When actor Daniel Sharman (Teen Wolf, The Originals, Medici: The Magnificent) and music producer Christian “Leggy” Langdon visited Dr. Daniel Amen as part of the Scan My Brain series, they had a lot of questions. They wanted to find out what brain scans could reveal about Sharman’s feelings of depression and Langdon’s anxiety. The co-hosts of The 2 Lads Podcast, which explores what it means today to be men, had one other burning question for Dr. Amen: “Do you see a difference between the female brain and the male brain.”
The short answer is YES.
In one of the largest functional brain imaging studies ever, Amen Clinics compared the brain SPECT scans of 46,034 female and male brains. SPECT is a brain imaging technology that looks at blood flow and activity patterns. This study, which appeared in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, revealed fascinating differences between female and male brains.

I really enjoyed watching Daniel's visit with Dr Amen. I was a little worried about what Daniel said about a deep trauma to go back to when acting, his morning depression, and the 3 concussions that he had playing soccer. I love Daniel's dark roles such as Lorenzo de Medici, but I hope those roles didn't make him more depressed in real life since they require so much emotional investment. Luckily, it sounds like his depression is potentially improving since he is learning to control it better. I'm a huge fan of his and I really really want him to be happy. I'm so glad he's seeking professional help.

Love Daniel. This was a great session with a lot of helpful insight and information. Had a feeling this was true but was unsure and always got conflicting information about gender differences between male and female brains. These studies should be used to promote more female leadership. It's also supirisng how family/ historical trauma plays a role in mental health "Gene's aren't a death sentence- they're a wake up call."

What’s so great about being a leader? If everyone was a leader, who would follow? Unrealistic Feminist expectations for women can cause low self esteem. Leave the girls alone and let them make their own decisions.

I'm genuinely fascinated by this, always loved looking into the brain. Explains a lot of my certifications, being a caretaker. You both are very relatable and understandable. I hope that things get better mentally and physically. I hope you two lads comeback on KZbin. Its been a pleasure to watch both videos. I'm still interested in seeing more neuroscience. I don't mean ro creep 😅 anyone out, I have my certification and always been intrigued towards addiction. So this is very educational to me.

Interesting video, and I really admire the 2 lads opening up like that. I have a question though... When the Doc says male and female brains are so different it looks like a different species, how much of this is nature and how much is nurture. The pressure for boys in our society to behave a certain way, to be less nurturing and emotionsl, even when not encouraged by the parents is so overwhelming in our society that no child can go through life without encountering this. School, family, friends, television, strangers, everything in our society confirms these gender roles, and there is virtually no escape from them. We know from orphanage children in third world countries that a lack of stimulus at a certain age leave holes in the brain that cant be refilled, so have you considered this when coming to your theory
@paulstuart9948
@paulstuart9948 2 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but just to add a thought--I don't think this is his theory much at all--this has been claimed for a very long time--for one thing simply that the left/right brain is integrated in females, in males it is "disintegrated"--in early development the connection becomes broken, or separated. This enables women to use the left and right together more efficiently unlike males, and which is probably behind intuitive thinking. About societal pressure-- studies have shown differences in very young children--trying to get little boys to play with dolls doesn't work, or trying to get little girls to smash up trucks. Also--is it "our society", or is it quite universal--seems pretty universal and therefore wouldn't it be way too coincidental for societies everywhere to have so much in common?

The big question is: are the differences in female vs. male brains really caused by their gender/genetics or are they caused by the environment, the way they get treated differently starting even before birth?
@lucyrwk6416

I think it's a bit of both There's a whole debate about nature vs. Nurture and in the end both effect our brain Hormones play a big role in the function of the brain, so that's definitely affected by gender But our environment also influences it

If it was nurture, then surely there would be more women leaders, where they would develop these abilities. Instead this shows that women have the innate talent and potential, but it is not being realised.

It's not too much of a puzzle since women have to bring another life into this world. Our brains has to be stronger. Also women have more genes than men...we have to because it takes more to birth a life.

The real question is what is the difference between a male child and female child brains. Does this change happen gradually as society pushes expectations on the child? What if you scanned adults who ok grew up in a more equitable society where men and women weren't raised in such a patriarchal world? So is it nature or nuture?

I have often wondered if there are differences in the brain scans of heterosexual females and transgender women, even when the transgender women are receiving supplemental estrogen. The same goes for heterosexual men vs transgender men receiving supplemental testosterone.

@probablynot1368
@probablynot1368 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikkid9670 Thanks for the information. This old fart needed some education. So then, my understanding is that (1) cisgender is person whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth, for example female and woman; and (2) transgender are those who are not cisgender, or people whose gender identity doesn't match the sex that they were assigned at birth; and (3) transsexual is a term sometimes used to describe people who use medical treatments, such as hormone medicine or surgery, to make their bodies match their gender identity. Katelyn Jenner is an example of this medical treatment. I understand the transgender community prefers to use the umbrella term ‘transgender’, rather than transsexual, because of its history and roots in the professional fields of medicine and psychology, which used this term to incorrectly label all transgender people as mentally ill or sexually deviant. I would still like to see the differences/similarities in the brain scans of cisgender women, transgender women and lesbians. Also the differences/similarities in the brain scans of cisgender men, transgender men, and gays. Please don’t slam me for using the terms lesbian and gay, even though I’ve just thrown in sexuality vs gender here. We already know there are differences in the scans of cisgender women and cisgender men. I believe the scans will support ‘nature vs nurture’.

Estrogen is actually the hormone that increases agression, check high estrogen symptoms online. The only reason why testosterone increases agression is because of it being aromatized into estrogen in the brain. Men tend to have more estrogen in the brain, they tend to produce more estrogen in general, the only difference is that men have more androgens to counter balance then women and men's liver upregulates the glucuronidation of estrogen more so than women. Reduce the aromatization of testosterone, ie reduce feminization of men, and you will have a less agressive and more calm group of men
@titaa56
@titaa56 3 ай бұрын
With your logic, that means males are literally females if they make much more estrogen than females themselves. Also, this is the very reason androgens exists. So that makes would remain males otherwise, we'd all be females. Estrogen does not make one more aggressive than testosterone. You are spreading misinformation. If that was indeed true, prisons would be swamped with females but interestingly, males dominate prisons and are the main ones causing wars. Testosterone is an aggressive hormone. And it literally limits a man's lifespan while estrogen increases the woman's lifespan and is another main reason why females outlive males all over the world, even in the animal kingdom. Please, do yourself a favor and do better research. Your comment is extremely flawed and false.
