@@Gilliebeany ours were really gnarly. It was the triple waterway merge of the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean so the tides were extreme. There was a Lighthouse about 1/4 mile from shore we swam to as teens. It's not safe to swim to now as there's 100% more boats. Only my oldest got to do it. ( there was a phone number to call for boats due to come in or out through that section) It's called Ledge Lighthouse.

@@your.daddys.girl.5676 well in all my years of school, I’ve never really been taught of how dangerous the ocean is. My teacher has always said, “there’s more important things you need to know about before that.” And due to COVID I haven’t done swimming lessons for around 2 and a half years. The only important things we did during swimming, is where you’d bring FULL pyjamas (like long-sleeved top, and trousers.) you’ll wear them over your swimsuit and then our teacher would go over things about drowning, Etc. Then we’d be partnered and would pretend to be drowning and we’d basically save each other. That’s the only stuff i ever learned about ocean safety from my early years of school. :|

I wonder if Bondi has ever thought of using drones? You could send out inflatable life preservers that could be used to give the lifeguards more time to get to people. Also, it may help the lifeguards pinpoint where people are drowning. Ive noticed sometimes call outs are not enough to find people in a timely manner. I personally would love to be a drone pilot for a large beach lifeguard team such as the Bondi team. Also, way cheaper then having a search helicopter (Which I understand is the police and not the lifeguards) but would still be very helpful.

Adding to your great comment; using a drone will also let them monitor and confirm shark presence on water which will give them more confidence on activating the shark alarm. Maybe they don’t use drones due to wind conditions and the risk of hurting the public by accident or even it can be perceived as a privacy issue due to the fact that it has a camera and can record. I agree with you @Kyle Thomas; using a drone can be beneficial for everyone safety.

Hey I love the content. I was at Bondi 10 years ago. I remember going at night one time with some local friends and they insisted on staying at the pool. That was solid advice, they knew the dangers of swimming at night there. The pool was almost empty and it was such a nice experience. During the day take your precautions, swim between flags, learn how to avoid rips and listen to the lifeguards... during the night simply DONT GO.

Not sure why none of the signs on the beach are translated to Mandarin/Cantonese or Korean, when so many folks who get into rips by accident off Bondi don't fully understand english...lifeguards are always asking why people don't stay between the flags, but I'm from Canada and have no idea what flag colors indicate, and certainly if I didn't speak english fluently it would be impossible to know what the different flags/signs mean. It's easy enough to translate a few signs in order to communicate with as many people as possible in a tourist-heavy area.

I agree totally, but also still going to another country you should be prepared to understand a little bit of that language or have something/someone on you to translate or clarify. I agree, Ive been thinking of ways that they could improve there tactics. I just made a post on how they could use drones at Bondi.
@rb2k196
@rb2k196 2 жыл бұрын
We trialled drones at a beach where I do some seasonal work and it's 50/50. The drones that us and most councils can afford don't have great battery life or range so you can only observe so much past the shoreline; two, health and safety risk of drones around swimmers - our beach isn't too busy but it was something we had to consider with risk assessment so drones on Bondi with more people might be more of a risk. Also, they've gotta be charged up regularly bc of the battery life so it's not like you can have it hovering over the beach looking for people in trouble. However it did give us a birds eye view and let us see things sooner than from the life guard station so it does have benefit. I think the prime benefit of one to Bondi would really only be for Shark observations when one is reported out in the water
@kylethomas6659
@kylethomas6659 2 жыл бұрын
@@rb2k196 thanks for the input! Ya I had figured someone had at least thought of this idea and tried it. But yes, I forgot about most drone rules about flying over people and I figured the battery would be an issue. Maybe down the line in like 10 years or so we will have better tech to help out in the air. Again thanks for the input from an actual drone pilot! Really cool!

How would you manage the extra weight and the charging needs? You can't exactly run a cable down to where they store the boards and adding powerful enough speakers, amps, and batteries will add a lot of weight to the boards which something they definitely don't want.

There should be some kind of motor underneath those surfboards connected to the front tip to help the lifeguards get out there faster

It just occurred to me that sign language might be one of the more rare languages used in the world. According to the WHO, about 5% of the population experiences hearing loss. But not all of those use sign exclusively. Many of them will use hearing aids, etc, or use sign along with reading lips depending on when the hearing loss occurred. For me, it's discouraging, because although I've studied ASL, I know that sign language is different depending on the country. So I couldn't even help a deaf person using sign who was from Australia, unless I had specifically studied Australian sign. It's too bad, it's such a beautiful language too.

If those deaf girls couldn’t speak as well as they could it would have made the rescue so much worse…

in case of panic, there is something you can do if you are a guy and have a normal/long swimsuit, fill it with air. splash on the water and bring the bubbles inside while you close the swimsuit, it will make you float a little bit

Have they ever thought of getting translators? I’ve been watching several clips and noticed that a majority of them are Asians Or like maybe announcements in different languages because language barriers occur really easily

Not a bad idea maybe the announcements could say things the lifeguards all the time. Like "please swim between the flags" in the most common languages spoken like mandarin, Korean, German, Dutch etc.
