This is such a hard form of magic: no talking, no bullshitting the audience. You have to perform the story when everyone's eyes are glued at what you do and the misdirection comes from the story itself, pulling people's attention away from what we think the character does and where the trick really is. (Which is especially hard because this is basically a very eaborate sleight of hand). Chapeau!

I've seen Stuart do this trick on Penn & Teller Fool Us. I've also seen it refined at the combined convention in Louisville, our Winter Carnival of Magic, and the IBM National Convention in Atlanta. Staurt has gotten better and refined his act. Too bad the fools at FISM thought they knew his trick and waled out without seeing his improvements! Keep on rocking Stuart! We love you! Cheers!

Every show is a testament to contestants hard work, Allisons wonderful personality and Penn and Tellers comments, always supportive, encouraging, and on occasion of being fooled, humility. Penn and Teller are real heros. We really need more people like them .

simple but amazing. here simply how it was all done. at 2:55 he took the stuff from behind the mirror and hid them under the cover in his hand, and then at 3:05 he returned them to the back of the mirror.

I think that’s the element they missed at 8:00. They knew a container was holding everything behind the mirror, but couldn’t explain why it wasn’t there when he showed the back the mirror.

It was behind the mirror under the covering, when it was removed it was used to disguise the hidden prop bag. min 2:55 - 2:58 is where the fabric is misshapen.

I'm not so sure about that. Yes, everyone knows that the things he pulled out from behind his mirror have been there beforehand, or he put it there at some point during the act. He was also careful to show the back of the mirror in the beginning, so we also see that he doesn't just have a big box there. But this kind of basic knowledge isn't enough to count as "busted", especially considering the amount of items involved which probably required some careful and probably ingenious management to keep it all invisible. And probably some gimmicks. Its not the first trick where Penn does an explanation stating that they "followed" him, and followed him, and followed him some more, but eventually they just gave up. I'm guessing that this is really the case here, basically an "overloading fool": he's been developing this performance for years, and while some of this certainly had to go into things like story as well, there's probably been a lot of development and experimentation to get each effect right. Penn&Teller would basically have to recreate at least the overall script of what he's developed in these years

​@@SyndurI agree, there's only so many different ways this could be physically done but Penn & Teller would have to answer for the whole continuum of props during the trick for it to count. They know a prop bag is involved, they know it's moving, do they know where all the props are? How would they fit? Are there props moving around? And ultimately they didn't come up with an answer during the performance. It's an extremely good trick I've only mostly figured out after watching this single recording 10 times over the years, Penn and Teller only had the original 6 minutes.

The trick is in the mirror. If you look closely you can tell that it's not a standard mirror. Its the one snow white witches had, that is way it duplicates things. Similar to a 3d printer, but from the 1600s. Good plot and trick any way to you and your ancient mirror...

He had a sack full of props hiding behind the mirror cover. He put the cover (with the sack of props in it) on his arm when he flipped the mirror around, then hung the sack back up after he righted the mirror.

It's not a mystery: they've explained several times they cut a single "episode" out of different days, so the guy would appear in different episodes that had parts from the same day. This is also the reason why within a season Alyson and P&T wear the same outfits (so that cutting parts from different recordings would work).

@@ecastag This was the first performance of the mirror illusion I invented in front of a live audience. There were other versions but this was the first stand alone mirror. It has since gone through many evolutions and is much improved.
