I need to see this, although it seems to do that operatic sin of bringing all subtext to the surface.

Not sure why people hate this so much; the music in this excerpt sounds pretty good; I’m just not sure how it would sustain a whole opera

It took me so many tries to finally finish it because it was so fucking boring. I was so excited for it, but it just didn't work as an opera. It should have been a regular musical or just a play.

The only reason I found this is because I was hoping someone had made a musical out of it. The musical theater fandom would probably throw Tony awards at it if someone tried that.

I feel like I am specifically their target audience. I Enjoy atonal slow moving pieces with familiar story lines. But I also don't take people to the theater with me 😂 It's like the opposite end of the spectrum to Kinky Boots. Lol

If they wanted to be really brilliant, it could have been composed it in the style of American country-western music. The music these young men would known.

Scott Weaver, Alban Berg would have done a fantastic job. Although his music was atonal too but it always moved forward, it could be lyrical, funny, dramatic, moving when needed to be. It also followed the great tradition of Berg’s predecessors from Handel and Mozart to Wager and Verdi where the voices are always incorporated into an orchestral form and texture, no matter the style, and that’s why the music moves forward. In Wourinen’s case, the orchestra seems to interfere with flat and stagnant vocal lines, neither harmonic nor melodic movements.

The music has some sort of melodic line at the beginning, but then it disintegrates. Dramatically it works well, but the end of this except sounds as if Wuorinen was channeling Jerry Goldsmith's more complex style of composition from the 1960s (think "Planet of the Apes", folks!), rather than building on some of the melodic lines sung at the beginning of this except and dismantling them before our eyes...and ears and keeping some sort of tonal axis from within! This is not an opera for everyone's taste.

i just learned they made the novel/movie into an opera. opera is an old art form and i don t understand why modern composers want to put modernistic music to an old established art form. it doesn t work in my opinion. opera is based on harmonics of it age and rythmns like oompapa oompapa. what you have here is what they call a tone poem and i never could stand that sort of music.this is a love story a tragic one at that. but from listening to various excerpts their s nothing warm and fuzzy here.

dan marten opera has ALWAYS reflected the music of the time. To say that opera should stay in the 18th century compositional Style is immediately making opera irrelevant.

Lmao someone clearly knows nothing about opera. Opera in this style has a great historical precedent - see Britten, Maxwell Davies, Strauss and most of all Berg.

It is an "interesting" theme/ drama but, once again, new made music that never will survive. Sad!

NO. It might as well be some twelve tone experiment Berg or Webern tossed in the fire. The opera was written After the short story, After the film adaptation, and yet captures none of its predecessors pathos, mood, or poignancy, regardless of Proulx's libretto. It feels like some SNL sketch about an atonal composer adapting a Western for the stage. And it is not funny. Read the short story. Watch the film. Stop making musicals out of everything. And don't make an opera out of This one. Oh. Too late...

Do you think that the music didn’t grow from the story? Do you think you can just slap onto another narrative? It’s a pretty great story.
