Honorable Mentions: Theon Greyjoy - I think his arc in season 2 is perfect, but I don’t really like the reek character arc. It’s very repetitive because in almost every scene, Ramsay is torturing Theon, and after a while, I got a bit bored of it. Not to mention that that lasts for 3 seasons of him serving Ramsay. So Theon doesn’t really have much to do besides getting tortured for most of his screen time. Him escaping and reconciling with his sister is pretty good and is another well-done aspect in the later seasons. However, by that point, I wasn’t that attached to him. Sansa Stark - Sophie Turner did a great job in her role and her performance was always amazing. The main issue I have with Sansa is that she never has any impact on the story and is mostly passive throughout her whole journey until the end of season 5. And by that time her character was getting butchered by David and Dan. So in essence, I think she has a similar pitfall to Dany in that the later seasons should have been her best, but weren’t. Leaving me to judge her first 5 seasons in which she didn’t have a lot to do. However, Dany had a much better first 4 seasons than she did. Samwell Tarly - Sam as a character isn’t really flawed, but I don’t think he can really compete with the characters on my list. The two best aspects are his humorful spirit that contrasts the dreary mood of the Night's Watch and his character arc of becoming braver. The character arc though is pretty generic and right away that would make me put him under other characters. Not to mention he spends a lot of time with Gilly and I think she’s genuinely a boring character. Hodor - Hodor Khal Drogo - I LOVE JASON MAMOA, so it pained me not to include him. His portrayal as Khal Drogo was excellent, but when looking at the actual character there’s not a lot of depth. His small arc is pretty straightforward and he sadly dies right when he starts getting great :( Sir Jorah Mormont - He’s a cute man whose main function is serving Dany and doesn’t have a lot going on for himself, besides just serving Dany and loving her. So right away I don’t think he can compete in the top 20. The traitor scene was great, but once that happens he kind of gets deleted out of the story until he bumps into Tyrion. Brienne of Tarth - Besides the scenes where she’s talking about her past with Podrick and calling out Jaimie for being a wimp, I never really connected with Brienne on an emotional level. I like her backstory and the concept of her character is cool. It’s just that, most of her time is spent traveling around and there are barely any good dialogue scenes for her character. She kind of peaks during her travels with Jaime and It’s also ironic that one of her best scenes comes from season 8. Davos Seaworth - Davos feels like a neutral character. He doesn’t do a lot that I love nor does he do anything that I dislike. Thus making me consider him more for a top 30 instead of 20. Tormund - He’s a really fun character who’s definitely uplifted by the great work of Kristofer Hivju. It’s just that, he isn’t really complex. I think he’s similar to Bronn but he lacks different aspects that makes Bronn work so well. He’s also a character that primarily gets most of his screen time later on in the show which was when the writing took a dive.

Tywin is the best villain hands down, I think its shown when he tells Tyrion: "you'r a fool if you think He (Joffrey) is the most powerful man in Westeros. And in the scene where he walks up to Joffrey who is sitting on the throne, you see how small Joffrey is, and how much more of a commanding presence Tywin is.
@Nick-xu7ns2 жыл бұрын
Tywin is so good I don’t even view him as a villain. He doesn’t do things just to be cruel like Joffrey, Ramsay, or Cersei (barring perhaps some of his interactions with Tyrion. Though to him that child killed his wife so it’s not ‘just to be cruel’ even if we know it is unwarranted). He just understands that sometimes to achieve your goals you have to do less than honorable things.

@@Nick-xu7ns This. Tywin isn't really evil unless you view him from todays standards, which is dumb, because this isn't set today. His actions are purely for the benefit of his family and is so good at negotation/manipulation he could get what he wants peacefully as often as he does from violence. His main flaw is not accepting Tyrion as his son, which is stated in the first season as being the standard in this world, but is obviously a shame because Tyrion was the most similiar to him out of his 3 children.

Because although he's cruel and most of his actions throughout the show are something you despise, you also can see things from his eyes and know that he's simply doing whats best for his family, which in a feudal setting is absolutely what a man at the head of a powerhouse family would do Beyond that, every interaction he has with any character, he's just so dominating and convincing. The scene where he rides into the throne room on his horse, stops to let it take a dump, and just completely makes the entire room do a perspective 180, is so top notch. But you can say that literally about any other character on this list. I think that supercuts makes it very clear at the beginning that there is just a lot of great characters in this show, and cramping them into top 20 is difficult. So Davos not being there doesn't mean he isn't a great character, but just think about all the other characters on this list. Every single one of them has a great scene, so bringing up one of Davos just isn't enough to surpass others. Personally, the only character that I think shouldn't be on that list is Stannis. He is extremely overhyped in my opinion. Like I can't think of one scene of Stannis where he genuinely has some emotional character development. Yes, he is a menace, but nothing about him is that compelling to be honest. Still, I did think characters on this list through, and even though I would like to see Jorah on the list for instance, he just can't compete with these complex characters (except fking Stannis lmao).

