Dangerous Garage Door Springs Exposed!

This video is to inform you of a type of spring and bracket that exists on one piece garage doors with a jam pivot style design. This system is unsafe and should be replaced as soon as possible. The hook bracket is open and will allow the spring to shoot across the garage when it breaks. This spring also does not have a safety cable installed in the cylinder. Safety hooks and springs are available for replacement. Inspect your garage door, or call your local garage door company.

I work on garage doors and if I were called to fix that I would recommend they switch to torsion springs with rail tracks, much safer and better design.

Why am I watching this video? Because this is exactly what happened. Nice Christmas present for me, I have no idea how it didnt hit the car. The spring was on the far side of the garage.

Why would the home owner have put the newer bracket on the right side, but not the left?! Seems to me those should be upgraded in pairs.

"Safety first, all the time" is the right module. I'm in search for those model bracket. Anyone knows any hardware that sells them other than that ". " Their always that fix too keep occupied. If you get involved got to create decently .

How do you kill the tension on a spring like that

On ours, at the lower fixing point for the spring is a long threaded rod. With the door in the open position (minimal spring tension) the nut is loosened until the spring is in its unstretched state. Scary too how much stored energy those springs have with the door in the closed position.
