Personally am not a fan of shorts they are too similar to tiktok except that the majority of them are just people using them as an advert to their next video and I don't like or use tiktok either I'd just rather wait for the full video to be released from the channels I'm subscribed to or watch any full video I might like the content of. Although your approach to them actually being usefull and not related to any future videos or just being a silly clip of someone elses work is refreshing to see, kind of like getting a cheat sheet for when you forget something you mentioned in your main channel videos and yes I see the irony in the adverts although as said its usefull information and as all techies do we forget some of the basics from time to time like what was the obscure term for this or that again or where did I see this feature before etc which has probably contributed to the rise in views of your channel also. I think the only downside of your method was not telling the regular viewers that this was an experiment at the end as doing so would have opened yourself up to get more data at the end by creating a pole or some sort of quick questionair for both regular and new viewers as to what we thought of the your new presenting style. All in all though to sum it up I think we learned that if you did compare your analytics to a similar subbed channel that purely put shorts advertising their next video against yours, yours would come out on top almost guaranteed. Excellently produced as always hopefully yourself reads this and maybe gets some extra insight as to what shorts could mean to others like myself.

RIght on, Paul. I will say... just making and publishing a Short every day was harder than it sounds, especially when you're trying to make focused, original Shorts content that serve the needs of the viewer. I sometimes notice that many of the Creators who wrestle with Shorts are just treating them as an afterthought.

@@Daniel_Batal I think I'm in that category. I usually make a short to promote a long form video that might be flagging a bit. Maybe a dedicated shorts strategy is where I should be rather than random hit and run shorts. Great stuff as always. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment too.🤗🤗

You're not alone in that thought process. I think too many Creators started out by making Shorts with little or no value and it turned people off. I wanted to see what happened if we decided to make Shorts that were actually useful. The response I got was phenomenal.

I literally was running the same experiment at the same time. My channel is just over 1100 subs and I found EVERYTHING DB talks about to be the same for me but with proportionately less numbers. I did the experiment using clips from my listical videos but still it became a grind. Drop off after stopping happened just as DB shows but I actually saw a 20% drop in new subs but no change at all in lost subs. Thanks DB for this videos and I did learn a bunch of Resolve tips that are already making an impact on my long form edits

I did what I now think was crazy, which didn't work. I posted 100 shorts in 8 days. It was gruelling, to say the least. The idea was that I would promote one of my books, which had not been selling well. None of the shorts did that well. So far, the best one (about 10 days old now) has about 350 views. From the 100 shorts, I have so far put on 19 subscribers. The channel was flatlining before, as I have never really uploaded much to it. At the end of each video (basically mini bytes from the book) I held up a copy of the book and said "Buy this book today and change your life tomorrow" I now like Daniel's saying ASKHOLE :-) The upshot of this ..... I did not sell one single book so far from this exercise. Now..... Daniels's shorts do something basic... They offer VALUABLE quick tips on how to do something. In short (no pun intended), they provide USE VALUE, which is ironic as my book is 100% focused on achieving success by providing USE VALUE to others. Hope this helps someone to either save a lot of time or learn what NOT to do.. For me, what Daniel did here has extreme potential value going forward. Many Thanks

Great insights there, Martin! I definitely think that we, as Creators, have to think first and foremost about the viewer experience. We need to provide a great experience for every viewer with each Short, provide value with every Short and give the viewer a reason to watch another video (of any length) from us. I don't believe Shorts are right for every channel but I do think they're right for most. When people tell me they tried Shorts and they don't work, I always think to myself, "Shorts work, your strategy didn't".

