a properly set up carb will do exactly the same as fuel injection..... you still want the same air-fuel mix sure.... it takes a LOT more work and skill to set up a carb correctly....... while most EFI systems auto adjust in seconds might make starting it quicker, however thats really the whole point.... less maintenance.... and jim bob cant fuck with the carb ..... then leave a 1 star review because it runs like shit ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- but then again...... my old 77 chevy pickup with a 400 cubic inch v8, full time 4 wheel drive, and a mechanical secondary Q-jet 4 barrel carb .....it gets 10mpg.... on a good day ANYWAY..... it will start in -50f, with no block heater..... when my 97 to 06 GM cars....even with block heaters plugged in, wont start (only 1/4 of kids showed up to school that day) pull the choke... pump it twice, and turn it over VA! ROOM! fires right up but ive got all smog deleted (montana has ZERO emissions laws)..... and rebuilt the carb my self spent DAYS dialing it in but god damn does it run good...... only has ~35,000 miles on it, due to the fuel economy (which is mostly the full time 4 wheel drive....and aerodynamics like a brick)

I always enjoy seeing the expertise of your brother's saw work. Today's video prompted a couple questions. I would love to hear your brother explain his techniques of cross-cutting his felled tree. I noticed that he makes a cut around the circumference with the tip of his saw before finishing the center part of the crosscut. I'm assuming it has to do with avoiding getting his saw pinched. The other technique I noticed today was the two small flat cuts on either side of his hinge wood. I would enjoy hearing from him both how this helps him and how I should do it correctly myself. Thanks!
@julianeaston86075 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, far from it but I suspect Tim does those flat cuts by the hinge to clear the bark, and is then better sighted to keep his bore cut straight and true to line for the hinge.
@JohnMcNerney5 жыл бұрын
The two small cuts on either side of the hinge help to prevent fiber pull. If you've ever seen a stump with "horns" of wood sticking up from one or both ends of the hinge, that's fiber pull: you've pulled some of the wood out of the butt of the log. Not a big deal if you are cutting firewood, but it can ruin the end of a saw log: the log's grade may be reduced due to the defect: fewer or shorter good boards can be sawed out of it since those chunks are missing. If you are cutting a veneer-grade log (which can be big Dollar/ big Krona selling price), significant fiber pull can cause it to be downgraded to a saw log. The likelihood of this happening varies with the species of wood. The chance also increases significantly if your felling cuts are down near the root flare of the stump. (As a side benefit, as @Julian Easton noted, it does make it easier to see what hinge dimensions you are setting up.)

Echos exactly what the local saw shop guy says. Nobody who's working mountain cuts is biting, because if they quit there's no working on them remotely. I'm sticking with my older 038, 044 and 056 for that reason..they have a carb or ignition problem a half day from town, I'm usually able to patch 'em back together and keep going. I do like the idea of EFI for altitude, keep from having to guess jetting. I'd worry a bit about fuel, tho, as injected engines generally have less tolerance for contamination. Keeping perfectly clean fuel is tough in the woods, ask the guys running Tier IV equipment.

I don't see any reason to get critical of what a guy is familiar with, knows how to fix, can do on site if needed, and doesn't require more than basic tools. Not to criticize, but the STIHL MS500i is the first chainsaw with ELECTRIC injection. Not at all the first saw in the world with injection. Actually there are several older chainsaws that had a type of injection. For example the Norwegian "Bamse", from the 50ˋs, which had a mechanical injection driven by a valve on the crankshaft. Nice video by the way! :D

My carbureted saws aren't fuel injected. Air passing through a constriction by the jet port creates a venturi vacuum and sucks fuel into the intake. So try again.

No offense intended here by any means but....I was picked by our local Saw Dealer to try this exact same model saw here in the USA and I should say I am a full time Faller/Logger and have 30+ yrs experience. I was a strict Stihl Saw only person for many years but like alot of fallers I know they began a steady decline in Quality, Dependability, and all at an Increase of Price so a few years ago I switched my own stable of Work Saws over to all Husqvarna but one old Stihl saw I had that wad very old but from back when they were way above average in Quality of Saw....and to be 100% honest that old saw has NEVER ONCE LET ME DOWN....EVER....I still have it today as a matter of fact....its bolted to a 32" Tsumura Pro lite Bar and I still drag it out every so often...(yes its ported and highly modified but it needed to be for the wood we were cutting back then)....anyway long story short...I took this saw out with a 18" bar and used it just like I would My 550XP which is fitted with a 18" Tsumura Pro Lite Bar and 3/8"-.58" chain and I put it through 11 days of non stop 7-8-9 hour days felling and limbing and Bucking Ponderosa Pine and White Fir and the first 2 days it ran flawlessly...but the 3rd day about noon it started acting up....so I knew the Dealer we buy all our Saws through would be at his shop I was ready to take a lunch Break anyway so I quick called him and told him what,it was doing and he said he would drive out and get the saw and for me to call him that night on my way home....After lunch I took my 550 and went back to work when I quit for the day because of the failing light and got to my Truck he had come got the saw. I called him, made arrangements to pick it up on my way to work the next day and went on. Well it worked alright but still had a bad bog and it would stutter and miss when you were 3/4 of the way through a tree when bucking it and no matter what the dealer (a very sharp mechanic by the way) it never performed again like it did those first couple of days. He has since sent the saw back and I am back working with my stable of Husqvarna XP saws so I didnt have a very good experience with it. I did however like the way they have tried to get back to a Quality Saw.....if they keep it up and hold down cost to the guys,who purchase them....they might have something for Husqvarna in a couple of years.

In an air cooled engine, you check head temperature, not exhaust, to decide fuel mixture. So injection only adds complexity, when all that's really needed is a mechanical temperature driven mixture control for the carb. But either way, they'll both shorten the saws life by leaning it (running it hotter) to reduce emissions.
@manueldelbusto7252 жыл бұрын
Imagine caring about emissions on a chainsaw
@neilmurphy8452 жыл бұрын
Yeah but of course they're going to have a cylinder head temperature sensor to keep an eye on the temperature and mix it accordingly my guess would be it also has a O2 sensor just like a car so it'll never run lean but I could be wrong.

Looks like more parts to break or go bad. I'm sure it will cost more for the "high tech" parts. Stihl makes more money on selling parts than the saws themselves. Ask most your local stihl shops. Margins are much higher on the parts.
