I am a 42A. I made E5 in 2 years and 11 months coming in as a fuzzy and never getting a waiver to promote. I love being in the Army, I love the spirit, I love putting on the uniform, I love serving and working hard with my brothers, and I love training for combat. Except I do none of this. Sometimes, it doesn't even feel like I am in the Army. Sometimes it feels like I am just an officer worker that puts on a green uniform. I work in a BN S1 in a sustainment brigade. Almost 90% of our soldiers are overweight, don't care, and are on profile. Most of those are leaders. I want something more, I want to serve with brothers and sisters who want to be here, who want to better themselves. I dropped a 160th packet and it was the best week of my life. The week before you go to class is preparation, and I loved finally feeling like I was a part of something important. Only to find out that I wasn't going to make it to class, after passing everything, they didn't tell me or 20 others why we didn't make it. I could only guess it was psych or because I have been to BH on deployments simply because you don't have to schedule an appointment. I did the walk of shame back to my S1. We don't do PT, we come in at 0630 and work at our desks until 1700. I work out during lunch and run after work but it's not enough. I just scored a 498 on my ACFT, my lowest ever. I eat healthy and stay fit, but it is just not enough. Sometimes I feel like I am at a disadvantage, like my body is just not as elite as others (I tore two ACLs in highschool playing soccer). I decided I am going to go to RASP. I want to be a ranger, and I feel like they could use some 42A right? I desperately need help, I want to know what to do, what to eat, all of this. Some guys I have met in the Army just eat whatever and do whatever and they are still fit. I have to eat right, sleep right, hydrate, stretch just to stay with them. Do you have any suggestions for me? Any insight? I want this.

You have a good balance of army shit and personal growth content that a lot of people can get behind, whether they are high school kids or dudes who have been out a while now. I think it’s great you mention the day to day monotony that even batt guys have to deal with. A lot of guys really skip through all the minutia and focus on the cool shit and I believe it sets potential kids up for failure. You gotta “pay the man” to get what you want, after all. Thanks for the content bro.

Definitely do your best to crush OSUT, not sure exactly when the Regiment recruiters come by, but make sure to attend that brief. Sometimes they've only got a couple slots; if your PT score is low and/or if the Drill Sergeants don't like you it will be difficult to get a slot.

I think it's important to note as well when physically training for something that you need to know when to stop, or barring that how long it takes you to get back to 100% repair. I'm currently in AIT and attending RASP PT which is a company PT substitute run by RASP cadre for people who want to go RASP, and It's crazy to see the mental side of RASP come into play. It's hard to comprehend the jacked Ranger who runs a 28 minute 5 mile saying "hey, its all mental", but it's another thing to see RASP cadre that aren't big, super jacked, etc. It really helps put it into perspective. Also, its crazy to hear that someone had the same desire to go to RASP as me. It's hard to explain to people why I want to experience conflict without it turning into a "So you want to kill people?" conversation.

I never had the opportunity to serve in the Ranger Regiment, but I sure wanted it. A friend who graduated HS a year before me was there in 1st Bn. I went to a recruiter and told him I was there to sign a Ranger contract. I was a high level cross country runner, on the track team, and wrestler. I was also a boy scout/eagle, and had been to Philmont. All the recruiter told me he could promise was airborne and I could volunteer for Rangers, I spoke to my friend about this, and he assured me that this option was a guaranty for an express trip to the 82d. I REALLY wanted to sign a contract for SF, but in 1987, this wasn't an option. The fact that the recruiter said no to me meant no, now and forever, cause I was 19 and didn't have sense to wait a month or 2 and ask again. In the meantime, I found out I could join the NG and get a waiver for SF, so that's what I did. A little over a year after I signed up, I was a SF qualified 18B- back then SERE and language wasn't part of the course, but I ended up getting those later. The old guys at the guard unit gave me some advice- crush PT, and stay in the shadow of the Q course students from the Rangers, and that's what I did. They knew the right way to do things and were a great influence on a private who really didn't know his ass from his elbow. Anyway, it worked, and I somehow Forest Gumped my way through the pipeline, finished (making me a NG guy) and went back to college in Fl. After a while, I realized I didn't want to be in college or have a job that required it, so I went back to a recruiter (active army recruiter this time) with my paperwork, and told him I wanted to go on active duty and I was already SF qualified, so that's what I did. Stayed there 20 years. It was a great ride, but I always regret that I missed so much by not doing any time in the Ranger regiment. Your experience in OSUT was a lot like mine. I had to wait a few months before I could ship after I signed my contract, so I still had to drill with my guard unit, rucking, PT tests, all that. I was maxing PT tests, crushing ruck marches, running 6 minute miles all day long, and even doing real good with land nav/orienteering exercises with other people who were more experienced than me and waiting to go to the course. We also got classes on things like basic patrolling and OPORD. So when I went to Benning, the whole thing was really underwhelming, not to mention annoying and my run times actually dropped a little bit. Of course, when I showed up to Bragg, things got real in a hurry. Lots of guys quit there at the start too- soldiers who had many years in the army and were NCO's were quitting like little sissies, and here was this private with a short time in the army gutting it out. I was probably too stupid to quit. I didn't look to the quitters who couldn't do it, I looked to the Rangers and hard core soldiers who were just making it happen and had kind of took me under their wing. I didn't want to disappoint THEM. I guess those old guys in the guard unit telling me to watch the Rangers gave me the best advice I ever got in life.

