This was an R-290 cooler that was not working , as usual using a big picture mindset I found more than just the obvious. Despite all the worry they are really not a big deal at all to work on, just a basic refrigerator.

These R290 units are not nearly as dangerous as everyone thinks. I and a friend tried blowing up one of these compressors by filling it with acetylene and oxygen some years ago. That's way more powerful than a bit of leftover propane, so don't try this at home. It made a muffled (still pretty loud) bang, but without visible damage to the compressor. Unfortunately. The biggest danger comes from venting the R290 out of the system. It is heavier than air and can accumulate in drains and their pipes. If it ignites somehow in there, everyone sitting on the can is in for a very nasty surprise.

You clearly don't know a thing about stochiometric ratios as evidenced by your experiment. These units hold so little propane that venting is a none issue. Filling pipes... lol right.

I used to hold doors open for people. But about a year ago I done as I always did which was hold the door open for the person behind me. The person is this case had children and her arms was full. So, I thought if anyone needed a little help it would be the person with their arms full and two little one to watch. But instead she rolled her eyes and went out of her way to walk to another door. As she walked away, one of the kids said something about me holding the door open and then the mother said, "He only did it because he's a misogynist". I have always been somewhat jaded. But that experience changed me. If someone asks for assistance I will gladly help. But I no longer offer it. I have become a person that keeps to myself. I try to not affect anyone in anyway in public.

I follow you 100% with you practice of leaving service-ports on your R290 Systems. I would suggest getting some red or yellow heatshrink (the right size) and putting that on after you're done and ready to leave. That will make it easy to identify. As you said, it’s a reminder that on a system with that small of a charge you are supposed to think before adding gauges. But at the same time it's not just tape you can just rip off without thinking (that maybe falls off over time), but something you need to consciously cut away. Just a thought of me here. Keep up the great work!

The gas leak tester reminded me of something. Anti-freeze fumes will set off propane/combustible gas leak detectors; so if there's any chance anti-freeze was in the unit, that could also contribute to a leak find. Granted you'd also see the dried up anti-freeze. And I'm not saying you shouldn't still take a detected leak seriously, it's just something to note.

Take the ball valve handles off the core tools, put a drop of nylog on the ball valve shaft, and put the handles back on. Any leaks there will pull in nylog in to the ball valves and help seal them up. Same with any other orings or seals on core tools.

In a previous life I serviced home audio equipment {other guys fixed VCR's and phone equipment} and we hated roach infested stuff. Not only did it stink but the remains gummed up the works and the excrement corroded circuit boards and metal. Generally they got returned unrepaired. When he said "buy someone's coffee" reminded me of a story, some years ago, when someone did exactly that at a Starbucks. For the next 3+ hours everyone did the same thing. If I remember correctly some 67 people did that. Think how everyone involved felt about that. It made my day just hearing about it ! ! ! A smile or wave ( make sure to use all of your fingers ) doesn't cost you a thing, and it might make someone's day just a little bit better.

Great Job Chris. These new R 290 units are soon to be the thing. Now they are pushing R 32 A for central units, and i think all central units will be R 32 A in 2023. I think it's all bs. They say there is a R 410 A shortage, and it has a much higher global warming potential than R 22. R 32 Is midly flammable. I have my F gas certification so i should be able to use these new refrigerants. Also by looking at this unit you serviced, it looks to be turnkey refrigeration system meaning you can remove the top of the unit, unbolt evaporator and condensing unit unwire condensing unit, and remove refrigeration unit as a whole, and install brand new one. I have did service like this where company sent me whole assembled unit charged and ready to install and wire up. Also the beauty of R 290 is you don't need a whole lot of charge in the system, same goes for the new R 32 A. All window units now have R 32 A and i have noticed they have a smaller charge than the R 410 A window units. Again great video.

Chris, some time ago, I got a used beverage cooler that was R290. I had to replace the casters on it as 3 out of 5 were bad (me thinks this is the reason they wanted to get rid of it). It belonged to a national beverage brand, and the convenience store manager contacted the owner, and gave me permission to take the cooler. I'm thinking that since this is a commercial unit, I may contact a local trade school to see if they want it for training purposes. It's at my shop, but I don't have electric there. I have to run a generator for power. I plan to install solar panels on an adjacent roof as it's a flat roof where I can mount the panels on a sloped frame. FYI, this is a round portable unit about 24" across.

