It's also a song about lower class families as well as a song to pay tribute to his father. Boring job, boring life, no TV, no big holidays... but his father made sure the kids had food in their plates and a roof.

I am impressed as you understood this french song. About the tv , at that time, not all frenchs had tv at home. Daniel had , also, an incredible career. He did not learned how to sing, he simply sang. Some day , a showbusiness man listened to him, and then he became a famous french singer , singing popular french songs. I recommend you to listen his interpretation of a Edith Piaf song : "les amants d'un jour" or " je t'aime tu vois" that are French ultimative songs.♥️🥰👍

Little detail of translation : "l'été on allait voir la mer" is not "We went (in vacations) to the seaside". It is "We went and watch the sea". His family doesn't seem rich enough to go on hollidays. May be they live near by and just take a bus, their bikes or a walk to contemplate the sea. When I was a kid, our sunday family "sortie" was to walk to the airport to watch the planes take off .✈️

Merci Monsieur Guichard. Glad you shared this song with english-speaking audiences. An other great thing about Daniel Guichard is that he stayed away from show business and chose a sort of gipsy life, driving his motor home between concert places. He does not appear much on TV but has a loyal fanbase that will attend his concerts.

The fact is… he had to stop singing because he came in massive, and unjustified problems with the tax government office. He tried to prove himself innocent of the charges put against him, but in France you first have to pay then file a recourse. He could never pay and was prosecuted, was in a legal battle for 20 or 30 years, it cost him his career. All because one tax office employee did not want to admit she made a mistake.

I'm a woman, and it hits just the same. My father was both my Mum and my Dad, and larger than life to me, though his life was quite ordinary. He took me sailing . He let me watch when he was donating blood. On the summer I worked hard at a factory as a summer job, he even said "I'm proud of you, my son". He took me to his political activities. Everyday I wish I had spent more time with him when I could. And we did not have Tv in my family until 1971 or 1972, it was too expensive . Books were valued.

Don't worry, I will translate further. Merci. Actuelly, i'm not gonna translate this. "Beauf" means some how "red neck". I just say that Daniel Guichard as been treated like a "has-been" (we use this expression in french) for many years in our country. He travel in mobile-home, enjoy simple things (where have they gone ?) so... he never been considered like how he always been : a good guy.

@branlotin I don't think so. The right translation would be using an English slang to mean daddy in a tender but a bit distanced way.

Yes, slang for father, but it's outdated slang, that's not rude but a bit tender. Mes vieux = mes parents. That's more rarely said for the mother, because it doesn't sounds good "vieille". Mon vieux can also be used to say my friend, but that's not the case here

2:34 "Pas la télé" In my mother's village, my grand parents where the first ones to own a television. I was born in 83, and we only had 4 channels ! 😅 (and the first computer in 86) You understand a nice bit of french I see. And yes, this song is a tear-jerker first class.

(French here 😊), Daniel Guichard was a very famous singer during 70's, and this song particulary too, nostalgic one, about french education lower class model, the story about a family before the boom TV during 60's.This song is still a very popular old French song

Sad song because it makes us remember at that time it was harder but good things were double good and makes us renember the most important: say I love you to people you love, you will regret if you haven't done... I miss you dad and mom

Hi, When you heard the phrase "there was no TV in our house", you asked yourself: why are you Jewish?" No, that has nothing to do with it. In France, televisions came very late to modest homes. The French began to be interested in television at the time of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England. The French were in number in front of the TV sales stores to watch this coronation. I saw videos and it was impressive. France at the time was a country largely made up of workers and peasants. I come from this environment and I am very proud of it! In addition, TVs were extremely expensive. At my parents' house, the first TV arrived when I was twelve (I was born in 1959) and it was a second-hand TV. It took many years to be able to have a new color TV. I think my family wasn't the only one. And Daniel Guichard's family was simply not rich

@@itnow It's true that when the family wanted to watch a TV show they had to go to a relative's house. I remember that my parents and I went from time to time to my father's friend's house to watch TV and I remember a soap opera that scared me: BELFEGOR. And I was going to take refuge under the table. Today that has changed a lot because I love science fiction and “horror” films.

A great song which will be always current. The particular relation between a dad and his son. I lived it as millions of boys became men and older.... Merci Daniel and thanks D. in french "mon vieux" means for a boy his dad. It is familiar to speak about his dad after 14 years old, to the other, but not disrespectful.

Probably Daniel Guichard's most beautiful song. At his home, there was no television because, at the time, it was expensive. And he came from a modest working class. Don't miss these other songs "La tendresse", "Je t'aime tu vois", "Faut pas pleurer comme ça" and of course "Le gitan".

Mon vieux means in the 1950's french slang, simply Dad. Thé last explains, thé final word IS papa (Dad). I'm surprise to sée you interested in this song that remains m'y own father. It's a huge good song for me. Thanks a lot from France.
