That was one of the brilliant, yet often overlooked, parts of Harry Potter; we could idenitfy with the teachers through ones we had when we were in school. It's a good bet each of us knew a Mcgonigall, the strict, no nonsence teacher who excelled at her job and cared for her students, and a Lupin; the teacher who was almost a friend, whose classes didnt feel quite like lessons yet you learned quite a lot anyway. Umbridge played on that teacher you 'knew' hated you, and seemed to enjoy picking on and punishing you. More than anything, its this manipulation of our own reminiscences which makes Umbridge the villain she is.

@FraternityOfShadows3 жыл бұрын
Sauron deserves S tier based on LotR alone. The sad part is that people often mistake movie Sauron with book Sauron, and they are COMPLETELY different. In the books, the big S is not a flying eye, he does have a physical form even - just a lot weaker than he once was. Sauron is a looming threat, ever returning, turning friends into foes, allies into enemies. His influence by his words and malicious will is unparalleled. And yet, he is not an unbeatable force per se - he could not hope to defeat Numenor - a kingdom of mortals - in a straight fight, so he allowed them to capture him, and corrupted them from within - from prison no less. The last Alliance beat his armies, and himself, but his malicious will prevailed and influenced Isildur, bringing the human king his doom. Even at late 3rd era, the united forces of mortals of north-western Middle-Earth could've beaten him - it's just that they will not unite against Sauron this time. Even his eventual downfall didn't come to Sauron because he was too blind to see that someone would be able to destroy the Ring - because in fact, Sauron in his pride was actually right, that noone would be able to cast it into the fire of Mount Doom. He lost by an "accident", and judging by how improbable was the series of events that led to Gollum being present on mount doom to fall with the Ring, Eru Ilvuatar himself was probably involved.

Yes, I felt the same way! He's not the best villain, but he does have a menacing presence in the books, and he's also more calculating. Especially when we see him as Tom Riddle. I would honestly say Palpatine in a better villain than Vader. His backstory isn't as good as Vader, but basically everything else is better about him imo. Especially what he accomplished that made him emperor of the entire galaxy. I really love Palpatine as a villain; however, he wasn't the smartest (here's why). When the rule of 2 was implemented, he knew his new apprentice had to kill him in order to continue the sith line. Palpatine was following the guide book like a good little sith lord, but then he got arrogant with his power after the jedi were almost all killed. This is where he thought leaving the sith agenda was good and boom, Anakin out here chucking that man into a space hole lmao. Not to mention, he was born into evil, Vader was turned (meaning Anakin will always be inside Vader, no matter how many people he killed) I really like palpatines lore, especially how he hated a 14 year old (Padme) cuz her views were progressive and cared for her people lmao, classic old guy hating the youth solid A for me

I recently reread Order of the Phoenix and the great thing with Umbridge is that... Well, even though she is 'just' a teacher, she makes the reader in the position of Harry feel powerless and unable to fight back. A villain should have the power to make the hero feel small, should seem like a huge challenge, and she does that really well. Voldemort... Well, Harry fought him so often and he never really did anything to him, it's almost comedic how often Harry faces him and gets away with it. For being "the darkest wizard of all time", that's weak. Losing against an 11, 12, 14, 15 anf 17 year old is... not that impressive.

He's that all consuming evil that lurks in the background, and even though he never directly is interjected into the storyline, the stakes are clear from the start.
@julespulp2145 жыл бұрын
2:45 Sauron was going to burn Isildur alive with his own hands, just like he did with Gil-galad, the High King of the Noldor, moments before. Killing the last heir of the kings of men in front of his whole army that way is a lot more brutal than using a mace. And a huge guy smashing someone with a mace is already brutal enough.

There is just so much more to Sauron than you seem to be giving him credit for. The Philosophy of Sauron video by Hello Future Me takes a deep dive into the Lord of the Rings' titular character. Regardless, great video, and I do enjoy your takes that conflict with my own. If everyone had the same tier lists then these videos wouldn't be so intriguing. Keep up the great work man!

People think I'm disturbing when I say Umbridge is my HP's favorite character. They say "omg she os DISGUSTING" but a that is why I love her. Sauron is unreal, fearful, but he is THE evil, and this is an idea. Voldemort is kinda THE EVIL, but his story added layers for me, and I also think of him as a result of fear circumstances. But Dolores? Dolores is my Far Right Aunt, that is not using fucking masks because "the president said we don't need them". (Shout out for my Brazilians here) Dolores is a real villain

It comes down to choices. She chooses it all. Most huge vilains don't, they have deep histories backing up their choices and actions, real motivations. But the umbridges of the world, it comes down to choice, their own selfishness, personal gain. There's no redemption. They have no soul.

