Thank you for this. I've had to come into a job left half done by another person with close to zero knowledge of what to do. Your video helped me feel comfortable enough to get the job done safely

I bought the same brand of spring from HD which says maximum overall safe length when stretched is 67”. My door weighs 125” and I bought the yellow code rated for 130 lbs. I just installed it and the spring is 69” when stretched and door are balanced. I’m not sure what to do to adjust it to 67”. Any ideas?

Since I am not a professional door installer, I do not want to incorrectly direct you. If I were facing that situation, I would look at either adjusting the dimensions of the brackets where the springs attach or adjusting the cable length so the spring stretch is limited to 67". Without seeing your setup, my concern would be why the extra travel - is your door taller than average?

My garage door is a standard 8’x7’. I will adjust the bracket and see if I can get to 67”

The springs are color coded. It looks like you brought the 110 lbs white springs and there was blue springs on the door.

I am not sure why the old springs were painted blue, unless there was a difference or inconsistency in the color code 16 years ago. I do not recall where they were purchased back then. As shown, I weighed the door and confirmed the weight before buying replacement springs. I would expect if the old springs were 140 lb rated as the blue color code on the box said, then the door would not have stayed fully down when closed. That one is a head-scratcher.

im actually looking to do this exact thing.. arent your springs that you were replacing "blue" so heavier than you bought?
@par64guy Жыл бұрын
The springs I replaced were 16 years old which may have been a different brand with different color coding from the brand I bought this time.

How much should one expect to pay for this service to be done for their garage?

I'm not sure, as I never hired anyone to do it.

This is a bit dangerous in sequence. You suggest weighing the door after spring cable is disconnected. The door is then down. Without spring assist how do you get it up to reinstall springs?

Firstly, thank you for watching! It was not an issue for me because I am physically capable of deadlifting a 100+lb door. Of course, viewers who decide to take on this project will have to do it at their own risk and understand the physical demands of the task. I also had to measure the door because it had been so long since the springs had been replaced, and I did not remember the door's weight. So, it ended up being a good opportunity to illustrate on the video.

A safer approach is needed. While many post 80s doors are light, older doors are often in the 170-210 lb range.

Good catch. I was so concerned with getting the shot on the camera that I didn't notice the missing section of the flange. That will go on my list of things to replace.

The rollers looked okay to me and they spin easily. What am I missing that is tipping you off that they need to be replaced?
