This is especially important for people with brain injuries to understand.

I'm on my second attempt at reading Emotional Intelligence. I dropped out of High School barely able to read or write aged 17. 30 years ago at age 31 I began to teach myself to read and write. Long story short three years ago I struggled to retain information from the book. So at page 61 I stopped and dove into reading non-fiction only; History, Memoirs, Biographies, Anatomy, Physiology, etc. I restarted EI from the beginning because although previously I highlighted a number of ideas I also missed a great deal; eg, amygdala hijack. Thank you and others for your study of the brain. It has made is easier for me to heal myself.

What if the threat is a test? To invoke a reaction? And the response is to use information as leverage for a counter attack? To prevent longer term harm or repeat of said initial intimidation or perceived betrayel

Well, my amygdala has been held hostage for ten years without one day relief. No wonder I can’t get anything done. I’m suddenly sad and scared. Will my brain ever go back to normal amygdala function again. I wonder why I am feeling sad and scared after learning of this. Hmmm

Your statement sounds hopeful in that you are willing to learn. That's how you get better over time. Edit: For instance, I have learned a lot about my own behavior by studying the behavior of others. By learning a lot about myself, my state of mind has improved by getting a better understanding of how my mind works.

Do you speak of high anxiety and regular surges of emotionally painful feelings? This may arise from neurological conditions such as ADHD that lessen executive function. Regardless, meditation is a verified path to gaining awareness of these amygdala attacks, and learning to manage them. Try a guided meditation by Ajahn Brahm, he's got lots on KZbin.

Take a look at brain retraining, Annie hopper DNRS or Gupta brain retraining, it will give you your life back, if you stick with it

Why can’t it be injected with something or surgically amended? I fly off the handle and I hate myself for it

I want to add that on my second read I found the cause of my struggle with the first read was not 'emotional intelligence' per se but rather the first four chapters were spent trying to legitimise emotion as a causation for determination against charges by the wider scientific community that only IQ can determine intelligence. The rest of the book went on to elucidate with proof why emotional intelligence is a tangible thing. Therefore the rest of the book was easy to read. However, having read it I found some of the information contained in it is now behind the times. Some of the information Daniel was espousing with regards to neurotransmitters has been up dated through research carried out for example by Dr Nim Tottenham, Ph.D.