It was the moment I read that Umbridge was practically torturing children that made me want to strangle the woman. The movie really didn’t help. Having a face just fuelled the fire. Also, I just started reading ASOIAF and hearing you talk about Joffrey Baratheon in such a way, genuinely scared me a bit.
@critica77y774 жыл бұрын
Joffrey Baratheon could have a tiny bit of humanity deep down, I think, but if so, it's continually stifled by a combination of Cersei's coddling, Robert's constant absence, mental illness, and the fact that Joffrey just doesn't think he needs to improve himself. I'm not saying he's not an *extremely* bad person, because he definitely is, and I'm not even saying that he doesn't deserve to be hated as much as he is, because in the end, regardless of who we point the finger at to determine who's to blame, he's still a tyrant who needs to die for the sake of the realm. I'm not the kind of apologist who thinks we should give everyone a second chance at the expense of others. I'm just saying it's not surprising he ended up the way he did all things considered.

Yeah. I don't feel deadly hatred for him, but I do hate him bad enough, and he is a deep villain especially considering what the story needed and in comparison to other really boring villains out there..

I agree and I think the books actually do quite a lot of digging into Voldemort but allow him to remain mysterious as well which gives him a subtlety that many villains lack. Daniel even mentions he dislikes it when it is too blatant and maybe that is how he feels about Voldemortbut in the books at least I think he is not giving due credit. How many villains are able to manifest as 1- a parsite (As in Philosophers stone) 2- a memory (As in Chamber) 3- through a catspaw (As in Prisoner) 4- through their own resurection (As in the graveyard in Goblet) 5- without being present (As in phoenix such a frustrating and clever thing to persuade everyone he was not there but was) 6- as a terrirost (see half-blood) and finally as an occupying dictator (As in 7). The reveals as well from what people tell us of him or refuse to tell us, the memories of the diary, the journey's into the pensieve just such a clever constant hinting. I could make some interesting arguments for the Emperor and Vader too as with many big series the deeper you look into the characters the better you appreciate them as long as there is depth there. If you note all that Daniel can see in Ishamael because he is a massive WOT fan, others just see him as a guy in black who tries to kill Rand and never get into his philosophy or changing character or subtle manchinations.

Gotta be honest man, I feel the complete opposite way about Voldemort. In the books he has a backstory, he always has a presence in each book as the ultimate threat without even appearing (kinda like Sauron), is shown on occasion to not needlessly murder people "because why not? lmao", and most importantly, dies just like anyone else. The maniac spent decades trying to elevate himself above humans, becoming immortal. Desperately trying to prove that he was special. Then he just hits the ground like a sack of potatoes because he was so obsessed with himself that he forgot to look at the bigger picture. In the movies? Zero backstory, dies like he is some sort of godlike being, and there is no explanation as to why he is evil because.... _pale man bad_ Book Voldemort, to me, belongs next to Sauron in the B-tier on this ranking.

One of the many reasons why we all hate Umbridge is because the thought that someone so real (a teacher, a boss, a parent) can so easily control your life and tell everyone when they should and should not believe you is so scary. That’s why when we think about her we usually remember about the “I must not tell lies” scene or even hear her odious laugh (she only laughed to make people feel small and stupid...)

The White Witch for me is A. Nowhere else have I read anything where her no speaking interactions with Aslan matches each other. In such a way as they are aware of the power each has. Each time she encountered him like in The Magician's Nephew and the next book where they first meet again, I felt anything could happen. It actually delivered with what happened later. Only the Black Rider of The Dark Is Rising Sequence equals that presence. There, it matches Arthur and the Lady both. Merlin is there, but when they meet, Merlin had no control. Rand and the Dark One are on a totally different level, of course.

I feel the reason you keep coming down so hard on NARNIA is you're not accounting for it being a children's series. I don't mean a YA series like HARRY POTTER or HUNGER GAMES. I mean a series meant for small children, more in-line with Roald Dahl or Hans Christian Andersen or WIZARD OF OZ. Yes, it's very broad and without subtlety, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I feel comparing it to these more adult-themed fantasies is unfair; it's like criticizing WIZARD OF OZ for not being like GAME OF THRONES.
@Trisjack205 жыл бұрын
And writing an effective children's villain is more difficult than you might think. Writing for children is not easier than writing for adults only different. If you write at all I would suggest the challenge. Write something and see if you can get a 9 year old to love it and read it all the way through and want to know what happens next and even reread it. Not easy.... no not easy. Establishing the witch the way Lewis does as beautiful, powerful, elegant with magic, castle, elite wolf guard and a cool sleigh, someone who gives out sweets and complements but then turns on the protagonist, betrays him and uses him to kill the most powerful character in the book is actually very effective and clever. Much of what someone like Daniel sees as way too blatant and obvious was just enough to get my kids speculating and desperate in the end to see her eaten by a lion! I agree Narnia is good but has to be considered in context as does LOTR or StarWars or Harry Potter.

CONTEXT FOR SAURON USING A HAND ON ISILDUR: In the FULL (not "extended", not "theatrical") version of the prologue battle Sauron grabbed and set Gil-galad (elf leader with a spear) on fire before throwing him away as the elf was becoming a melting burning mush. Plus right before he went to reach for Isildur, Sauron already shattered the only weapon that could scratch him as if it was a low-quality glass. So... It would seem that Sauron was planning to happily melt Isildur to death. Elendil's son just had to face the death of his father a moment before...
