@Adam Zahavi i feel the concern of socializing kids coercively, but we already do that in a lot of places. We teach kids that they have to wear clothes and obey the rules and not take things that "don't belong to them" by telling them they're in trouble and giving them timeouts or denying them dinner or revoking their privileges until they agree not to transgress in those ways. Leaving out "some of us understand that we need to overthrow the ownership class as radically as monarchies were overthrown throughout most of the world, but in school they'll teach you everything is fine because schools teaching about these problems get in trouble" or whatever, feels like it's leaving out a huge component of the truth imo.

There is a line in there about low pay and high rent. also, from what I've read, the Bavarian Soviet Republic was at least partially built by anarchists. so I assume, though it was very short-lived, It was a very free place. The word 'soviet' just means 'council', it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the USSR or authoritarianism. I don't know too much about the german revolution, but they were fighting against the rise of fascism at the time and it involved many libertarian communists such as rosa Luxembourg. And finally, "No Gods, No Masters" is literally an anarchist phrase. This comment has everything to do with liberty.

@@Komotau4691 I don't understand how you could compare the Bavarian Soviet Republic, which threw out the king and brought democracy to Bavaria through a system of local worker councils, to Pol Pot, a ruthless dictator who killed people for being happy. also, this republic only lasted about a month, so we can only judge it by its ideas. it did not have a chance to prove itself before it was destroyed by the German army less than a month after it was established. if it had the chance to develop there is no doubt that it would have become a massively free and democratic society.

The problems of capitalism are not new, and have been about since it's inception. America is more capitalistic than most nations, and because of our plutocratic republic the only corrective legislation that gets past must offer profitable incentive. So naturally no really corrective measures are put into place until the public can't stand it anymore, and the plutocrats throw a few pennies to keep the masses happy. The problems then mutate and fester until our hedonism can't stand it anymore, and we have to be bought off again.

"mean Your means will have to justify your ends?" I don't take this line as a praise to a deaf and blind self-rightness. I take this philosophy as "All ends well when your means have justified your ends, but you could not have been sure of it at the start. The big right thing you needed to do was not rooted in legal calculations, it was rooted in a feeling that the slavery is at your door"
@icameherejusttocomment5505 жыл бұрын
The means justifying the ends is a phrase means that you must do the immediately good thing, at the risk of causing something bad later on. An example is the trolley problem, where you do not flick the switch as murder is wrong, even if your inaction leads to 4 more deaths than flicking the switch. In this context, it refers to people who do the immediately right thing, who follow the law because they consider it good, not thinking about the other consequences of their actions.
@TexasFriedCriminal2 жыл бұрын
Attend to the mode. The means you have restrict your options and not all means can lead to all ends. But you need to act, because freedom is a verb, an action and an urge, something that you make, something that you take, so your means, whichever you have, that allow you act towards freedom, to freedom (as a verb) are the means that will have to justify your ends. You don't get the perfect final state but by your action, your freedoming, it is justified anyhow.

"What was taken by force, cannot be taken back with anything except force." President Hafiz Al-Assad, chairman of the Syrian socialist Ba'ath party at the time.
@civility26442 жыл бұрын
The Ba'ath party are closer to Nazis than socialists. When they were getting started in the 30s they were the first ones to translate a whole lot of Nazi propaganda to Arabic and wrote to Hitler begging him to liberate them from the French. When he responded "I don't give a shit. Arabs need to take care of their own problems" they still kept translating and distributing Nazi literature and they never wrote to Stalin. When they finally took power they started pogroms, wrote laws requiring Jews to identify themselves and forbidding them to sell their property, hold government positions and leave the country. They purged the communist party and (briefly) went as far as federating with other Arab states which make no pretense at being socialist (Egypt and Iraq) to help contain their influence and pursue their ethnonationalist goal of an united Arab nation. During the cold war they sheltered fleeing Nazis including Alois Brunner, architect of the holocaust who personally oversaw the concentration of 100,000 jews, and who they gave a government job. After the cold war, with Bashar's ascendancy they've stayed the course, publishing new editions of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, supporting neo-nazis organisations throughout europe and the US even hosting David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the KKK and Unite The Right organiser for a state visit, awarding him medals on national television and broadcasting a rally he did claiming that Syria and the Arab People's struggle against Israeli occupation and the US Nazis fight against (((globalist capital))) were the same struggle. They have a state controlled economy, but their state is not accountable to the Syrian people, and when they did redistribution of wealth it was far more along ethnic lines than class ones (traditional arab tribal leaders with the full support of the Ba'athist party were aided in becoming a new bourgeois class), they seem to be genuinely anti-imperialist, if only because they're on the wrong side of imperial exploitation and politically opposed to the US but they're also ideological Nazis, extremely violent anti-semites, ethnonationalists and anticommunists. What the US & NATO have done to Syria is unjustifiable & unforgivable but Hafiz and Assad are not and never have been socialists, they're closer to Nazis and especially on one of David's video's it's a falsehood that should not be spread.
