Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another reaction made possible by a PATREON with Daniel Balavoine and his song " Un enfant assis attend la pluie." A lyrically deep song with historical context, speaking about famine in Africa (hunger/drought etc.) These images are very real, but also Daniel never lets us down on his amazing executed vocals and instrumentation.

One one the most beautiful french song. In those french lyrics, we can see all the poetry used by Balavoine. There is alliteration and assonance of S, T and É to put the accent on the lack of water. Brilliant. And at the end, the sound of the guitar recalls the rain. Masterpiece.

I agree 100%!!! A text full of poetry, by its "written" structure, but whose "image" (the mood)... realistic.. ...Makes us think !!! His last song... 😞

My favorite phrase, musically as well as poetically is "fleuve de pierres de ses yeux lunaires, ses larmes sèches n'ont pas de prix". River of stones from his lunar eyes (meaning dry as the lunar surface). I think this is where even people who don't know French cry.

Hi Dereck. Thanks a lot for reacting to this song at last. From the same album, I strongly recommend you react to "PETIT HOMME MORT AU COMBAT" (= "little boy dead in combat") on children used and manipulated as brainwashed soldiers, sent to their certain death on the battlefield. Truly heartbreaking lyrics, but on a synth pop melody with oriental sounds and vibes. Another true masterpiece! Keep up the good work and take care, Dereck.

The better song of Balavoine ever ! And at 2:45 the most beautiful verse I've ever heard in my life : " l'enfant séché sur le sol d'Érythrée, les traits tirés, tire un trait, sur cette terre aride et ridée, dont il a hérité " in English it doesn't resonate as poetically as in French and you must know he built wells in Africa and he died in a helicopter crash for his cause in Africa...

The song doesn't end on a positive note. It ends with a wish for rain.. The grammar has the verb first in the sentence and that changes the meaning. "La pluie tombe" means "the rain is coming down". "Tombe la pluie" means "let it rain". I am so glad I never had to learn French as a second language.

It's humanity makes me cry when I see in 2022, we're still throwing bombs at each other for bits of territory to occupy, blowing our heads off for religions that can't even prove their "God" exists. Which, in any case, don't demonstrate its existence as they're intolerant of each other. We're now in times of war to have monopolies on people's lives while *"The beds are burning"* as *Midnight Oil sang so well* and that we should all join together and form a chain of solidarity to put out the fire that has taken place in our house. If ever you see a tear running down my cheek when I listen to this song, then it's a tear of rage. The human being is capable of such great things and so shabby at the same time without a doubt. It's pathetic because, given current events, it seems that we're still don't understand ... Daniel Balavoine the "Little Big Man", is a genius. That's all for today, folks.

Thank you for reacting to this song ! When you first paused, Daniel was about to deliver one of my favorite lines of the song, but I can see why you thought the verse was over right before that line. "Il me reste l'image de ce corps meurtri... qui pousse un cri" (Staying with me is the image of this bruised body, who lets out a cry) has incredible phonetic proximity to "qui creuse un puits" (who digs for a well) but of course this child cannot build a well where he lives, so all he can do is cry. It's this type of writing that makes the song so visceral and gut-wrenching, even if you don't know a word of French (or Amharic for that matter). The haunting guitar reminds me of the oud (Arabic lute type instrument) and although it comes from a different culture, it makes me hear the mountains and the desert, also prominent features of Ethiopia's geography. Last sentence of the chorus "tombe la pluie" would be better translated into "let/may the rain fall" I believe. And if the rain of the lyrics is only metaphorical, then Let Tears Be Shed instead, as you said. Joining other people here in encouraging you to react to Petit Homme Mort Au Combat from, yet again, this masterful album !

For those in the anglophone world who can "make the effort" to listen something else than English...Daniel Balavoine is one of the most talented artists we had in the late seventies until mid eighties when he sadly died in a helicopter "accident" the 14th of January 1986. Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Daniel Balavoine. This song "Un Enfant Assis Attend La Pluie" (A Child Sitting Waiting For The Rain) is a "non-single", a song from the album "Sauver L'Amour" (Save Love) the eighth and last studio album by Daniel Balavoine, released on October 14, 1985 (which will also be a commercial success, no.1 and gold disc) which closes this one at the 9th track. It evokes the tragic fate of a young Ethiopian faced with famine and drought in the summer of 1985. Everyone unfortunately knows that that year "Ethiopia is dying little by little" and many international singers unite to raise funds for humanitarian aid such as USA FOR AFRICA and Chanteurs Sans Frontières in France who sold more than one million maxi 45 RPM by collecting more than 10 million francs at the time. For the anecdote do you know that this song was played during his funeral in Biarritz (South-West of France) in January 1986. Thanks for your great job our Frenchie American pal. 👍🇫🇷

This is a great song from Daniel Balavoine but if you want to hear a mind-blowing version, I suggest you listen to the version by vocal magician Mare-Denise Pelletier from Montreal. She also covered Tous Les Cris Les SOS majestically.

hey dereck, i love your videos. I think you should react to Shirley Bassey, she is such an amazing singer and I am sure you will love it. She covers many songs and one of her best songs (which is also a cover) is I am what I am.

The end is not necessarily positive. We don't know if it's going to rain. He is summoning the rain to fall. 'Tombe ls pluie!" Rain, come down now! Lots of his songs hit you right where it hurts. For those whose heart is connected to their brain...
