Been using the same old style red plastic gas can for fifty years, just had to replace the nozzle and vent cap once. It works for me. Here in Japan a couple of years ago, the government passed a law that prevents gas stations from filling up plastic gas cans of any type, they say they are dangerous.... I don't have a clue. You have to use metal ones for the fill up, I fill up my plastic can from the metal one. Diesel and kerosene the stations will accept plastic cans, just not gas.

Be realistic, there Bubba. You have a Partner saw that is cutting re-bar for 4 union Ironworkers. Send the guys home and tell them to come back later while the saw cools off? It just don't work that way in the real world, Bunky. Let's get some real world data here. - The auto ignition temperature of gasoline is 536 degrees. - Bad things start to happen to an engine if the block/oil temp gets much over like 250. Even the exhaust rarely gets to 400 when it's running!!!!!! If you manage to get anything on your engine over 500 degrees re-fueling is not going to be a problem. - Rep-BUILDING is what you are going to be looking at.

Vent caps are available for purchase online. Just drill a hole in the back and pop in the vent cap. The U.S. government did not design these gas cans. The specified requirements for manufacturers to meet. The manufacturers designed them poorly to meet those specifications as cost effectively (cheaply) as possible. The primary reason for this design was to prevent gas from spilling when the cans were knocked over. That is what they do. Unfortunately, the design is hard to use, spills gas, and posses the risk you described. It is the failure of the manufacturers to deign them properly and the failure of the government to completely specify the operating parameters.

I had the exact same thing happen to me using on of these cans, I also went to vent one and had a blast of gas shoot from the can about 6 feet. Another real danger with these cans are if they build up enough pressure from increased outside tempeture it will cause the fuel to travel up the interior stem and leak everywhere outside the can, this is a real fire harazard to anyone storing them in a vehicle or truck bed. As a precaution I now press in the sides of the can while venting to allow for some pressure to build in the can when not in use. I know if the sides are bulged out the can is pressurized. These cans are truly dangerous and even though I reached out to the maker of my cans with concerns about pressure build up and release, they did not seem to care one bit, profit over safety I guess.

Them cans don't vent at the spout. They vent at the sealing cap when the spout is stored inside the can. That is why their is 2notches on the black screw cap. Whey you tighten the black screw cap lid all the way it is completely sealed for transport to the gas station for fill up. When you open up this cap to the 1st notch the cap and plug will loosen up just enough to vent the gas fumes out but it won't open all the way until you turn it past the second notch to take it off completely. It took me a bit to figure it out . Always turn the cap or the spout very slowly to vent before each use Rule Of Thumb!!
@paulmoffat9306 Жыл бұрын
They were NOT after 'safety' in that can design, they were following EPA regulations to reduce VOC discharges. On the can that I have, I removed the 'safety intelock' so the flow can be started just by pushing the spout in the can, because just try to lift a 5 gal can to the fill point on a CAR, trigger and push at the same time - you can't get a hand to depress the lock in that small recessed opening on a car! BTW, Harbor Freight gas cans, with dual handles are the BEST, and are made of much thicker plastic than the Wally, store versions.

My old gas can works fine. I just use a funnel when filling up the mower (not using the hose) and carefully pour the gas into the mower and never spill the gas, then I simply screw the caps back on. Furthermore, when I buy gas at the service station I only fill the 5 gallon tank just halfway as it will take a couple months to use up that amount of gas. You don't want to use gas that gets too old, otherwise you may have starting/operating problems as the carbonator can get gummed up as the molecular makeup of the gas slowly deteriorates.. I use up and run the mower empty each time I cut the grass so I seldom have those problems. My mower runs for 90 minutes on the mower's tank when full, so I pretty much have that down to a science!!! Screw the government!!! Also, I never keep a gas can outside into the sun or where someone can come and take it. I always keep it inside the windowless garage where the temperature never gets above 85 degrees and making sure there is nothing near the can.

Sorry you feel that way about the "government designed" CARB Cans... I too Hate them to a degree. In the Thumbnail you have a version I saw way too often on Briggs and Stratton Cans. That design IMO was horrible because the O-Ring seal when the safety lock is released and the Nozzle is "opened" a fair amount of fuel would often seep past the O-Ring and leak all over the place. Not good. Now there are other designs and manufacturers that don't use that design. There is one particular version that (while I don't own) looks to provide all the "required" Government safety and can be "vented" prior to lifting/filling the can. Basically it just has a "push button" valve so as long as someone holds the button it is "open". No need for two or 3 hands and contortionist work to get fuel into a vehicle or require it to sit/push on the tank lip... Which on various older tanks (be they Plastic or Metal just aren't up to the task of handling the stress/weight of a can full of fuel "flexing" it for minutes at a time)

There is probably way more gas vapors getting into the atmosphere in one day from splilled gas because of this stupid gas can spout design than would have evaporated from old style gas cans in a year! Worst design ever! How are we supposed to maintain enough pressure with just one hand on a slippery plastic nozzle that usually has gas leaking all over it, while simultaneously trying to hover a heavy gas can full of gasoline over a 2" gas tank opening and trying to leave enough of a gap so that we can see when the tank is full, while also dealing with the whole thing trying to twist in all different directions as we are pouring? If you haven't tried this before, it's really fun, especially when you have sweat pouring off your forehead and trying to drip into the tank you're trying to fill!