I was the same way in school. My dad served in the 101st during the Korean War era(back when the 101st was Airborne). In High School I read damn near every book on the Airborne units during WW2. So when I joined out of high school in 1997 I got an 11x contract with Airborne School. After Airborne School i was sent up to Fort Richardson in Alaska. Spent a month up there and they were over strength and sent me and 4 other NCO’s who had just gotten up there to Wainwright. Was able to go to Ranger School In 99 and as soon as I could I re-enlisted for Bragg and got there in July 2001. Stayed in the same Battalion for the next 10 years until I was medically retired after Afghanistan. Going from Alaska to the 82nd was a shock lol. The difference in leadership was wild lol. And the optempo was crazy. Everything was Airborne and Ranger there lol. But you become addicted to it. You mentioned in one of your videos about always pushing forward(not resting on your laurels) especially on your down time. One thing I did and noticed was the more shit you do the better your experience will be. Go to every school you can, soldier of the month board and anything else to better yourself. And not just the high speed schools, AMO, UMO, Master Driver, Master Gunner ect. Not only is most of that convertible to college credits but it helps with promotion and your unit.

I'd like to share my approach to meeting an acceptable standard, any advice and no filter opinions will be appreciated. I'm a small guy, 5'5, cut down 15 lbs and am now maintaining 140 lbs, contemplating on cutting lower, please let me know any insight on if I should or not. My weak points are definitely running and situps. I can comfortably hit 50 full range of motion push ups, and 10-15 pullups. My run times are bad. Last time I ran a 5 mile I ran it in 50 minutes, and my last 2 mile I ran was about 19 minutes. I can rep out about 20 situps and struggle on the last 5 reps. I don't have an option 40. Back when I signed I didn't know about rangers and thought the only way I could see combat was if I went 11 series. I ship out June 18th, I'm about maybe 3 weeks away from graduating highschool, there's no better time to start. I do plan on extending whatever gets me to an acceptable standard for rasp in bct and ait, I've read that it's not enough to keep you in shape. The only thing I can come up with on my own is do something everyday and hope that it's enough; calisthenics, pushups, pullups, and situps. A run & a ruck at least once a week over the weekend, 3-5 miles on the run and whatever distance I can cover in a two hour ruck with about 30 lbs in my camping bag. I have some shoes that are the closest thing I could find to boots, I ruck in those. If running in them jnstead of normal running shoes will help out later on please let me know. My bct is in Jackson, and my AIT is in Gordon, mos is 25b. I was told by my recruiter and an active duty family member told me that volunteers can sign up for rasp at AIT, outside of that I don't know much. Any insight on details regarding the timeline, please let me know if that's true or just misinformation. Regardless of if I do get to volunteer in AIT or not, I plan on submitting a packet eventually at my first unit. Thanks for reading this far, any advice is welcome. If our training dates and locations align at all, don't hesitate to shoot me a message.

