When you mixed Amazonite with Turquoise PB28, I was looking on the color chart for Daniel Smith and Cobalt Blue is PB28 but I couldn't find any other that was just that pigment. So was it a Daniel Smith color you mixed with Amazonite? Just curious. Trying to learn about what to mix with what to get colors that appeal to me.

@InLiquidColor 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that! I went in depth about that mixture for my American Journey porcelain palette video and must have glazed over it here. I mixed Turner's Turquoise PB28 with Daniel Smith's Amazonite. I have since been able to try MGrahams Cobalt Teal and prefer that to my mixture so I will likely be replacing my mixture with the single pigment when it runs out. The mixture I made is lovely in hue, but it muddies very easily in application. The Cobalt Teal from MGraham on the other hand mixes beautifully and has lower granulation that DS's version, which I don't like as much. Hope that helps!

I feel like the only one who loved granulation from the beginning and actually is what drew me into the realm of watercolour lol also I basically dove straight into Daniel Smith, not caring if I was going to like it or not.

I played with Prang,Artists Loft, w/c pencils and marker for 4 years. Once I realized that w/c paints was my medium of choice I bought 9tubes of Mission Gold, this helped me learn how to mix colours , play with values and what I want out of my paints. Then I played with a DS dot card. I am absolutely in love with DS. They are magical, they do exactly what I want out of my art and paint by themselves even on my rather iffy Cannon mixed media sketchbook.i will visit their shop....one day. 🙏🏽 peace justice and healing.

YES, DANIEL SMITH!!! As a Seattle native (now living in NYC), I just love that they're my hometown brand! Also, holy crap is it fantastic paint. (I have specifically avoided acquiring the full dot card because of the danger I know is lurking there......)

I remember when Daniel Smith first started up - making printing inks out of his garage off Nickerson St. in Seattle. The main D. Smith store out past SODO is an artist's dream. I really, really miss the D.S. catalogs - so very well done, wonderful artist tips and techniques. They also have great demonstrations and classes. If I can ever get on I-5 again (what a nightmare!) I will make my way up to the main store for a dangerous visit.

I trust your knowledge and recommendations so much that when I am ready to build my palette, I will literally just go to your Studio palette video and write down all of the shades lol. I wouldn't do this with any other youtuber but I fully trust your picks and I know how obsessive you are about only picking the best colors :) plus I paint similar subjects. I do have some winsor newton colors so I won't duplicate pigments. But I do want to supplement my collection with daniel smith earth tones. So far I mainly just have a cool and a warm red, five yellows, six blues, sap green, diox purple, viridian, pthalo green BS. I just grabbed the best colors I could find from hobby lobby and skipped the earth tones since you said they aren't that great. Than for all you do!

This was a super helpful video for me. I have been in talks with a Dan Smith representative and have been testing out some samples I received. With my first practice with them I found that I really hated the granulation but I'm really open to trying them again and learning how to use them well. My go-to right now is my Sakura Koi travel set of watercolors as they lay down smooth and are quite bright :)

Jennifer Charlee I'm glad it was helpful!! I'd be more than happy to show off my collection during that art date haha. I'm not a huge fan of the super granulating paint but they have plenty of other options for non granulating paint too :) if you don't like DS though but like bright colors, I'd highly recommend looking at the a Mission Gold set. They're a huge step up from Kois if you want to make that jump and largely discounted if you get them the sets (vs individual tubes). I'll actually have a fist impressions video up tomorrow for one of the sets!

Oh great! I have heard great things about the mission gold brand so I'll have to try them out when I'm ready to upgrade. I'm excited for that first impressions video. I would love to see your collection in person as I know the camera can only do so much when showing color and texture or paints. You did a fantastic job showing the granulation from what I can see though 💕

This video came out literally a DAY after I bought twelve tubes of Daniel Smith paint - I kicked myself so hard when I was notified! I had been researching for weeks and would have loved to take your opinion into account, as your suggestions and colour knowledge seem so spot on. I'm composing a set of "essential" colours for myself and a few other friends who are interested in watercolouring but can't afford/access the high end stuff yet (it's a secret ;D gift palettes!) But all that bad timing aside, thank you for the informative video! Glad at least that phthalo green is present, I loveeee.

