Amazing how many people commenting about there being no danger. With so many "fails" videos around I just don't get it. Anyway thanks for sharing some of the most satisfying machining I've seen in a while. It is quite easy to forget that there is such precision involved when the part is BIG. One expects tiny tolerances in tiny parts but it is even more important on huge machinery where a tiny mistake can become a giant fail. Kudos to these guys that keep our huge machines operating with all the precision of watchmakers.

Roll in and out of those milling cuts 👍🏿 The huge electrical power plant parts on the lathe, that's relaxing work once you get into it. But that gear hobbing, those massive gears, is an art, a science, and witchcraft...

I was a manual machinist for more than 37 years and I would machine parts on a Meuser engine lathe with Chuck diameter of 9ft with bed length of 85ft 4inches, running dril stems for Haliburton.

I enjoyed using a lathe, 20 feet between centers with a 48 inch chuck!! 30 HP drive motor. Ken wouldn't let anyone but me use it. And you are 100% correct, it is not dangerous if you know how to use it!! Though sometimes the materials can give us surprises that we don't expect, but do plan for just in case....

I have a floor model Bridgeport type mill. It is considered a hobby machine because the speed adjustment is done by changing belt positions, but it is solid and precise none the less. The best thing I did was to retrofit it as a 3 axis CNC!! I stretched the table travel from 16 inches to 26 inches!! I also added a two speed reduction so it went from 9 speed to 18 speed to turn large diameter tools!! I am ready to retrofit anyone's machine if they need it done!! I ain't free though..... Still can be much cheaper than buying a premade CNC if you are in the area where I live!!
@BLMCFR4 жыл бұрын
I also have a rotary table that I can incorporate if needed and have 4 axis CNC if I need to!!!!
