Stumbled on this doing research on an 8N at a farm I work on that will not start for me. Great video. IMHO our country would be better off with girls wanting to follow the example set by Rachel versus any number of vapid Hollywood celebrities. Great to see a father / daughter team working on old iron together. Bravo!

Purchased a 640 Ford recently. The VIN made no sense, and the distributor dust cover was chewing up on the underside. Also the rotor was floppy, it's amazing it ran well. Scheduled a 15 minute consult with Dan and he gave me the exact production number VIN clarification--it's a 1955. He also advised they have had a lot of trouble with the electronic ignitions made you know where, which have an almost 100% failure rate in the long run. He made sure I had the correct wires to the distributor. So, I ordered the parts to fix the scuffing and floppy rotor, and a set of reasonably priced parts from Dan to convert it back quickly when the electronic unit fails. He also confirmed the timing can easily be static timed in the field. Thrilled to find such high quality help, and Dan is a great American preserving our heritage as well. Going forward, we intend to use this tractor regularly, and I am very confident we have a friendly expert to call on if we need help.

We just moved to Goodrich, MI, and have a small farm off Dutch Road. We stopped by the Steiner store in Lennon, Mi, and boy were we disappointed in the rudeness of its sales staff. My husband took a picture of me sitting in the store and the sales clerk said there's no taking photos inside the store! He further went on to say they signed legal documentation to prevent photos from being taken. We were berated and made to feel shame... (We won't be going back there again, and they should have a sign that says no cameras allowed!). Shame on Steiner ....

I'm glad I found your channel. I just spent the last 2 days giving my 1953 8n B. an oil change and tune up for the 1st. Time in 25 years. I couldn't bring myself to pay $ 25.00 for an oil fiter so... I disasembled the NAPA filter canister and replaced the string filter with a roll of Toilet Paper. It took me a couple of hours to get that string out. It was completly solidìfied with metal filings, teflon from myself adding 1/2 quart of Slick 50 when I changed the oil once a year.

Years ago when I seen one of Rachel’s videos I told my buddy how weird a first date between her and I would be. “ hey I had someone try to put a automotive solenoid on a 601 Ford today and it wouldn’t run, how’s your steak?” Lol, that would be the dialect.

Once you pull the points, it is a very good time to get some break parts cleaner on a rag and clean the points cam (Lobes) in the distributor. Old grease becomes one with dust and dirt to form a very rough surface. Not only does that surface wear the points arm prematurely, it causes a variation in spark (dwell) which will cause an uneven idle and reduced efficiency. Clean it and consider polishing it so those points don't have a bouncy ride and your tractor will have the even beat idle you want.
@johnchalleen3278
@johnchalleen3278 3 жыл бұрын
The idea of having points is to tell the decay in performance and they rarely suddenly fail unlike the newer solid state that keeps working until it suddenly doesn't. Next time try a needle nose instead of trying to pry anything off with a screwdriver. I love it no one got their hands dirty, I need to use a freaking scrapper just to find the mount bolt.

Good video. Tips: always clean new points with a little brake cleaner or something similar and a piece of card stock or thick paper. There’s oil on new points. Dialectic grease is not for metal to metal connections. It’s for the boots. Dielectric grease is an insulator that doesn’t conduct electricity.

I am using large screw driver to turn my flywheel to check the points gap and I know the rotation is counter clockwise but when I turn the flywheel to get TDC for #1 cylinder the flywheel/crank locks up and will not turn past that point near the TDC! Does this mean that there is an internal engine issue? The engine will still turn over using the starter. I appreciate any help or advice you may have. Thanks