In Liquid Color No need to apologise! Not your fault at all :) initially I was going to just use the DS Essentials + burnt sienna and raw umber because even I'm still a newbie to the world of watercolours, but then I was sent a dot sampler of Jane Blundell colours and... kinda fell in love with Quinacridone Gold, Indanthrone Blue and Sap Green. I ended up getting Hansa Yellow Medium, Quin Gold (still not sure if it was a mistake getting this rather than New Gamboge, but I was stupidly infatuated), Quin Rose, Pyrrol Scarlet, Pyrrol Crimson (one of my friends draws a lot of horror, so), Ultramarine, Phthalo Blue (GS), Indanthrone Blue, Phthalo Green (BS), Sap Green, Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber. I'm itching to get Yellow Ochre because I've always loved the colour but my research recommended to skip it - so when you mentioned the Daniel Smith one was nice, it lit that flame again. My wallet is screaming at me though so maybe not, lol. I also got each of them a Rosemary and Co pocket brush :) it's turning out to be a very expensive venture that I've been planning since early Feb, but I'm glad at least that what they do get will be high quality, despite my half-pan filling technique being shonky at best. LOL

I find Quin Gold much more useful than New Gamboge. Indanthrone Blue from DS is so gorgeous. It's strong and bossy but so evocative. I also really love DS's Raw Umber which is practically a Sepia.

You give very good details about paints and their characteristics in your videos, I like that very much I will have to look around a little more to see if you perhaps give better selections or choices for a 24 pan or 48 pan pallet? I have the dot cards from Daniel Smith as well as the da Vinci samples, although Dan Smith‘s dot card is older as I did look into them before buying mission gold watercolors. I went with the Korean company because the people in Seattle were jerks, maybe someone was just having a bad day, but it affected my purchase. Another reason why I still shy away from Dan Smith line of paints.

Since transoxide brown granulates so well, it's a prime target for me to buy. I love the effect. One can make a granulating color go on smoothly, but it's hard to get a non-granulating color to granulate. DS provides paints that will allow an artist to have and mix both kinds.

I've been researching limited palettes to re-start doing landscapes and marine-scapes, so definitely the blues and greens are of interest. Rather than a traditional split warm-cool primaries palette, I saw an interesting limited palette of warm and cool balanced RGB+CMY+Neutral Tint, Yellow Ochre and a Sienna/Umber. He recommended both Phthalos to avoid the granulation of the Ultramarines and the convenience greens and blues. Now I just have to choose between M.Graham and Daniel Smith. 1. Buy Quality Paints. 2. and Quality Brushes. 3. then Paper...

My first real watercolour set were the Academie colours from Schmincke and Schmincke still is ma favourite brand. I guess it might have something to do with what brand we start with. It`s the one I`m moste used to and I also have easy access to the brand in local stores. And for the granulation, I also didn`t like it in the beginning but now I really love it for certain effects, especially in landscape paintings. I think I would use the Buff Titanium for clouds.

Thank you for the review. I also like their paints, my only gripe about the company is that it is nearly impossible to get a hold of them. The 1-800 # they use to have is no longer active as per vm on the number and the email address for customer service is never answered. I sent them an email regarding Smalt and it has been 2+ months now with no reply, not even acknowldgement of email receipt! Very bad customer service when you can reach pretty much any other watercolor manufacturer overseas!! Maybe thete are too busy making watercolor. Who knows!! Maybe they are great and reachable to "famous" artists, but the general artist, who btw are the ones that keep them in business (!), customer service is MIA !

I do agree here. I love their product, but in my experience and from what I've heard, their customer service is very lacking. There are some colors from them I can't live without, but I also try to support smaller local (to me) companies with great customer service, like MGraham and DaVinci.

Denise! This was an amazing video! Thank you for doing all the research for us! haha! Besides the Intro sets on Amazon, what's the best way to purchase D.S? It would be fun if they had more sets, but looks like just have to buy per tube? Thank you again!

Thanks so much Tiffany! I wish they had more sets too, though they do have a couple artist inspired ones. Of course the Amazon links help out this channel and you can get individual tubes with the drop down menu on the link in the description, but they're cheaper on DickBlick or JerrysArtarama, which I totally understand if you want/need to order from one of them :) My local specialty art store also carries most of their colors but they're a bit more expensive there too of course.

That's so kind of you Tiffany! Thank you so much 💜 until very recently viewers could make one time donations through the KZbin support button but that feature has been removed as of the end of February. I would hope they will replace it in the future but I have no idea what they're planning on. In the meantime if you regularly shop on Amazon, any purchases after using my link (it doesn't matter what it is, it doesn't even have to be art supplies) donates a small percentage to the channel which is always appreciated. However I know that can be a hassle to have to go through my site when ordering! Letting the ads run before my videos also helps me generate a little bit of revenue as well if they're not skipped. Regardless, just knowing how much you appreciate the content means a lot :) Thank you so much for being here and I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel!!

maybe it’s true that our first paints usually what we love most, i dont know, daniel smith is obviously a much higher quality than white nights, but white nights just have lots of hues that i got used to and preferred more than daniel smith’s versions (ex. yellow ochre, burnt umber, russian green- PG8, raw umber... although their pigments werent very strong compared to DS) but ofc it’s more of just the hues not really the performance, but performance wise daniel smith it is!