I'd have put Olenna in the top 2 (alongside Tywin) since the two are probably the most brutal players of the game. Both put their family above all else. Tywin puts his family's name as the greatest priority and he will destroy anything that threatens that. Olenna is a lot more subtle, but just as brutal as Tywin. Also every time they share a scene, the scene is so interesting and they play off each other very well. Some of my favourite scenes in GoT are scenes with just Olenna and Tywin

Tywin and Olenna are fantastic, both in the books and tv series! Tywin absolutely delivers on being the cold, hard, intimidating military commander type character that we’re meant to fear and respect- but what I love about Olenna is that she has none of that battle prestige behind her character, and yet she’s equally as intimidating and bold. Like, she’s just an old woman that sits and strolls through the gardens all day but can absolutely go one on one with Tywin Lannister. Who is literally one of the greatest military commanders in Westeros. On top of being so strong-willed she’s also very cunning and charming, being a driving force behind a lot of events going on in the capital without many noticing. Olenna deserves more credit, she’s an incredibly well rounded character.

He really wants to prove himself but learns that just being and believing in himself is good enough, which was a really nice take away. Sansa as a character is really underrated. I think the people that don't like her feel like she is naive and annoying and makes bad decisions, which makes her one of the most realistic characters in the show. She represents a character that aims to live the life she was born for and expected to have, but then what happens when that life gets derailed. She portrays innocence that breaks more and more with each episode as she gets engulfed in a brutal world that she clearly is not equipped for. Sure she is passive and at the mercy of other characters, but that makes perfect sense. A teenage girl who is surrounded by only enemies who want to use her is not going to have much power. And it's her powerlessness in an environment that is so hungry for power that makes her character compelling.
@Patrickbatemanharvard Жыл бұрын
For the peak seasons 1-4 she has no major character arc (no major plot focused on her) like Jon, Tyrion, Daenerys, jaime, Arya etc... she's nothing but victim all the time, crying and getting abused by almost everyone in the Kingslanding and for the mediocre seasons 5 and 6 she continue with the same trend now being abused by littlefinger and Boltons... At that time she barely made any moves on her own no major transformations... It's only until season 7 and 8 something is done and by that time the writing had gone awry.. No disrespect to the character Sansa or actress Sophie turner (she played that role very well)... I think these are the reasons he didn't included Sansa in this list... Jorah starting as a spy trying to win his pardon and falling in love with Daenerys, being rejected but staying out of sheer love and devotion, and just his general knowledge and mentor vibe make him great to me. I loved the arena scene, and the scene when he comes back to Daenerys after Sam heals his grayscale. Davos, on the other hand, is kind of the later equivalent of Ned, who was the stabilising force thanks to whom the Starks and to an extent the kingdom's politics remained stable, a man of honor and principles. Davos, while not being nearly as influential as Ned, stands out as a beacon of morality, honesty and genuine devotion to the good of the people, somewhat like Varys but unlike him, he refuses to use questionable or destructive means. His relationship with princess Shireen and his opposition to Melisandre, as well as his counseling to keep the main characters on track made him really stand out to me. What’s cool about Syrio is seeing just how much impact he has on Arya given how little time he was given. Agree. Sansa is underrated cause she was a bit annoying at the start and didnt ve a great actress portraying her. But her charackter developement is one of the very best of the show. For me she switched roles with Arya for the Stark girl i like. First i really liked Arya and disliked Sansa. Then it turned around as Arya was nothing more then a redundant comic relief char with plot armour standing around with a arrogant smirk. Sansa on the other hand suffered from the acts of others and grew into a strong woman who pulled the strings herself.

I was so excited to love Sansa, but sadly for me I think D&D (unsurprisingly) botched her character arc in the show. I’m hoping this gets developed more in the books! I’m absolutely here for the “naive character smartens up and becomes a wise, but complete badass” arc 👏🏼

tyrion is quite overrated imo. always felt that the character lacked the depth and darkness that he should have had. too much of a likable uncomplicated "good guy" protagonist. feel like they could have been a lot more subversive in their portrayal. otherwise agree, the kings landing scenes of the first 3 seasons were the peak of the show.

