Pereira's whole gameplan was to take the fight to the later rounds, slow down Adesanya with legkicks, bodyshots and checks. Pereira knew going out headhunting from the getgo is not going to work. But when Adesanya's movement is compromised, and he's against the cage, then it was the time for Pereira to go for the kill.

@@hauntyoo yeah and no. I mean loads of people have had that plan against Izzy. Only constant is that those two men you mentioned both beat Izzy and are the same height. They at least weren’t on the wrong end of a 4+ reach disadvantage. Izzy’s defence is actually really sloppy from a fundamental POV. But it works perfectly against 99% of people he faces. It also forces them to eat 2 or 3 shots before they even get in range. Against someone who can respond immediately like Jan or Alex, Izzy gets scored on and looks diminutive.

I think Izzy really has to go in for the kill, he has nothing to lose, if Izzy wants to win he needs to be the one constantly pressuring Alex and maybe even take him to the ground and try to submit him. In the previous fights the one who was pressuring is the one winning the fight. You can see in their MMA fight that when Izzy was pressuring Alex he was winning until the last round where Alex was the one pressuring.

Can you imagine if he gets dominant position with time left in a round? That’s terrifying. How much technical defense can be accrued as it relates to grappling in 6 months? Enough to mitigate the power of Alex? I’m not so sure. But Izzy is not slouch in the punching department. Dan how much does it effect Alex getting rocked after the bell in round 1? Does he carry that into the fight you think to a point it’s noteworthy?

Great breakdown. I wonder, if Izzy needs to be perfect for 25 minutes because of the power of Pereira, could his best bet be a complete surprise - aim to take him out in the first round? Kill or be killed. Izzy has actually had some great success with right overhands and crosses in both kickboxing and MMA against Pereira, and he nearly finished him at the end of the first round last time.

I feel like all I hear people say about this fight is how much better Izzy is then Alex and that Alex just has too much power and too big. It’s crazy. How Izzy has to be perfect but Alex can do whatever. Izzy almost one shot Alex with one combo at the end of the first and Alex had to get up after one minute and come back with technique and solid striking. Izzy knocked out Brunson,Whittaker, and Costa. People don’t give Alex nearly enough credit for his skill IMO

When I see Pereira brought Yousri Belgaroui for this camp I can tell he is taking this very seriously. And now he has Glover focusing on helping him. That first fight he didn't finish before because of the punches from first round. that ate his pace and confidence for a while. Glover said he watched that punch hundreds of time. If Adesanya does not figure something very clever blending wresting and running away , he will be ko'd right early. just one good punch anywhere will bring the 3x0 ghost immediately

Pereira won the leg kick battle early on. Checked Izzy’s kicks well and landed his own with more power. every range on the feet is dangerous for Izzy if he stays there too long. If he doesn’t wrestle, I’m not sure I like his chances in this rematch.

The more I see this fight the more I think Alex is gonna win the next one too. Leg kicks? he checked most of them, his defense was nuts... Made Izzy fall with a check. Moving? Distance? Izzy was pushed back the whole fight. Wrestle? Sure Izzy had some moments but that's not his strength, he invested too much energy doing so and trying to take him down, Alex even got the first take down and stood up when he was down. Striking? Izzy was fast but couldn't keep the distance and felt EVERY damn bomb Alex threw, that's why he wanted to wrestle and clinch the whole time. Early stoppage? He was getting demolished with 14+ non aswerared punches. Plus it's the third time loosing to this guy, 2 by KO. What you gonna do next Izzy? 🤷🏽 💀

Congratulations to Veronica! Dan, great analysis, as always. I think you touched on the key issue with the fight (for Adesanya): the striking was relatively even throughout the fight. If Izzy wants to knock out Alex, or if Izzy wants to definitely beat him in points, then the striking needs to not be even. Izzy needs to make a lot more hits than Alex, because Alex only needs one good one.