@@Daniel_Batal Just a side note. It was through you that I looked at Resolve. I was using FCPX, but as I was not a frequent user, I never really got on with it. I used screenflow a lot. Then POW watched you on the NOOB videos, and I was hooked. I did all 100 of the shorts on resolve. The fastest way to edit and super software. I have just ordered the speed editor, which will be here in a few days, and it comes with Studio, so it's a great deal. I must say that Resolve has re-ignited my love of video, as I no longer feel 90% of my effort is fighting with software. Keep up the good work. I am watching closely :-)

The shorts format is perfect for detailing how to do 'a thang' in DR. When I want to do an effect, etc., the bare bones instructions is what I want. I began noticing you apart from other tutors with this approach. Possibly you were creating a niche? Keep it up. It really makes sense to have the short format for Q&A. I have serious memory loss from brain surgery. The idea of getting a 30-60 second how to works really well. I will be visiting and revisiting these quick tutorials much more often than the 10-30+minute videos that are all encompassing and I feel can be a tremendous waste of time. I really like the short and sweet approach to teaching something in bites, versus a seven coarse meal. Please keep doing the DR shorts. Thank you.

The most important thing in shorts to go well is the average percent views, if the average percent views are 80% + it will go well for shorts (40 sec +) for 15 sec below shorts it should be 100%+ Just check the top-performing shorts in this series and compare the average percent views matrix from other shorts.

Interesting for sure. I also did a similar experiment for 30 days (BTW, agreed, it started to wear me out) and it seems on the surface that educational content is more likely to generate "steady" views, but more entertainment or "mindless" subjects (my interpretation) seemed to fare much better overall. Show a cat falling off a TV and it probably would generate 2M views. The next test maybe fall off your chair a few times while working on Resolve tips... I'd watch it. 😂 Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to create this video.

When you changed your titles it helped FOR SURE. With the same title beginning and the same talking head/background it looked like i was getting the same video. And then when multiple showed up in one session, i thought KZbin was broken. 😂 I'm very curious about how they work over time. That's one of the HUGE benefits of longform video, they can live forever. If shorts don't, which i have feared all along, then they are not as valuable... But still worth trying.

i have come across many channels doing this posting long or short every single day for a month - and whilst the concept is interesting - so many creators say it lead them to being burnt out and exhausted. yeah its good to try experiment like this - but got to take care of that mental and physical health - being mindful of your limitations. this video serves as hope - whilst uploading anything daily might not be viable for many (real life must come first) - i acknowledge that upload frequency can be key to growth. as creators we must think about how we can create a schedule for ourselves, that can go with our daily lives outside of the internet and outside of YT!! cool video with some interesting stats here Daniel. 👍👍

Just to understand a bigger piece of the picture, I'd like to see on a channel your size the impact of VOD impressions in addition to the views. I've been posting shorts pretty consistently since just about the beginning, and a huge misconception is that (now) youtube will prioritize shorts over long form on youtube proper. While I believe the Best for Viewer endcard is currently broken because of this, I haven't noticed a negative impact to browse/suggested impressions for long form or live. Based on my observations with shorts, that audience has a different viewer behavior, which is why I think it's smart for youtube to keep those experiences distinct. One thing I will say about shorts though is that currently, the ability to reply to comments via shorts may be slightly overpowered as far as converting shorts viewers to long form.

Good analysis. The overall viewpoint of shorts will, I assume, change over time as it just becomes a normal part of KZbin. (If they aren't already) Your experiment was great. IMO there are a few reasons shorts have gotten a bad name for channels up to this point: 1. People would post unrelated shorts to their pillar content and therefor lose viewers or subscribers because that's "not where they're here for." 2. People are just reposting TikTok content that's, again, unrelated to their pillar content. 3. KZbin is experimenting still with the way shorts are recommended and pushed to viewers. 4. Shorts are just being used ONLY as a funnel to the main content. When I'm watching shorts, reels, or TikTok I'm normally in the "bite sized and rapid fire" mindset of content consumption. I'm not looking to "discover" a new channel and have to watch more... or worse... have to look for part 2, 3, etc of the short to get the rest. Thanks for another great video and doing the experiment!