The fact that characters like Theon & Yara Greyjoy, Sansa & Bran Stark, Davos Seaworth, Tormund, Ygriette, Melisandre, Brienne of Tarth, Jorah Mormont, Khal Drogo, Margery Tyrell, Renly Baratheon, Shae, Gendry, Podrick, Osha, Hodor, Samwell Tarly, Gilly, Shireen, Barristan Selmy, Pycelle, Maestor Aemon, Jaqen H'ghar, Thoros of Myr and there's still more that I could name are so well written and have so many great moments but are still not on list and some nowhere near (and quite rightly so) shows just how brilliant George RR Martin's writing is and how great the early series are too. I've loved watching these videos as I'd forgotten just how brilliant it was thanks to the awful final series. I'm going to sound like a Lannister fanboy here but Tyrion, Tywin and Jamie are my favourites. Jamie and Arya definitely have the best character journeys and arcs

I was stunned Theon wasn't on here, he should be top 10 easily on any of these lists. But realistically, this list seems more like his personal favorites than a best characters list, there's actually a big difference. My top 5 favorite characters are 5. Theon 4. Tyrion 3. Jaime 2. Jon 1. Robb. But if I made a top 5 best characters it'd be something like 5. Arya 4. Cersei 3. Jaime 2. Tyrion 1. Jon...and if I were to make my top 20 faves and best, they would look considerably different.

Richard Madden did an amazing job with the character but I think that some of the writing simplified his character and the circumstances his death, making him look like an idiot for going to the twins. In the book Robb had to get that army to save the north and not to take casterly rock like the show made it out.

I've always liked Jon but I've never understood the level of hype around him in the fandom. While is character development is good it is often quite predictable in the way he develops. As well as the fact that in the show even in the early sessions his story line feels a bit Hollywood. If you don't believe me just remember the scene when he climbs the wall. Both of which sets him apart in my opinion from what makes the rest of the Game of thrones characters great.

Just rewatched the series. At first I was going to say Tyrion but oh boy, Tywin cannot be surpassed. He is basically the real king of Westeros until his death. Smart as Tyrion, ruthless but astute as Cersei and I imagine in his prime days he must have been an incredible fighter, just like his other son. Not to mention not a single character could defeat him in a dialogue, not even Olena Tyrell. You add the absolutely perfect performance, and I mean that word, from Charles Dance and you get one, if not the best small screen character of all times. Best part was Arya as his cupbearer, there was so much calmness and wisdom in those scenes yet always the tension of Arya getting caught.

You probably won't read this but Sansa in my opinion is an incredible character. Remember what Tyrion said about her: Lady Stark...you might survive us yet. She became incredibly witty (but still naive due to being sheltered most of her life) at just 13 years old in the first season (in the series because in the books she is 11) She hid the fact she hated Joffrey for the LONGEST of times, until she finally confided in the Tyrells. Sansa went from a spoiled princess to an incredible woman. I do hope in the books her arc is dealt with better, because I felt that her transition into a powerful woman felt rushed in season 5-8. And the way Dumb and Dumber made Sansa say that she became stronger due to her abuse...WHAT THE HECKKKKKKK. On the contrary, sex*al abuse and psychological abuse WEAKENS a person...and we never really saw Sansa dealing with her trauma. In my opinion, she is the character that has suffered the most throughout the series. -Being beaten in front of everyone -Saw her dad being beheaded in front of her -Having to LIVE and say she loves the people who killed her father, mother and brother -Married to the dwarf(although Tyrion is a good person and was more of a blessing, but to a 14 year old child is unacceptable)...in the books Tyrion almost consumates the marriage🤢 -Being almost rap*d by random people in the streets -Queen Cersei being manipulative towards her -Little finger and his weird obsession over her -Being used as a pawn to murder Joffrey -Being married to RAMSEY, and basically being treated as a sex*al slave in her OWN home (in the series because in the books she is still in the Eirye) People don't understand what George RR Martin was trying to expose through her character...how the innocent get caught up in the power gane and they need to grow up faster. And the most important thing I believe George was trying to explain through Sansa is how a person who is considered a *pawn* in the games of more powerful characters, can learn how to play and become an important piece. George doesn't want us to underestimate Sansa and I believe her character will have an incredible journey in the books. Sansa isn't a warrior-like character like Arya, doesn't have dragons like Dany, wasn't educated enough like Tyrion...she was raised to become a proper lady and marry. She didn't have any knowledge about the game of thrones...she had the LEAST advantage out of all the characters due to being trapped in the Red Keep and being the daughter of a fallen noble house. And yet, just as Tyrion said...she survived them all.

