The magician "ruining" the trick by casually preempting the end (like when he shows one hand at a time from beneath the handkerchief, supposedly _before_ he escapes) is probably my favorite magic trope. It's understated -- by acting casually about it, the magician doesn't draw attention to it and it _looks_ perfectly natural, but when you think about it, they _shouldn't_ even be _able_ to do it. It's like the magician saying "I know that you know that the trick can happen at any moment, so let's have fun with this." Danial executed this fantastically!
@arandombard11972 жыл бұрын
It's smart because we instinctively know that he can probably get out of those thumbcuffs, so by pre-empting it just before the reveal it throws us a curveball because we thought that it was going to be the final reveal. Now we're not sure what we should be looking for and we don't have enough time to speculate before he reveals the card around his two thumbs.

the deliberate showing of slipping his cuffs was a distraction so you wouldn't see him poking holes in the cards. putting the cards away and acting like he wouldn't do the card part because Allison "screwed it up" was also a distraction. he didn't pull out the same pack

Fred Darsow 1 second ago This is absolutely perfect. He was completely successful-- He says: "People forgive a mistake, but don't forgive when the show is boring." His quips are short, fast, and funny. Rarely do the magicians/comedians keep me engaged and laughing out loud; usually the jokes are not particularly funny. I actually don't really care if they fool Penn & Teller. The way he keeps his performance very kinetic, the tempo and delivery fast throughout the routine and how he warmly interacts with Alison & Manuel (even w/ Penn & Teller-- they are just sitting there aghast) helps him get a kinesthetic response of real enjoyment and amusement. For me, this is the best routine that I have seen on this show.

Danial! Omg. Great act! I used to do a similar comedy thumb cuffs routine in the early 90s. I went away from magic and during that time i lost all of my magic things. I was left with only a few trinkets and the magic in my heart. Today i am studying my way back into magic. Until i saw this, i had forgot how well the thumb cuffs played for the spectators. This routine brought tears to my eyes. They are there still as i write this. Thank you for existing. I am going to buy the thumb cuffs and add a card routine. So perfect i wish i would have thought about it. Please except my rendition of it as a compliment to you. Maybe i will get it up on youtube. Again. Thank you for existing.

What's crazy is that even for a guy like me who has no magic background, it's easy to see exactly how (or at least when) he did each part of the trick when watching it the 2nd time through. But it's just performed so well that it isn't very noticeable the first time through. Like there's really nothing complicated about the trick at all. It's 100% sold with personality and performance. It's cool to see P&T give such praise to such a simple trick. I have no doubt that they knew exactly how he forced the card on her, how he switched the things he needed to switch, and how he did the whole thing from a sleight of hand standpoint. I think the only thing they were supposedly unsure of was a little detail about the appearance of the box she was holding at the end. The magician wisely and cleverly made it look like it was open and full of cards but there was some doctoring that helped sell that.
@samantharynn96832 жыл бұрын
100% agree, as someone who regularly obsesses over the how-it's-done of P&T contestants, the praise Penn gives the trick and the fact that he gives no hints, no code, made it more fun to decipher even though it's a wonderful use of selling simplicity. The comedy he uses is perfectly placed as an amazing misdirection, and on the first watch you don't even really catch what's going on. Spoilers ahead. Lest ye' be disillusioned, turn back. I figured out it was a force the minute the trick ended, just because of the fact that retrieving the card at that point was basically impossible. False shuffle, waterfall, the works. The false premise of the cuffs was amazing, and lends perfectly to the storytelling. Getting the guy to choose Houdini was even a force, look again at the backdrop! The box is definitely doctored to look like it's full of cards, while the real box is dropped in a pocket when he turns. Cover the hands, cuff escape, prove the cuffs are still there (which is genius when you think about the misdirection, because a moment later he pockets them!) into the pocket with the key, hand it off, a little movement as he punches two holes into a card that he palmed from the same pocket (you can actually hear him do this because of the lapel mic, but it's a similar sound to the cuffs coming on and off so it's negligible.) the copy of the forced card, and voila! Perfect excecution and a beautiful trick. Since P&T do this all the time, it's understandable they figured it out. But my, was it an amazing performance! I can tell it left Penn stunned. It left everyone stunned! I, for one, can't wait to see more!
