Screenwriter Daniel Waters talks to Manuela about Kristen Stewart - how her performance style subverts genres and gives the most fantastical scenes a sense of reality. From her beginnings as a child actor, Waters explains that she was always different and her stardom since the TWILIGHT saga is an unusual and fascinating one. He also shares insights about his own career and movies, including how he made Michelle Pfeiffer's character in BATMAN RETURNS into a genuinely interesting female protagonist, and what happened in the DEMOLITION MAN editing room...

Love this! It drives me insane how dismissive people are of Kristen Stewart. Even her performance in the Twilight movies really hold up - she took that role beyond a caricature of a teenage girl (despite how people criticize her for not playing it the way they are used to) and made it a lot more interesting and compelling than it would have been had someone else done it. I wish she got credit for that.

So, the story was Olivier did initially offer Kristen the assistant role, but her agent messed up and she didn't get the memo until Mia Wasikowska booked the part. That's why Olivier then offered her Chloe's role. But then, Mia had to get out because of another project or something, so Kristen's back in the role. That's destiny working for you! :D

How funny seeing you mention Focus with Margot Robbie and Will Smith because the original cast for that movie were Kristen Stewart and Ben Affleck.

Tbh it’s actually not true that no one is talking about the Twilight movies now, but it’s actually the opposite....there actually has been a huge Twilight renaissance in the past couple years with Gen Z discovering the movies and loving the campiness. But Kristen still not given credit for how she was sort of the best part of the movies - she’s still treated as a punchline while they love Robert Pattinson. The misogyny in the differences in how they’ve been treated by the general public and media throughout the years has always been so bizarre.

I never understood that either except it has a lot to do with who is considered likable and obviously robert has it easier being straight white male. Perception matters a lot and the fact is that people dont like kristen and dont understand her so theyre going to call her a bad actress no matter how good she is. I always thought she was a much better actor than him. He always comes off to me like hes doing all this shoddy accent work and piling on all the eccentricities in his performance to attempt to hide his lack of emotional vulnerability. None of his performances ever feel genuine

The Kristen Stewart interview Daniel Waters is talking about was not acting, it was a very casual interview 4 years (!) after she made Sils Maria. That story wasn't made up; her and Assayas have retold it only about 30 times. Good interview, but I wish you had discussed her work with experienced actors that she did 2 years before Panic Room. I think it's so much better than most of her films.
