Hey DF! Here’s something interesting you can try! So at one point during a play through, I needed extra money, so I went to Pierre’s and sold a bunch of stuff (like bread from the trash can, holly, sap, etc.). The next day or so, I saw that he had the items I sold to him on sale. Within a day, a couple items were gone, presumably purchased by an NPC. I talked with Shane a day or so later, and he said something like “I bought bread from Pierre the other day. It was foul! No wonder he was selling it for so cheap!”. I haven’t been able to experiment with this much, but I just wonder what else the NPCs say depending on what you sell?

Going to see if i can find the rates of how the trash and newspaper break down on average, but glasses and CDs break down into 1 refined quartz each guaranteed. So that’s 25 year 1 and 22 for year 2, they sell for 50 gold each, so that is 1250 and 1100 respectively. But they are better for crafting than selling. Will try and see if i can approximate a value for the other 2. Edit: the trash will be incredibly hard to estimate and average, but newspapers have a 90/10 split for torch/cloth. I would estimate that year 1 would more likely produce 2 cloth, and year 2 would likely produce 1. Not entirely accurate, since RNG, but more than likely on average, these will be your results: 45 torchs and 2 cloth year 1, for 225+940 for a total of 1165 gold, year 2 would be 33 torches and 1 cloth for 165+470 for 635 gold. Thats an estimate, you could technically get 17 cloth year 1 and 0 cloth year 2. It’s RNG. But these are rough estimates to go off of. Edit #2: so i painstakingly collected 100 trash (i refuse to gather 1000, i could cheat but for this? No. Plus can’t cheat recycling machines on console) breaking down the 100 trash i got 112 stone, and 41 each or iron and coal, showing that they average about the same, and the total profit from straight selling all of that would be 1,249, divide by 100 and round it a bit, about 12.5 gold per trash on average. So with that in mind i calculated for year 1 the trash was worth approximately 175 gold and year 2 would be approximately 238 gold (can’t earn half golds) So in total, past the two edits, year 1 was worth a total of approximately 2,590 gold, while year 2 was approximately 1,973 gold, about 600 less if it follows the trends i have found. Was this worth exploring so deeply? HELL NO! Kids, learn from my mistakes, do not try and go above and beyond over stupid garbage, literally!

you really dont seem to understand the value of trash. selling as is means they are worth 0, but the most common return from a recycling machine is refined quartz, which is worth substantially more, and saves the valuable coal for ores while still giving you a steady flow of materials needed for items like sprinklers. i believe the full set of items you can get back is wood, coal, torches, refined quartz, and cloth, all of which is either some nice free value from bad fishing days and garbage checking, or valuable resources for crafting. the item return does depend on the trash that you put in, though...

From the Stardew Wiki: In version 1.4, they added an 8th can near the JojaMart, and along with normal finds, you might (if you've built the theatre) get corn or a movie ticket. Recycling would've earned another 2200-2500 per year, more with the rancher/artisan skills (for the cloth)

6+ years later I finally tried this game and the Automate mod is still one of the best things ever. IMO it makes the game a lot more fun, because instead of repeating the same chores every day, I can spend my time automating everything. And boy oh boy do I love automating things.

For anyone wondering, luck as nothing to do with what you get. What you get every day in each year is predetermined when you create your save file. You can analyse your save data to see what you would get in every bin for every day for hundreds of years. DF just got lucky the second time around in general, luck has no effect.

The trash you find gets progressively more valuable as you progress in the game, certain milestones unlock more items in the trashcans. So, not quiterepresentative and far from maximum value/year, not to mention the autmatable recycling you didn't do. Will try out that mod though, sounds amazing.

The recycler thing is very useful, you can get Iron ore and stone from trash, refined quartz from broken glasses and discs, cloth, coal, and torches from soggy newspapers and driftwood, all for just 1 iron, some wood, and some stone!

nice!! i started to try doing that with automate mod and chests, too :D some days i let it go, see what happens i wasn't sure if i had to go into the town's screen to make it spawn, but seems i can sleep for a year, if i want to, yay!! i didnt even read about this, i was like "hmm, lets try.... ok, it does work :O" now villagers don't lose hearts for you, as you don't check the garbage cans :) and yes, i tried looking in the chests when a villager was nearby (shane and sam mostly) .... i did screw up today, when i made a new character, and looked into the museum garbage can, not seeing Penny.... she did talk about it, and i thought she would be used to that by now (see: Pam) gotta tell Linus to do it that way at george's trash i also tried it myself to use cobblestone path to link the 2 that you cannot put a chest against now dear DF, i want to know: who has the least brain capacity, Pam or Haley? i mean, what Pam has should be mostly rotten away, and what haley has(?).... yeah....
