It is so true that people don’t realize how many dangers come with an EMS job. You really never know what you’re going into. A couple years ago I went on a call for an elderly lady that was disoriented, turns out she was having a schizophrenic episode and 5 minutes into that call I ended up with a bloody nose after she punched me in the face. Shortly after that she pulled a knife on me and we had to call the police to come assist because neither my partner or I could restrain her.

I found having worked in EMS that sharp instincts saved me more than once from violent encounters and other situations, don't override your instincts with thinking.

Being an Emt for any significant period of time in nyc or Newark nj will show you the importance of body armor.

I definitely agree EMT school could've done a better job preparing me for the streets

They dont prepare you for the baby that just drowned and you couldnt bring back to life. They dont teach how to deal with the intense stress of the job itself. Main thing today is media. Everyones a damn reporter nowadays that will never report the good you do, but is super fast to report the good you didnt do. Thats whats wrong with so many today. Nobody cares about others anymore. They will ruin someone for a dollar. In my opinion, a pile of shit has more worth than someone like that.

Not related to this video, but I just wanted to thank you for all of the information you put out there about the fire service and what to expect with everything from the hiring process to the actual job, I just got hired full time to a department in mohave county, AZ straight out of the academy at 19 y/o. I hope to continue to learn and maybe even have debates with you in the future!

Its definitely a risk benefit analysis. We talk about it in the fire service when we look at buildings and fire loads etc..... but its not so much talked about in EMS. The other thing to think about is as a young firefighter you have older guys and officers talking about it and always teaching/influencing. In private EMS it is sometimes two limited experience people. Who just don't think the same way fire crews do.

I’m not sure what percent of postictal patients are violent but I’ve had a bunch! Goes from a Calm seizure call to World War III in no time. Great video!

I had one on the side of the freeway, he had had the seizure and crashed his car. We get him on the gurney and he gets agitated. I was soloing his chest, we had highway patrol and one fire holding his legs my partner and the engineer are holding his arms, another officer holding his head. I'm 6'5" 315, former Offensive Lineman, I'm trying to hold this guy down and he's literally picking me off the ground. It was terrifying.

Varies too wildly to say. Ultimately, it's up to your program director and instructors. Thankfully, mine were outstanding.

Sorry for you getting so upset but I lived with a San Francisco Fire Fighter for 10 years. He used to laugh saying the best part of his job was who was cooking what. There is no way in heck a firefighter is going to be able to combat a fully involved structure fire in a high rise building. Not possible. The ladders carried on a truck only reach 7stories if they are lucky. So what is the purpose of a truck. Tax payers are paying four men to stand by just in case someday they may have a need? Civil servants with a hero complex is all a truck company is now a days. Ladder the building. How did that work for the firefighters on 9/11? When you have something worth me listening to then talk to me otherwise firefighters are a drain of resources period.

Firefighters do not do any type of community service. They drink on the job and whatever they want. Do not ever call me a troll. The reason the fire department in San Francisco took the ambulance service away from Public Health is to give themselves relevance. Otherwise you would have never seen a fire apparatus at a transport of a patient to a hospital. Troll I think NOT. Informed ABSOLUTLEY. I was in communications during the transition of ambulances to the Sf fire Department. Is not funny to have seen their statistics increase 5 fold just because the fire department was showing up to calls they had no business being at. The paramedics on the ambulances noticed what was happening and one third of them quit or retired in a o e year period of becoming part of the fire department. Their workload increased to keep the lazy firefighters in a job. TROLL no way in heck. Have you ever seen a SF fire station? The engines and tricks get washed 5 times a week. Who washes their own car 5 times a week? How about playing with kids in after school programs or making sure older adults in their district were ok. No. They want to bake cookies and make belly bombs (tuna with cheese under the broiler) I am specifically speaking of Firehouse 11 on 26th Street in San Francisco. Go there. Look at their kitchen. Stay there for a day. Then call me a troll. Don’t pone a bear. Tell them you are a paramedic and want to get a feel for their job by walking in their shoes for a day. The Chief there is Rex Hale. Otherwise you are exactly what I thought you would be. Get a thesaurus come up with a better word than troll.
