That is percieved loudness, that is the affect of the mid range compression, it's not louder on the meters

Why not just use a multi band comp then?

His compressor is listening to the mids but still compressing the whole mix. A multi band compressor would affect each band differently.

@@thettmtt The compressor is over the whole mix but listening to a boosted mid range, the compressor is reacting mostly to the exaggerated mids, this helps to drive the mid range to the front of the mix while leaving the bass and top end alone. This way the compressor will not bite down on the mid range when a kick hits and will not effect the transients of the top end. He treats his kick with limiting before it sums with the drum buss, so when it hits the stereo buss, he doesn't want to/need to touch it. From other videos he shows how he does this in mid/side too where the dangerous comp can be in dual mono mode - that really exceeds the scope of the video in that way he can get the mid range in the middle to come forward and get the side top end to sparkle. He does show in a different video how he does do this with FabFilter Multi-band, where he compresses the mid range, then uses upward expansion on the bass and the topend bands where the top-end's detector is from the bass region. Luca is the man.

You should NEVER EVER use a multiband compressor for mastering music. *UNLESS* you are de-essing the 5 kHz to 7kHz range only! For example, using FF Pro MB to dip harshness, etc.