No, I think your placement of Olenna is correct in terms of how high you put her in the ranking. Among ALL characters in this series, I could only "bond" with Olenna. She's strong, but not physically, she's intimidating, but not coz of her sword skills, she's a ruler, but not a queen. She always pulled the strings behind the scenes for her family. That trait alone - loyalty to the family - makes her above the rest (not saying Eddard or Cat didn't care for their family too, but they did it in other way). Unlike Tywin, who's also a remarkable character, she cares for her family with a soft hand, instead of pressuring the family, she tries to persuade, and at times even dismiss the opposing arguments. But she ultimately trusts her family in full, shown when Margaery told her to leave the King's Landing, even though she never would abandon her precious family, she knew to trust Margaery if she told so and even more - insisted with a concerned look. The bond of Tyrells is incredible, they're such a "perfect" family among others in Westeros. No rebellious teenagers like Sansa, no three-eyed cripples, no "sausage-cutting" maniacs, no bastardry (at least in the show). They were just a family of simple, yet noble people, properly raised by their grandmother with gentle, but iron hand.

Tywin is definitely one of the best antogonistic characters I have ever seen in any movie and show. He's so special that I can't compare to any others. I don't mean he is unmatchable higher but he is different. Tywin has power and wealth so he lacks empathy for others who doesn't. He just make me empathize a man who has no empathy. I think that Ned’s personal honor is his major flaw when it comes to power not only because it gets him killed, but also because his actions showed more concern with his own personal honor than for what was the best choice for the good of the realm. I think that to be a good leader you sometimes have to make decisions you don’t like and even sacrifice a bit of your personal honor when it comes down to certain decisions. Like with Jamie, I think of him as being a better leader because he sacrificed his own personal honor and reputation in order to save the entire population of King’s Landing. To me, he shows that while valuing your own personal honor is all well and good, when it truly comes down to it, you have to sacrifice a bit of yourself to help the most people and that valuing your own honor over everything else can ultimately be a selfish choice. Not saying that Ned is selfish, just that I think when it comes down to it, you have to be willing to put others above yourself, even your own personal honor if you want to be the best leader. I think Ned did that once with clamming Jon Snow was his bastard as his honorable reputation took a massive hit because everyone thought he fathered a bastard when in reality, at least 100% confirmed by the show, he did so in order to protect Jon, an innocent child, and he sacrificed a bit of his personal honor both internally and externally by lying to everyone about Jon’s true parentage and by letting everyone believe he broke his marriage vows. I think that these scenes are what make both of these men heroes and I think in some ways that’s kind of what George R.R. Martin is getting at with his books as life isn’t black and white, so neither should the decisions a hero has to make.

I love how the music switches into the "Gaunter O'Dimm" theme when Petyr Baelish comes on the list.

Petyr Balish is one of my favorite characters. I probably shouldn't like him as much as I do, but he is very charismatic considering how evil he is.

I cannot accept Jamie not being in the top 5. Jamie from Season 1 -4, absolutely amazing in acting, character development and his confidence and arrogance is appreciated. Even as a prisoner, he was great. Arya was good but for me, not better. My personal top 5: Tryion, Cersie, Jamie, Tywin, yes, an all-Lannister affair in the top 4 and lastly Jon.

Theon Greyjoy is tied for my favorite fictional character of all time, I think his arc was the best character writing I’ve ever seen, Alfie killed the role bringing such a layered performance, and honestly I’m just biased because Theon helped me learn a lot about myself, I don’t think the Reek arc was too long I feel like Theon is made up of three different characters in the show and each needed seasons to fully develop, WHAT IS DEAD MAY NEVER DIE

Glad to have Tywin and Olenna here, each being my favorite male and female character, their scene discussing the marrige of Cersei and Loras is just *cheff kiss*

The nice thing about GoT (early seasons) wars that I could watch ANY plotline and was like "Oh yeah thats interesting too". Sometimes I had my favorites but I could not pick anyone for myself.

I definitely would have had Theon and Davos on my list, otherwise no complaints!

Dude I just love it when you put The Witcher music in the background
