Great demonstration of logging in a tight spot! I think I'm gonna get my hands on a few Guardian Angels. Not for myself, mind you, but for my dad and some other people I know whose safety can always use an assist. Thanks, Tim!

I always find it interesting that you and many sawyers start with the top of the notch instead of the bottom. I never figured out why. I always start with the bottom cut because I can stand in front of the tree with my back to the direction I want it to fall. I hold the saw parallel to the ground and pointing in the direction I want the tree to go. I start my cut at the depth I want my notch and then swing the saw across the tree maintaining the depth of the cut. When I get to the other side I use the sight on the saw casing to check I'm in the right place. This gives me the correct place to start and end the top cut on my notch. I've tried cutting the top of the notch first, but found it was less accurate. I'm not exactly new to felling trees. I bought my first chain saw when I was 17 and I'm over 70. I chopped cord wood for while and drove a cable skidder when I was younger. I'd love to have your 550xp, but I can't afford it and I no longer need a saw that big. My 372xp just gave up the ghost.
@glenpomeroy20475 жыл бұрын
The reason you make the top cut first Bill, is so you can look down the cut to see when your bottom cut matches up with the top cut and you don't create an overcut or what was once called a "Dutch Cut". In order to keep your bar level when doing the top cut you can use the sight lines on the saw.
@Canopus685 жыл бұрын
@@glenpomeroy2047 Okay, that's why I do it the way I do it. Once I have my bottom cut set I match the upper cut to the bottom. The bottom cut shows me where the upper cut goes. As both a logger and carpenter I always found it easier to deal with straight lines instead of curved ones. I was just wondering as all the loggers I've worked with in New England do the way I do it. No big deal. Thank you for the insight.
@nekoroms5 жыл бұрын
Also isnt it easier for the tree to grab the saw if you do the horizontal cut first and not the other way round
@Canopus685 жыл бұрын
@@nekoroms Not sure what you are saying. I've used the flat cut first for more than 55 years. If you think about it, when you cut the top first then all the weight of the piece you cut is on the top. As you make the flat cut then top "falls" on the chainsaw bar and chain. I volunteer with a land conservation organization. We often have work days where we cut trails, build bridges and do rock work. If we're dropping trees, there are often 3 or 4 of us working on different sections of the trail. At least two of those people are professional foresters. All of us use the same flat cut first then the top cut. When I was logging the chopper (also know as a feller) used the flat cut first method. While I was working for that company I drove a cable skidder. One other consideration is that out west or when cutting high value timber they do the flat cut first and then do an angle cut up from the bottom called a Humboldt notch. That way they don't lose a section of the log when making the notch. As they say different strokes for different folks. As long as it works and it's safe that's what's important.

Cool video, all orange equipment! Phillip is growing up fast, I remember how small he was in the first video's he was in. It is great that your family includes your kids in what you do. There is nothing like working with your dad. They will always remember the time you spent with them. My dad and grandpa always included me in what ever project they had going. The lessons I learned are far more valuable than anything I ever learned in school. Now I am sharing time with my grand kids. You and your family deserve a lot of respect, not only for the way you treat your family, but how you treat others. I am glad to be subscribed to your channel.

That GA strobe light is really neat-GREAT safety device!!!Your team and the Kubota,Husquvarna saws work well together.The chip you showed from the saw shows the chain teeth are sharp and cutting well.This is the same sort of chip you want to see coming off circular saws,band saws.

Professional! I don’t cut trees down but I do cut them up and haul them off. I’ve always used the yellow clip chains. Is the X2 chain different? Where can you buy them? How does the 572 compare to a Stihl 441? I bought a Kubota kx-040 and I’m real happy with it. My job sites are usually real tight.

That Guardian Angel is a cool thing. I could see having one in case you broke down or if you had a flat tire. I was thinking you could make a bracket like you said, but just use a 2 1/2 inch wood screw and screw it into the log. Or a couple of screws. I'm not a tre cutter but we had both kinds of saws Stihl and Husky and I really liked the Husky saws.

Nice looking Mini! We took some big cottonwoods down next to our house one time and I had to crawl up them about 20ft and hook the mainline from my dad's Clark 664 to them and he pulled while I cut and we kept them off the house. Scary and fun!

Kevin was vocally coaching a couple of those trees. Has he tried the new saws, I saw him with chaps on?
@danielsweeney67425 жыл бұрын
Tim I see you plunge cut into the tree, does that help the chain saw from getting stuck? I was always told not to plunge cut because the chain saw could kick back. Might be bad info I was given?
@firewoodwarrior43965 жыл бұрын
The method he's using is the safest method to use. He sets his hinge first and then sets the trigger, doesn't get any safer than that. Bore cut is a must when felling trees with a hard lean or trees that are dead. The risk of kickback only occurs if you don't start your bore cut with a pulling chain.