I do love the green apatite but agree with Marissa that I definitely don'y care for all of the Primateks (especially don't care for the tiger's eye and hematite colors). Some of them have REALLY cool sparkle like the amethyst and fuschite but I'm not sure how often I'd use them. My favorite Primatek is the green apatite. It's really useful. Favorite color overall is much harder. Just pure color alone, I think phthalo turquoise but my most used are probably burnt umber, burnt sienna, and ultramarine. The other ones I'm obsessed with from my dot chart that I don't own are perylene violet, perylene maroon, naphthmide maroon, raw umber violet, permanent brown (I wish I had gotten this instead of the transparent brown oxide) and jadeite genuine. I'd love to try those ones out!
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 7 жыл бұрын
The more I think about it too, I think when my Rose of Ultra is gone, I'll replace with the the perylene violet in that well, then add the raw umber violet or perylene maroon to my darks in place of what's currently perylene violet.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry I didn't have this information for you. I don't do much lifting so I don't think to do them in reviews oftne, and it will vary a lot by color. I can assure you the non-staining colors lift wonderfully, and every color is well labeled. Just like any staining color, phthalos and the like are more difficult.

I haven't used any D.S. paint so your vid was good fun. A range of 250 or so colours seems like madness to me - off putting. I fight to keep it down to about 12 colours - with some spot colours. Colour is only one factor, the unique properties of a specific tube of paint is an important factor.Being able to cut though to clean white ( non staining colours) is also a vital trait. Well done with your demo. Not so easy to highlight the USP of a particular tube of paint. You should try doing a gold panning movement or tapping the paper when you demo the granulating paints - it will really pop the granulation. You did good.Ta.

On your swatch cards, what does the darkened stripe of color on the right hand side represent? Is there a reason why some have it and some don't?

I used to just do the graded wash on the cards, but then later decided that I wanted to see the glazing for each branch as well. The stripe is just a second layer of paint but I didn't want to go back to do ALL of them at once. I'm doing them as they come up in reviews and whatnot :)

Thank you so much! I have a set of Cotmans as well and while certain colors are okay (like "intense blue" which is phthalo blue) others like the burnt sienna are sooooo underwhelming. If there's anyway to get your hands on some Van Goghs, I highly recommend them over the Cotmans. They're so much easier to work with and more vibrant but still student grade so you're not forking out the big bucks. Otherwise, the 6 color introductory set of Daniel Smiths are great and only about $22 USD on Amazon :)

Good to know that they don’t have true cadmiums. I‘ll read up on them while commenting here and I am glad that DS apparently has a really good cad substitutes, even more opaque than true cadmium. Thb I didn’t even know that they apparently got banned in the eu in 2014. I was convinced Schmincke had the original cadmiums (since they DO have genuine cadmium pigments) but I am not so sure anymore. Does anyone know that?? I’d love to see the difference of genuine cadmium vs DS cadmium hues by myself.

Yes found the name. And Lord have Mercy on my wallet: But they don't come in a 5 mill tube: well never mind I will make me a jane blundell traveler pallet of 6 colors and since I use brown a LOT in just about any mix I make and on it's own it won't go to waste :P I think it's a pitty DS doesn't come in Pans btw I Hope they will change that sometime soon...I usually hate to fiddle with tubes, but lucky for me my review pallet of 24 full pans is not on my top list, so I will use their pans...last time i will do a home brand review, as much as I love them for sending me their wicked pallet ( that I WILL use,lol ) after steppingup to artist paints,most homebrands feel like sanding paper on my wc paper,lol. Oh and I think I will go for mayan blue deep since it is closest to the turner's mayan blue

I just got a new watercolor palette from St Petersburg (yay) I don't like opaque colors, but unfortunately it has 3 cadmiums:( Two of them are yellow so my mixed greens are so opaque! And the warm red they put in is also cadmium so my other mixed colors will be opaque, disappointed.

