It’s incredible how you can just look at his face and see absolutely none of Daniel plainview. He truly is the greatest actor of all time

Ya he looks nothing like the characters he plays most of the time. My Left Foot, Gangs Of New York, There Will be Blood, Lincoln. He was more recognizable in In The Name Of The Father, The Boxer, The Ballard Of Jack and Rose and Phantom Thread.

There’s a very controlled intensity to the way both he and Daniel Plainview speak. (And work, actually.) But Day-Lewis is considerate and connects with the person he’s speaking to. Plainview is always inside himself and his ambition.

I can't believe I just saw this film... Son of a b*tch! This was both terrifying and _mesmerizing!_ I've been told again and again how awesome D.D. Lewis is, but I haven't really seen any of his movies-just an Oscar speech he once gave. But man, if you sit through this 2+ hour film, you'll realize what an incredible actor this guy is. It's like he's not even acting... Not a single false note, ever. Heath Ledger had nothing on him, but I must say, just as I got lost in Ledger's Joker character, I was similarly completely captivated and mystified by Lewis' character in this movie. ...unlike anything I've seen before. (I only mention Heath because D.D. Lewis also dedicated his Oscar in that speech to him.)

Has anyone seen MY LEFT FOOT, he is brilliant in that too, also IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER. He is so brilliant. You know that he looses himself in his role because in reality he is so different from the characters he plays. That what real acting is. Some American actors can learn from this.

What I loved about this movie the most was the fact that I come from an oil family, my grandfather is a wellsite supervisor from days gone by who looks like plainview, has his mannerisms, and who anytime I spend time with seems to exude this dangerous callous energy of white mans old world. I couldn't beleive how authentically tough, profoundly bigoted, and viciously realistic my grandfather was when I would go see him as a youngster. Day-Lewis made me feel that same way when I saw this movie. Masterful.

+TheExPresidentsAreSurfers I think either DDL or Matthew McConaughey should have played Hugh Glass in The Revenant. Leo was good, but those two actors would have done a lot better I think. Too bad he's too old now to play the Joker; he'd do amazing things with that role.

I find that there's a difference in skill set between being a "movie star" (like Cruise and Clooney are) and being a method/character actor of the highest caliber, like DDL (and Bale and Oldman). Movie stars are, in some capacity, always playing themselves, while the character actors almost disappear into their roles.

Have to agree with the majority. For such a complex character these questions were fairly simple. And for such a pivotal acting role, it would be nice to have more info about DDL's means, especially as he seems so willing to talk about it in this clip. I love how he refers to Plainview as "me" and "I", shows how much he actually became that guy. And from the sounds of it, he has had trouble letting go of the character.

I've seen some criticisms about this film and how they're saying it's a disgusting film. I don't get it. It's a like-for-like of how it was back then. I enjoy looknig into the history of the oil industry in American back in the late 1800s, and think it's spot on in the movie, espeically how DDL was acting. Cut-throat, ruthless, giving everything they had, not for themselves, but, for the success of their corporations. Brilliant and epic. My favourite actor, hands down.