I've been following the 12 week RASP program for a while now. It's definitely good, progresses at a fairly rapid pace. My problem is combating load related issues. I find myself repeating weeks because I start to develop shins splints, Achilles tendonitis etc. But I'm going to keep hammering away at it. I'd say (I'm not a Ranger, but I met some high speed dudes while I was in) if you're still a high school student and want to get into SOF join your school's wrestling team. Still ruck and do intelligent programmed military training, but wrestling is one of those gritty sports that almost replicates some of the suck you might experience in a selection course. I definitely regret not doing it.

Unfortunately my school doesn’t have a highschool wrestling team, neither does my town. I’m currently doing soccer and so far I play full games with non stop running and muscle fatigue near the end. What would you do differently if you were in my shoes?
@TheArizonaRanger.2 жыл бұрын
@@lukasg9031 soccer is a good one to develop load tolerance. If there is a BJJ location around you that you could afford I would suggest that. As many sports as you can tolerate is recommended. On top of that make sure you're rucking and doing pushups, situps, planks, chinups/pull-ups etc. Anything the Army grades on make sure you're trying to excel in. I've seen a lot of dudes that were studs at the run because of what they did in high-school but had poor pushup technique and endurance. If your school has a weight training/strength class try to take that. Ultimately, if you're physically prepared, the only issue will be the mental game, which I why I recommended wrestling, a lot of wrestling practices are meant to break kids.

I currently play soccer, and do weightlifting (home gym) on the days when I don’t have soccer. I was also gonna sign up for track and field in the spring/summer when the snow melts. I am also doing my best to get good grades in HS. I’m really trying hard especially In Biology and Chemistry (I want to be a medic). The problem is that I live in Canada and you can’t really run in the winter when it’s -30C and the trails are covered in snow for 6-7 months lol. Do you have any recommendations for some type of cardio during the winter?
@TheArizonaRanger.2 жыл бұрын
@@lukasg9031 I definitely understand the cold getting the best of you. I was stationed at Ft Drum and we get to around -30° Fahrenheit. I'd recommend some form of anaerobic an aerobic training (Dr Andy Galpin is a good resource here on KZbin if you don't know how what those are) Jumproping is a good cardio to do inside if you have the ceiling clearance and crossfit WODs are also good for muscular endurance and cardio. Crossfit gets a bad name, but it can be efficient, you just need to be vigilant about your form. You sound dedicated and have a vision, stick with it and be consistent and you'll do fine.
@lukasg90312 жыл бұрын
@@TheArizonaRanger. yeah I definitely should be doing more crossfit type workouts. But of course with proper form. I’ve also thought about doing swimming but from what it seems, swimming isn’t super “necessary” as rangers are more on land than water, but correct me if I’m wrong. I’ll definitely check out Dr Andy! I appreciate the advice!

How does the transition for import 11Bs usually go? Particularly already tabbed 4s and 5s?
@zachthedangerranger Жыл бұрын
That shit is rough, not going to lie. If you're an E5 it's only slightly better,. Either rank you're still going to have to learn everything about the job that even the privates know, and learn it quick. Its tough to say but imports typically don't do too hot from everything I've seen. Will do a video on this in the near future

I'm a 21 year old heavily considering joining the army with an option 40 to become a Ranger. Nobody around me really understands or can relate so this channel is a cool resource. I've thought about joining the military and becoming a Ranger quite a bit, am currently preparing, and like you I don't see myself with a long carreer in the army, though it would be an important part of my life. Maybe 3 to 6 years. Since I'm planning on a life outside the military there is one question that comes to mind I havn't squared away, which is what are the chances of dying. I understand this might be a cringe question or make me sound like a noob, and normally I wouldn't ask but the Rangers are those guys getting action, I just want to understand the actual risks since I do want a life outside the military. I want to add I'm not the kind of person that would constantly be worried or preocupied about death once I accept the risks. I can see some stats online though of course they have to do with what has happened in the past so not nessesarily predictive for the future, I'm wondering what your thoughts are. 3-6 years, given I become proficient whats the % chance of death.
@ethanclark4116 Жыл бұрын
Hey bro! I'm 24 and just signed a contract for option 40, leaving in a couple months. I went to college and started working and I realized it sucked and I didn't want to be just another person with a career working in an office or whatever. But from what I've heard older guys (like 21 and up) have a better chance of making it through because they like the maturity (and of course I think it's a better thing to have in general when going to a warzone)