I got my first DS last Saturday as the 5mls went on sale on my fave store. Its Viridian - as I'm looking to add another single pigment green on my pallet. Still neutral to it i more keen to use it in making grays. I would still purchase a couple more color from DS when they are on sale because expensive XD. Oh My fave red is PR176 from Mijello- i really like it - i made sure I have enough of it. Any DS color do you think i should try? I like things that vibrant. :) thanks.

If you like vibrant I'd definitely recommend the phthalo green over viridian. Also if you let your paints dry, be sure to mix in some glycerin or honey. Viridian dries really hard. I'd hate for you to think all DS colors are that way ;) are you looking for granulating pigments or just regular color recommendations? Any particular color family? There are so many to choose from!

I do mostly portraits too and I am thinking that I will buy some quin orange light or some Schminke light vermillion if I can find it, mostly for mixing and lip and eye accents.

Can you say the differences in m graham, schminke, and Daniel smith. Why you prefer daniel smith? I can’t afford to try them all😢

+Stephanie Alexander that's why I have detailed reviews on all of them! :) I'm must better at visually explaining things than writing them out so please take a look at the other videos for a better account. In short, Schmincke is soft while MGraham is super vibrant. DS is most textural.

I'm all for surprises with my watercolors so I love the ones that spread like mad (QoR for example) and the heavy granulating ones. I assume you've seen DS's Cascade Green? It's a-freaking-mazing. (Again that's the opinion of someone who adores the wild side of watercolors.) By chance would you know how one could mix their own cascade green?
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 7 жыл бұрын
I have it on my dot chart but have not painted with it. Cascade Green is listed as using PBr7 (I believe Raw Sienna) and PB15 (phthalo blue, though I'm not sure which one). I'll go try it out but Lezley did a video on this and other specialty colors if you want to check it out! :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKvOY4itm8-BopY

I don't really like to buy green except green gold because you can mix green yourself and I prefer quinacridone red which is weaker that permanent alizarin crimson and if you add a smidgen of french ultramarine to quin red, you get alizarin crimson.

Tanks Nelson! I do find phthalo green blue shade to be indispensable as you cannot mix that intensity from other pigments and it mixes gorgeously, but I totally understand about not wanting convenience greens taking up space.i do love quinacridone red as well!

In Liquid Color well it depends on the artist. for me, I love painting landscape so using green from tubes will make the painting flat. usually natural green more dull, not very intense and have several value from light(usually yellow) to mid tone(green) to dark (blue). mix green and make a color stream thinggy from yellow to blue and you have the 3 shades. this can avoid awkward transaction from yellow to blue. but phthalo green blue shade is an interesting color and could be used with various type of painting I believe.

I agree! Phthalo green and blue are both super useful for blacks. I just hit the publish button on a mixing blacks video using both :) In addition to convenience greens and a primatek or two, it definitely has a place on my palette.

I just purchased the Daniel Smith essentials set antispammer@earthling.net the Primatek set . I've been a Winsor & Newton user from the beginning so this is all very new to me . I've spent the last two days making color swatch charts , hoping to become better acquainted with these vibrant paints . Thanks for sharing your wisdom with me 😆 .

How do you like DS compared to your W&N?
@BornAgainFarmGirl
@BornAgainFarmGirl 5 ай бұрын
@@vanessacastagnoli1126 Thanks for asking , both companies I usually will buy tube watercolor, paints and comparing the two is very hard to do because they both have extraordinary qualities and it’s hard to differentiate the worth of each. There’s no one that’s better than the other they’re just different. For example, Windsor n Newton Pain gray has qualities that the Daniel Smith pains (sp?) gray does not have, and secondly, the Windsor in Newton lemon, yellow mixes uniquely with various other Windsor Newton pigments that cannot be mixed using the Daniel Smith. But even still the Schmincke brand watercolor paints have the most beautiful Indigo that I have ever worked with .

I do a lot of urban sketching and building illustration in Europe and find buff titanium and gothite (did I spell that one right) useful for the buildings here. But not all that useful for other paintings, though some have said that buff titanium can make a decent flesh mix. I love Daniel Smith best too but hesitate recommending it to people here in the UK because it is much harder to find and more expensive here than other brands.
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 7 жыл бұрын
I can totally understand that! It's like Schmincke here in the states, or even Winsor & Newton is more expensive than Daniel Smith. Thanks for the thoughts on buff titanium! I could imagine it being lovely for older buildings.

Also, I have found that most european companies miss the mark on browns. I am not thrilled with Sennelier and WN browns either. Schmincke came out with some new earth tones that I like, but they're not very dark. I have a Mixing Video on Browns though if you haven't seen it yet :)
