when i first started in the arts,my coach at the time explained it to me like this-"its not that youre not progressing,you are,now think of a tornado,youre at the bottom thinking youre just going round and round in circles not going anywhere,in reality you are going round and round, but at the same time youre slowly but surely elevating,not just in knowledge but also ability".- thats stuck with me for 10+ years..

I've been having the same issue as Chris. I'm a 4 stripe blue belt, and have been a blue belt for 2 yrs. My instructor asked me the other day how long have I been training, and I told him that I just passed my 3rd year mark this last April. He then tells me that this will be my last year as a blue, and that within the next 6 months to a year, I'll be going into purple belt. I kinda panicked. I still struggle with fundamentals like staying to loose when I should be tighter, or freezing during a moment of position or submission because I'm unsure of escape or angle to take. My expectations as a higher blue belt is that I shouldn't struggle with some of these things. My coach just tells me to up my game and train more, but even though I spend 3 to 4 days a week training, I still struggle with basic concepts, even with some of the upcoming white belts. It's discouraging sometimes that I feel I may be promoted to purple when fumbling with basic technique. I know I'm not where I should be, but do you feel that if I'm promoted, I'll grow into my rank at some point?

Jonathan Paper great question !!!

I'm confused about your instructor basing your promotions solely on time. Don't you have to do a sparring test and demonstrate the appropriate skill level to get your next belt?
@grahamthebaud8257 жыл бұрын
My instructor does that too, but the higher the belt the longer the time is as far as I know. I'm only a 2 stripe white belt so I could be a bit off but it is mainly time based

Ross Plavsic everyone I've talked with, there's no real curriculum passed blue belt.

I don't claim to know the thoughts of instructor, but... He could have just decided to promote you in the next year and kept it to himself. It sounds like maybe he told you hoping that you would take the inventory you are currently taking and apply it to your training. Has this helped you to focus you on what is most important in your training? Think about what you accomplished with each full year you spent training jiu jitsu; you can get a whole lot done in that timeframe. I am guessing that if your coach thought you were ready to be a purple belt right now, you would be a purple belt right now. You shouldn't expect yourself to feel ready right now. I think there is a good chance that if you try hard to improve the areas in which you are struggling (and I bet you will) you will be a real purple belt by the time the rank is given to you.

"like i should" i always feel like if you don't think you're progressing the way you're meant to just take it more into your hands. (which dude obvs took a step toward by asking) just drill more, look up more people doing the same technique, different sized people. take into consideration all adjustable variables and start tryin new things. replace some of the tv you watch with bjj comps on youtube n shit. good talk about expectations, but i think expectations are also dependent on how you use em. whether it makes you rigid , or for productivity like self reflection blah blah. stay objective and they can be beneficial. dope video chewy, solid content as always

I'm a 2 stripe blue belt, and last month I felt like I was making leaps and bounds, but for the last 2 and half weeks I've been getting pummelled. It's really not a good feeling and it's chipping away at my self esteem.. I have a comp in about a week and I'm feeling doubtful now..

Chris, To expand a bit more on what Chewy said and something that may help you during the blues, look at the little 'victories' during a roll. Discover what little adjustment you need to get that sub or block from being subbed. What did you do when you were rolling with that higher belt that stopped him from getting that sub? Take down some notes even if it not about the techniques but of the thoughts right after rolling. As a BBQ told me once, you can always roll against a white belt and see your progress. Good luck brother!

Thanks Chewy.... great video as always & very timely. I've been moping around all afternoon feeling that bjj is just not for me. I am sure progress is just around the corner. Long-time 4th stripe white belt.

I've been a blue belt for three years and I've to deal with a number of various injuries so my progress has been definitely slowed. I've managed to push through and take what I can from every experience on the mat and I celebrate the small victories while trying to stay upbeat. Plus being an older grappler ( I'm still in great shape ya youngins' lol) I have to measure my expectations. I find it's important to get really good at fundamentals and the rest of my game will improve. @Chewjitsu thoughts?

Hey Chewy, I just got a membership at a jiu jitsu gym and I'm doing good. But.... When it comes to sparring I find excuses not to do it. And I do pretty good, even when I was boxing I didn't suck but anxiety over takes me leading up to it and I pussy out. What's up? Love you're stuff, thanks

Hey, I rly love your vids and you as a person especially. Have a quick question please. I am really drawn to ground, grappling. I've been tryining MMA for few years, really enjoying ONLY the grappling part. I am starting to mix up some box in my training. I AM starting to train BJJ now, swapping for everything else, have to see how that will work out tho. MY QUESTION: Is training BJJ ENOUGH for selfdefence? DEEPER MEANING: I heard, when talking about UFC, that a black belt after one solid hit is brown belt, after another he is purble... You know, basicaly when pure BJJ dude gets hit his chances collapse almost. I want to be able to defend myself and I really feel like boxing and MMA combined can do the trick, but I AM DRAWN to grappling and want to practise BJJ, because I actually ENJOY the ground (still without punches). I know I would not face very skilled boxers or fighters on the street, but still, my main priority is to defend myself. I have been training for that purpose for few years, while not enjoying it so much. So, go with enjoying BJJ, training for my reason - selfdefence, or some kind of mix up? Please, answer thoroughly, I seriously want and need to know your opinion (+ I enjoy your voice :-D ) Thank you. Your fan David

I have a question guys,I was thinking about getting into bjj to improve my ground game after training muay thai,but thing that kinda annoying me is that I don't really like wearing shorts or compressing pants,and I heard you need to wear a compression pant under your gi pant,also what kind da shirt you wear under your gift?

It is so lame to train martial arts thinking about belts and stripes, you do it for the physical exercise and self defense knowledge, not because of belts...

jackguck think it's like if you're on a date and have an expectation to get to second base (is that still relevant nowadays?) But instead you just get to walk the girl home, your expectations haven't been met, so you feel like a failure. But because everyone develops at a different rate, you shouldn't go into it with an expectation of being at a certain point at a certain time. Progression will come when you're ready, not when you think you're ready...... I think lol
