From Daniel himself on part of the reason he wrote the song: "But there’s an obvious spirituality there, an attempt to call out to a spiritual presence but from my point of view, from the point of view of someone that isn’t religious and doesn’t believe in a god. It might sound hokey and/or pretentious to some people, but to me the most valuable aspect of making music is the way that it creates something like a spiritual experience, and for a nonbeliever like myself it’s one of the only ways to get there." This rings very true, not many things give me the comfort that those who are religious have but songs like this definitely help, they give you some sort of strange faith, warmth, saftey.

Heart wrenching. This song is like experiencing death and waking up on the other side cleansed of all of the weight and burdens of this world....or the catharsis of grieving for a friend's death and being visited by them in a dream where they tell you that they are ok. It's so heavy and sad and yet freeing. Really quite a remarkable piece.

My mom died a few weeks ago and this song makes me feel closer to her in some way, art is such a crazy thing, Daniel wrote this song in some moment of his life and now I find hope in his words and melody, long life to art, expression and love.

I want to thank you for what you’ve given us, I selfishly hope you make more, but whatever it is that you do I hope you find joy in it the same way we find joy in your music. all the best to you and your loved ones. This song always gets me. I love the quiet elegy in the arrangement of horns and piano. I'm reminded of David Shire's score to All The President's Men. Similar in feel and a beautiful use of horns so different from the expected bright, punchy bombast.

Make more solo music Dan. Everyone in the know, knows your the main creative force behind Grizzly Bear. Hell, almost all the songs on Painted Ruins were yours. You're one of those people that always has original songs going through your head i bet... for me, its when I'm driving, they just come storming in, I think its the rhythm of motion. However you do it, however it comes to you, keep going. I mean there's no one else like you man. In a sense you're like Thom, Trent, Nick Drake, Cobain, Cornell, Anne Brun, E Smith, Jose Gonzalez.. it comes out so naturally because you really live it.. and its a nearly endless well, its just the older you get the more unsure that its any good anymore. It sounds like 'me' too much. Maybe its different for you.. but simple grooves are harder to create than the multiple triplet triad arpeggio stuff. Those riffs and melodies dissappear of not used or recorded, or you lose the original structure, you want your catalogue to be quality, each installment. No, "good enoughs" and they stay in the clouds, on a guitar hanger. Well give us more you please! Your catalogue is not big enough yet imo, I'm talking solo work. DoE and Silent Hour are amazing.. but I want to grow old with like 7 amazing Daniel Rossen solo albums, or collaborations outside of GB. So if you can get on that it'd be appreciated. Your art just hits differently. Your lyrics are so honest it makes so many other artist seem like they're trying to hard. Its a dark cloud that you're not sure why its even there. For many people things are okay. Yet it remains. Childhood memories painted down and up and down. Topsy turvey. Then you realize half your life's gone by and the shade fills more and more of your day every year that passes. Yet its how certain artwork is created, by us unwillingly masochistic writers, you don't want to be down, but you also know its where the power lies dormant. And ironically enough it gives you powers, if you use forms to express it. I never want to let it go, id like 60/40%, happiness, and the blue, the mute expression what should be laughter. Music and art are all I really love about existence. If I need to tap in and not ignore my problems.. learning its lessons, forever, so be it. As long as I can speak its language. That's why I hold Rossen in such high regard. You're one of the best translators I've ever heard, it is something, different. Like you're an antenna for all of everything, eveyone, for a few minutes. Yet its very earthbound, wooden, always echoing out the forest. Timeless. Even if you don't realize it. You neeed to make some more fkin music already. Love ya 😘
