Life rolls on doesn't it? In recent news here in Julie's world, Daniel has started going back to a rehabilitation therapy program, they focus on neurological rehab, and they have great equipment. The owner is a great guy, and a good friend, and one of the most knowledgeable guys I know in regards to therapy and the brain.
Why? Why bring Daniel here? Because they are incredible, and they are helping him develop strength in order "re learn" how to take steps. Daniel "used" to walk in a very specialized walker. Then he had two hip surgeries, a femur break, and spinal surgery. Along with that were numerous hospital admissions for illnesses. So his "gait" ability is poor now. His right leg has developed a contracture and its a big concern.
As you will see in the video, they aggressively stretch him, and help him facilitate standing on his own. Then he goes up into a Light Gait, which is a harness that securely lifts him up and holds him in place so he can go to a treadmill and work on weight bearing and stretching.
We would never have stopped this therapy, but our insurance isn't covered there. So as a private pay it was just way too expensive. Recently, a private local foundation agreed to fund 3 months of therapy for Daniel. Which is totally amazing.
I have found along this journey, that the best programs, the best equipment, and the most hope for your child come from things that ARE NOT covered by insurance. The costs are astronomical. But you have to keep fighting.
THANK YOU for being a part of our journey. I love your comments and questions, and I'm so grateful for the thumbs up on the videos!!! Have an awesome day...

About my channel.......
My middle son, Daniel John Hasselberger was born on November 22, 1997, with a rare brain deformity called Polymicrogyria. The deformity happened due to a virus called CMV, or cytomegalovirus. He has seizures, respiratory problems, can only eat by g tube, is in a wheelchair, can not speak, and has had countless surgeries and hospitalizations over his 17 years. We are a family of 5 from Sandy Hook, CT and this is our journey.
Every day is full of new things that we don’t expect. I am Julie, Daniel’s Mom. I left my full time career as an HR Director 11 years ago because Daniel needed me. The struggle, the sacrifices, the sibling love, and miracle after miracle.
Why did I create this channel? For support, to help other families dealing with the same diagnosis, to help me cope with depression and isolation, etc. Please leave comments and help us grow and develop this channel. Life is incredible, and I want to share our story.

Go Daniel! It's amazing what they can rig up! I wouldn't mind going to see that therapist every week!! Julie, you should not have to make dinner on top of everything else you have to do. Take out is the way to go! I'm sorry Daniel got upset in the end. Have you ever tried giving him chewy toys? One of the boys in Beth's social group uses them.

That is awesome, Daniel was rocking them steps!! Love the music in the background :o) Keep up the good work Daniel.. I'll bet it feels good for him to stretch them bones. My kiddo does not bear weight on his legs since his last hip surgery year's ago but prior to that he was doing the gate walker in therapy.

That is awesome!!! My kiddo Chris used to tolerate it (Prone Stander) for a couple hours a day as well. Yikes!! I was trying to ward off anything internally (Crushed organ's or moving places where they should not be) going wrong with Chris because of his scoliosis. I had taken him for dental work at Loma Linda University and he ended up with a bad gum infection that seemed to take forever to get rid of. Just a bad experience there all the way around and they were not exactly quick to respond to treating him for what they had caused. So he lost allot of weight and while we were trying to fatten him up in preparation for his spinal fusion he aspirated. The gum infection had allot to do with his aspirating mainly because it caused us to cancel his spinal fusion surgery the first time, I'm talking month's of delay 7-8 Months).. I'll tell ya it was a wild roller coaster ride there for a while. So the surgery was scheduled for a later date and when we finally went to do the surgery another delay because they had found that his stomach had been pushed up into his chest so they had to figure out what they were going to do with that. It was crazy!!! But in the end once done very successful and he gained 4 inches in height. It was weird seeing him straight lol, I was used to his curvature and certain ways that he needed positioned etc...And no his surgery did not happen at Loma Linda... They are awesome with major stuff there but for my kiddo (Believe me I tried to have the faith) they just seemed to screw up everything for him. I think Daniel based on what I have seen so far will enjoy having his own walker. " femur fracture" I was wondering why he had his spinal fusion early... My kiddos Dr waited until his growth plates were maxed so he would not have to redo the surgery or better yet go in to adjust to new growth. My kiddo also had the tendon release surgery for his knee's and ankles as well but he had that years before the spinal fusion. I see Daniel is sporting a flat screen in his man cave.... My kiddo has taken over!!! (But don't they all) Chris has a flat screen in the family room that is his 99% of the time and I did get one for his room as well for the days he does not feel well. I plan on repainting his room though and already have the paint and all.. Just gotta get him jiggy with it so I can go in there and get busy painting and get his tv mounted as well. I am going to do like a western theme with rustic looking things. I found this picture of a horse sticking his head out of an old barn (Black and white) with a lantern that actually flickers. It is the coolest thing so far. and he was given by a rodeo guy some spurs a while back. So glad that Daniel is doing well and enjoying his therapy. He rocks!! Ya;ll have an awesome evening :o)

It's so good to see Daniel in therapy. Just an idea, but it may help to get Daniel one of those chew bands that people with severe autism have. They help to calm & comfort the person, redirecting them from self-injuring. I'm not from USA, but if you check out kgaccount here on KZbin, the son of the woman who does those videos has them & finds them really helpful (he uses some of them in some of the videos when he's stressed out), I'm sure she'd be able to let you know where to get one or two from over in the USA.

***** You may like kgaccount for her vlogs. Her son Jamie has severe autism, but he's awesome. Not long ago, he said something after being non-verbal all his life! I think he said "hi" or "bye" or something similar. They're a lovely family. she has a 2nd KZbin account too, I forget the name, but this is the one they're most active on. I don't know the exact name of the rubber bands, but they're like little rubber tubes & she'll be able to tell you what they're called & where to get them or your therapists will.
