+eric g It's a first ascent. Of course it counts. It's up to him what "counts"- he is the first one to climb it. If someone wants to go there and climb it without the tree limb, they're welcome to do so and suggest a new grade and name if appropriate.

It's just editing. Climbers are typically forced to do the route and then do each individual move again (or the entire climb) with the cameras on the close up of the holds. If you look at his actual send footage, there is only one camera angle. They splice the footage with other attempts of close ups to add to the viewers experience.
