DIY Wooden Coasters with Pretty Paper Napkins: Here's how transform wooden rounds using the decoupage method, a pretty napkin, and Mod Podge, as seen in the June 2023 Issue of Stroll Harbor Bluffs.
I use Dishwasher Safe ModPodge. I DO NOT put the coasters in the dishwasher, however, I wanted the sealer to be water resistant, for when the condensation falls onto it when in use.
Supplies include:
4 3/4" wooden rounds
Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge
Pretty Paper Napkin
Sandpaper
Adhesive Cork Backing

While these are very pretty, using any "sealant" does not make them water or heat resistant which is vital to a coaster. Also, it's important that you use a high quality decoupage glue (not the one most commonly known) or it will become sticky AFTER the sealant has been applied. I'm glad I have these same napkins. This definitely gives me an idea!❤

Thanks for the comment. I used the "Dishwasher safe Gloss" and so far they haven't turned sticky. Good point about it not being heat resistant. I think the technique of using these napkins is really effective, even if not used for coasters.

I think that they are beautiful,l am making wooden coasters at the moment,l have used papers from paper pads and gold sheets to put some sparkle on them and I am definitely having a go with your idea.

Is it water proof the Marge podge

The Dishwasher Modpodge is water resistant, strongly, particularly on glass/plastic. On the wooden coasters, it's highly water resistant - I wouldn't put the wooden coasters in the dishwasher.

Thanks. This was an "old" purchase from Tuesday Morning, I think. Now, I always take a peek at Marshalls, or TJMaxx for cute paper napkins. I always look for them when I'm out, but have to be patient and not only buy the ones I love, as they can be costly.

@@DanielaMellen yes they can. I live in a rural area in Maine so all our store are 30 plus minutes away. The closest craft store is 2 and half hours. 😂. I buy packs and use a couple and then I am left with the rest. Then I have to store them. So I have stopped buying then for a while. Lol

I used to live in New Hampshire, so I remember the day trips (or half day trips, if you were quick) to get to a "big store". Since I use paper napkins for meals, I just set a few aside for my artwork.... this helps me justify buying them.

I have had them for 6+ months now, and haven't had anything stick to them. I just wipe them with a damp cloth to clean. Be sure to use the "waterproof" Mod Podge, as it will eventually cure without any stickiness.

Is that water proof mod podge a good sealant to use for other decoupage items like shells?

Once the adhesive (Mod-Podge®) is cured, it is heat resistant, meaning it could be used for a hot cup of coffee or soup. I wouldn't use it as a trivet for a hot from the oven casserole pan.