I think enough time has passed that a lot of viewers have learned how to operate Resolve. Of course there will always be "noobs". For me, many were interesting but, I'm just a basic editor so, many were just that, interesting. Honestly some I just passed by because I didn't, immediately see how they were useful to my purposes. Others I keep going back to because they do fit my needs. If I were into more advanced editing, they all were great. But, I'm not so, some just weren't within my needs. I will say that overall, it did "hurt" the long form versions because I could get that "quick tip" I didn't know I needed or the tip I was looking for without going to the long form. So, it's kind of a trade off. "Should I make a short and a long form of the same content?" Knowing, from experience, that you usually go into more detail with your long form, I say yes YOU should. For a quick tip your shorts are great but, for those needing more detail your long form is great. So, you in particular, are reaching the "how do I do this" audience and the "I don't understand how to this" audience. For me to do shorts, it would be taking a clip of a certain element from a longer project in order to highlight that process. Such as, I'm and acrylic painter so, I might extract a tip on how to paint trees. That clip would then become a short. But, unless you're one of my following along viewers, there is not going to be much value in the long form videos for the tip seeker. This may be why shorts seem to add a "handicap" to my channel.

I appreciate that you mentioned how tough it is to create shorts regularly as it's often assumed easy to the point that they are dismissed as valid content, creating shorts can be a quite a bit of work especially if one has multiple social media and or you're niche requires several minutes hours or even days of painting sketching or drawing and you happen to be a faceless channel which isn't doing commentary or driving interest via brand personality and providing value. I had considered shifting a bit more towards conversational art tips and topics along side my usual art videos but after the weird glitch that occurred a few weeks ago I'm nervous something else might "glitch" example intro hi today we are going to talk about these paints and how they work, suddenly the screen blinks out or something like that, lol I'm kidding but who knows, social makes me nervous haha even after years of business goal related use, but yeah creating both shorts while also trying to improve long form isn't easy regardless of niche but especially if you're doing a lot of physically and mentally creative work and your almost constantly trying to think of ideas which are helpful but won't take an eternity to create. that said, this is very insightful some of this I noticed as well though I don't upload every single day I've been uploading every other day to every two or three days as I need time to record the content. I appreciate shorts I don't have any particularly negative feelings regarding shorts but I have noticed a drop in views and even video stutter to the point in which video are not pushed out which felt discouraging but I'm still trying my best, thanks for the info ☮️❤

My personal experience has been that if you've done a good job helping KZbin understand who your content should be served to, everything works out well. The biggest problem I see is that creators tend to come up short in developing strong value propositions for their channels and executing on targeted content strategy. That's a general statement, not point that at you. I'm hoping the larger take-away from this video is that really thinking about how all of our content works together and understanding why a viewer would want to come back and watch tomorrow is the key to success, regardless of content type.

Example is a woman living in a van making Shorts of her making breakfast. To me that's not content and it can be aggravating when youtube has decided that it should be in my feed. Shorts could also make it tempting to make zero effort content, like 20 sec gameplay with no commentary. I think I've only subscribed to one creator because of Shorts, I haven't unsubscribed to anyone. KZbin didn't put your Shorts on my homepage, but it did put this video on there. I'm not a subscriber to your channel. Thanks for sharing data, it's always interesting to see how things work.

Well... not really? Yes, there is content we are all recommended every day (long, short, community tab posts, live streams, stories, etc). Yes, we have the ability in the elipsis of any content to choose to not be shown that content or ask to hide that channel. The reaility is that's probably a smaller worry and not worth any real focus. KZbin is getting better at serving the right content to the proper target audience based on their behavior. I would focus on making sure the content you make serves the needs of that audience. In your example, I wouldn't advice Creators, "Don't make long-form KZbin videos because they might get served to someone who doesn't like that content and they might block you" so I can't really make that argument for Shorts either.

I personally have my pc set to certain sound levels and shorts have no sound control(or at least didn't when I was giving some chance to 'ANY SHORT' and did add like 2 extra people I subbed to now) but yeah... just personally hate how just glancing will blast me out of my seat... not sure why 'Normal YT Volume' setting isn't applied by default...

