundaries, personal space and the way they go about their business. This is most common in the Nordic cities, but I somehow got brought up this way too, both by my family approach and Moscow life, so I can relate. Perhaps the bypassers thought of your pack as a too personal belonging to leave a notice on. With my experience I do agree this approach becomes a nuisance for all parties involved when taken to an extreme. Or maybe the folks were being plain inattentive?
@agesadventures
@agesadventures Ай бұрын
I think the negative politeness happens in the cities. People want to keep to themselves and not be bothered nor do they want to bother others. On the hiking trail, it should be expected you may run into others and this is the time to be friendly. I grew up in a small town and we were always polite and said hello to people on the street in town. I'll keep trying my positive reinforcement on the trail and maybe someone else will change their habits and be more friendly thus causing others to be friendly. One can hope! Yes, the people I passed could have been inattentive too.
