The highest 10 percent of water transportation workers earns nearly $120,000, while the lowest 10 percent earns around $27,000. Anybody that goes to Piney Point, choose either galley, deck or engine... BUT if you go deck or engine, dont stop at just being unlicensed, SIU has officer classes... You can become and officer (3rd mate or 3 assist. engineer) and work your way up to Captain or Chief Engineer. I went through SIU in 2003 and no one will tell you that you can become as officer... You can make upwards of 130k-180k per year as an officer on ATBs for 6 months of work only... FACTS

@Dani_TheUnicorn2 жыл бұрын
Yes! You have to take your classes over that expire like water survival, firefighting, etc., but you decide when you work once you’re part of the Union. Ideally, you need to ship at least 90 days of every year to keep your benefits and to be able to renew courses for free-otherwise you have to pay for the classes yourself-about $500 per course.

Dani_Love 12.....What is the average pay scale like. I don't need to know what YOU make exactly but IS there a kind of an average annual income that you can expect when you first start out and does that increase over time like any other job?....Or is it strictly based on what each shipping company pays per "ship out" And your job classification (cook, engineering or deck "classification")? And do you negotiate or bid on jobs and pay rates? It DOES seem to be an "interesting" lifestyle. Just curious.
@Dani_TheUnicorn5 жыл бұрын
Roger Buss non officer, $3k-$6k/ month roughly. Every ship/company has its own contract. Every contract has different pay. Officers make more, but they have degrees for this; $10k starting off roughly. The more you upgrade, the higher the pay. Most upgrades require a specific amount of sea time. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾

@@Dani_TheUnicorn Getting a bachelor's degree in marine transportation or marine engineering at a maritime academy is not free, unless you have a scholarship... Getting an education at a maritime academy is quite expensive. In fact, the chief mate on my last ship said he owed $100k in student loans for attending Cal Maritime. The cheapest academy though would be Texas A&M Galveston. Def the most affordable. Most expensive is Maine or Mass.

Did you go to actual college though? Or was it just the 3 month school? Because I want to be a officer straight away. And I know that if you do a 4 year period college you graduate with a offices license.
@denigma68rltw5 жыл бұрын
If you want to be an officer I recommend you go to one of the various Maritime schools.

Day Dreamer if you want to be an officer, go to a maritime college. I have a degree in business, but this isn’t like the military. You can have a degree and still have to start from the bottom unless you went to a maritime college. In the military you can have a BS and become an officer, but not as a MM.

@@Dani_TheUnicorn You ever had to Ship Out as a Wiper ? You need time in engine room to take the test for a QMED ?

@@johnsteelman1410 I shipped as a wiper when I was still entry level. My 4th phase I was a wiper. I accumulated enough sea time to Sit my my oiler test, next QMED. You need the required amount of sea time each time you upgrade or sit for a test for a higher rating.

Robert Drummond hey. Thanks for watching my video. I don’t know much about starting as a merchant Marine as a vet, but I do know that all the vets that started the program with me started from the bottom like me. I would probably contact the school or Coast Guard about it. I’m so sorry I didn’t have more information on that.

Dani_Love12 Thank you very much! I heard from other retired Merchant Marines recently about the process. I'm pretty excited about getting the process started. I'll be contacting the Coast Guard next week. You video is very informative.