This video was very helpful information. I for one do not watch shorts. i have maybe watched 5-6 in my life. YT still bombards me with them. i have un-subbed from many channels for posting too many shorts to the subscriber feed. i wish more creators realized they dont have to publish them to their subs. it is hard to teach or learn anything very meaningful with shorts. thank you for not clogging up my feed as i really like your longer form content.

@@Daniel_Batal i basically only look at my subscriptions feed. YT tends to recommend only stuff i am not interested in so that tab is useless to me. so whenever someone i subscribe to publishes a short to the subscriber feed i have to scroll past it. many creators dont know or dont use the button that lets you choose if this happens. i think you did use it cause i dont recall seeing too many from you. hope this helps.

Regarding the titles, I often do a similar thing with some gameplay series, such as Last of Us 1 and 2, so when I publish a chapter at a time, I'll start with the chapter name, since that shows at the start of the title, then the rest is "Last of Us Chapter blah blah blah". That's because people will be searching for how to get past something in a particular chapter, and this gives the information on where to look right at the start. Interesting thing about the Shorts, too. I've sometimes done it for a brief clip of a forthcoming gameplay video, if something stands out. I might try it from older clips, too 😃

It was very interesting to hear what you learned through the process. Did you film your footage 9:16 @ 1080 or did you reframe and rescale 16:9 footage? I have a 16:9 source for my shorts but the rescale I am using in Resolve left me with huge frame borders at the top and bottom of my 9:16 frame. Even smart rescale and reframe didn't help much - but I am pretty sure that that is user error.

Let me ask this… as a creator, what if we don’t enjoy doing shorts. We can’t handle the mental stress of the ups and downs. We see other creators and it blows up their channel, yet does nothing for us and feel it destroys long form as well as we lose subscribers. Smaller channels can’t afford that! Is the loss of long form viewers worth the risk of a few sprinkles of shorts subscribers? So if we don’t enjoy them and can’t handle the stress of them, are we just to be left behind with long form? Are we being punished as creators for not getting on the shorts ban wagon? Because everyone is screaming shorts shorts shorts? And it’s being shoved at us left and right to get on the train or be left behind? I don’t want to be a shorts channel. I don’t want to do 15 sec of content spending an hour of editing. I like long form. I like teaching people to garden and homestead. I love video editing. So is my YT career dead in its tracks without shorts? Thanks for letting me ramble :) Great video and experiment. I did see all the shorts but didn’t care about Davinci resolve so I just swiped past. 😂

There are still some people who don't watch shorts. There are also still even more who don't read community tab posts or leave comments on videos. I don't know that fact should be viewed as anything other than an individual viewer choice. About 70% of views on KZbin everyday come from mobile devices. Recent studies showed of those views, the vast majority (regardless of aspect ratio) come from people holding their phone vertically, not rotating it sideways. So, while you may not own a mobile device or watch KZbin from one, from a Creator standpoint that puts you in the minority of viewers. No judgement 😅

To be truthful, I never look at the shorts. I wish I could filter them out of my subscribed feed. They clutter it up. I tried for a while, but I found MOST shorts, never finish. The person, we will say you for argument sake, gets to the end of the short and you hear ""all you need is ...........""???????? So now I ignore them. I will not unsubscribe from any of them, I like their content. But shorts are just that. Short. I'd prefer to watch a 20 minute video that teaches me something, or just entertains me Than a bunch of shorts that are incomplete. I have nothing against any creator that does shorts. But maybe rehearse a few times so you can get everything into it. If most were doing shorts saying Join me on Tuesday for the best video seen on KZbin!! You won't want to miss it. Would be better than most shorts. Just my opinion. I don't watch 2 a 3 or more hour live feeds either. I do have to act like I'm still alive once in a while!

The most important data is that you earned $6.23 (minus tax fees)! So you need 30 videos/shorts and 118k views for $6.23! I also had "catastrophic" earning on shouts - only one short (first and last) and I had 3.2K views and 12cents. So if you don't have something extremely cute, weird, funny ... Shorts isn't for you!
