Daniel Craig's iteration of Bond is the only one which showed James Bond's development as a human being and a character. From the brash, raw recruit in Casino Royale who was vulnerable and emotional and fell in love with Vesper and was hell bent on revenge through QoS, learning to leave his emotions behind, until they were stoked in through M's murder in Skyfall, was such a progression in character development. The people who couldn't take a 'crying James Bond' in Casino Royale just didn't understand that with Daniel Craig it wasn't carrying on where Pierce Brosnan left off. It was re-creating and building the character for a new generation, stripping away the flaws, the weaknesses, adding the charm, the humour, the arrogance and coldness, movie by movie, to ultimately become the typical Bond of yesteryear.

Good point, I think Daniel Craig’s bond was the closest thing to what Ian Fleming wrote about in his books. Constant internal conflict with his emotions and carrying out cold acts for his work showed really well in this iteration of James Bond. All the previous bonds kind of felt like he was an untouchable badass always saving the world.

What I adore about the Craig films is the fact that not only was he as tough as nails but with that, he was also really vulnerable. The betrayal he felt in Casino Royale when Eva Greene seemingly betrayed him but his face when M points out that she sold out to save his life. Plus clearly having the brain power to make lightening fast decisions. He has much more dimension than the earlier Bonds. Casino Royale is the best showing how he got started and that Parkour segment … amazing. But also Skyfall which traces his roots, gets the Aston Martin out of mothballs, includes Albert Finley in his last role as the trusty family retainer and Judi Dench’s death as M followed by Bond’s obvious upset as a result. … you can’t fault this! This interview was a really nice view of Craig’s take on his epoch as Bond.

It seemed to me that the Bond character was rather "cartoonish" even though as appealing as it may be, I think that Craig's great achievement was providing depth and humanity to the character and showing the audience that Bond is not a superhero who never gets hurt (both physically and emotionally), instead we've got a man who does the best he can with what he's got which is pretty much what most people do everyday regardless of betrayal, heartache and/or pain. Things that we all can relate to.
@ADAPTATION73 жыл бұрын
The pinnacle of cartoonish actually was during the Roger Moore era who never took himself too seriously in his role as James Bond. Even though I've lost interest over time in the franchise, I must admit that Craig gave a dramatic dimension to the character that was otherwise lacking in other movies.

They just copied the Jason Bourne formula because that was the formula that worked for audiences at the time (they even ripped off the editing and fast cuts from Bourne films and used the same technique is QoS) Let's not pretend they did something really special. They ripped off another franchise and made Bond a generic action hero. No gadgets, no larger than life villains, a super serious Bond. His Bond was no different from any other action hero like Liam Neeson in Taken for example. Just a guy running around with machineguns. Hope they'll reinvent Bond the PROPER way now instead of the Lazy way. Bye Daniel 👋

Just saw Casino Royale in the theater again last night. Brought back memories of watching the movie on release day back in 2006 in an almost empty theater. I remember how much flak Craig got post his selection as the next Bond; all major tabloids ran stories on how this was a terrible choice and a mistake (blond bond?), actresses refused to work in the film, etc. But I had faith in Daniel Craig, and when that iconic gunbarrel shot hit of him shooting one of his two kills to become a “double O” followed by You Know My Name (still my favorite Bond song), I was transfixed that day in the theater. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and I have seen it countless times, including last night (again, in an almost empty theater).

Not sure why there has to be a 'best' Bond. Connery had a great acting career outside the Bond movies, very charismatic man. Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, George Lazenby, Timoth Dalton also very good in their own eras. I'm missing one or two there? People have their own favourites and it'd be a sad world if we all agreed on everything. Just enjoy the movies for their escapism and magic.

I think "they" blew it. A LONG time ago they should have written a script where they brought back some of the former Bonds out of "retirement" to work with whomever the current Bond was and did a film where they were all chasing down several different "villains". They could have just said they were former agents and given them different numbers or if Bond number 7 is just handed down from a previous agent, they could have all been 007's. A good script and it could have made billions.

So like. The BIG picture. And. I think that's what Craig is talking about, but from a different point of view, BEing the actual actor who made Bond this HUGE deal in many people's lives who lost track of 007, during the Dalton and Brosnan 'phase.' 'Brooding' and 'Sissyish' didn't do it for me in the 90's.