Nice video. I hate to mess it up, but I’ll be the 291st comment, I thought the 290 comments was ironic. One little trick I somehow went like 12 years without figuring out, not sure if you already do this one but it might help someone. When you have a piece of copper that isn’t round and can’t get into a fitting or whatever, a lot of times you can take your adjustable wrench and adjust down to a good round piece of the same size copper and then go to your oblong piece and spin the wrench around and it will round it out. Someone just showed me that like a year ago and I couldn’t believe I’ve went all this time not doing it.

Great video, quick question, One of the guys I work with, did a warranty call on a R-290 not even a month old, already had service access ports on the process tubes from the factory, the warranty guy on the phone just told us to seal um when we come back with parts. He had no comment on how they did not have sealed process tubes on a new unit from factory. Ever encounter that in the field?

Could you use a shrink wrap tube over the port in stead of tap. You could use a heat gun no flame to shrink it. Gives a very good reminder that it’s not a normal gas. Thanks for sharing good as always

It would have been easier to un-sweat and braze the cap tube with the evaporator unbolted from the wall. You would not have to worry about burning anything.

as for venting those inside, you can buy a couple fittings to go from 1/4” flare to iron pipe to hose threads to vent it into a garden hose that you run outside. Then purge it out with nitrogen after. Kind of a pain but better than losing your eyebrows and scaring all the cooks with a giant fireball, if you have to work in a running kitchen.

I think the flammable systems require connections like Wago. I believe that using wire nuts is unsafe due to it being a potential spark ⚡️wire connector spade connectors and crimp connectors are not allowed on a R290 systems.

Long time viewer, first time commenting. Question, why are you pulling vacuum from the low side? I always pull from the high side, especially with a cap tube. Your essentially limiting your vacuum flow by having to pull through the cap tube, since the valves in the comp prevent flow from high to low. If you pull on the high side you get more flow as gas can move through the cap tube as well as the compressor. Also if there is moisture in the system/drier its gonna evac much faster then sending it through the cap tube.

When you replace discharge band you can plastic tape or sleeve on discharge band because this pipe continue contact with water & after some time chance of pipe leakge few years ago every company use IRON pipe for discharge in drain box after some time pipe leaking cause of corrosion

I would suggest you invest in a cheap welding blanket ($20 on Amazon). Usually stray scorch marks would not be an issue, but I have seen you torching near wires and plastic a few times (in this one the inside of the crappy fridge box got toasted black). A strategic welding blanket would give you a lot of adjacent parts safety, and one less thing to have to worry about.

so, i grew up in a roach infested house, i've never had roaches kill any of my electronics, they get very dirty yes, but never in over 20 years have i actually seen anything die as a result. i have however had electronics get damaged by the fog that is used to get rid of them. with that in mind, i would've honestly argued the controller to still be under warranty as it could've have died as a result of something other than pests. but they probably wouldn't have agreed

Great job ! I see how much things have changed! When I was working no electronic gauges no one used a micron gauge or purged with nitrogen and I can still remember my instructor at theRSES school shaming us if we had a solder drip on the bottom of the joint calling it a dognut and how we needed to clean up our act and do a professional job! That unit was really abused for being one year old Chris! Propane is not as bad. as having to work with ammonia! When I first started working I released the gas out of a old sulfur dioxide unit and ended up calling hazmat! I thought it was R-12! Was I ever wrong! You are so right about safety and comming home at the end of the day! One of our competitors techs made the mistake of thinking the oxygen bottle was r-22 because both bottles are green and he never came home, at the end of the day! There was a big explosion almost leveling the house like a bomb! Our instructor had warned us about that! Liked seeing you work on that small unit! I would bring stuff like that back to the shop to repair!

I have never bought the very expensive Tru Blue kit for core removal and vacuum , but I suspect they fail (leak) after a short time also. For the roughly 400 dollar price tag they better last at least 5 years, and I bet they don't last a year. Any comments on that?

The fact that its still under warranty (for the leaks at least) suggests that its not that old. And since its under warranty you do what the manufacturer tells you to do for a warranty repair (which in this case is to replace the items in question).
@PantherSerpahin
@PantherSerpahin 2 жыл бұрын
Also with it being under warranty they will probably be only required to pay for the controller and maybe some of the labour as that was an out of warranty repair. The rest is covered by the manufacturer.
