As someone who started reading King around 2010, I like his newer stuff a lot more than his “classics”. But I think it’s just a meme at this point; everyone thinks something years ago is so much better than anything new. Which is ridiculous. But nostalgia is a strong drug.

You could go into “If It Bleeds” (The short story) without really knowing King if you just want a good plot and don’t care about the characters. However, it’s an entirely different experience if you’ve read the Bill Hodges trilogy and The Outsider just because the character growth adds something to it. I read the Outsider without reading the Bill Hodges trilogy just because I didn’t know it was connected, but after I completed the BH trilogy I went back and read the Outsider and it was a lot better.

This is exactly my scenario. I read a ton of classic King like 10 years ago but got burnt out and stopped for a long time. When I finally got back into him I decided to check out the Outsider. It was great. Then I started the hodges trilogy and am just starting book 3. I'm definitely gonna have to re-read the Outsider after this now that i know where all the references came from

"People say Dark Tower is Stephen King's take on the Lord of the Rings, which is also pretty flimsy." Actually, Stephen King was the one to say that. You should check out the Kingslingers Podcast, Daniel. It's two guys going through the Dark Tower series slowly, analyzing the work as they go. One is someone who has read all of King's work, and he's even read the Dark Tower at least four times before this series. The other is completely new to King, and has maybe only read one or two smaller novellas from King. They do a fantastic job of going through the series, and the one who is new to the series (Matt) is very good at seeing comparisons to the Lord of the Rings. To name a few: Farmer Brown is very similar to Tom Bombadil with his placement in the story. The people of River Crossing (village right before the city of Lud) are old people that the Ka-Tet (Fellowship) meet and eat with prior to heading into danger (this was also preceded with Eddie believing that he would find good-people/elves in the city of Lud, but he was looking too far). The only way to beat Blaine the Mono in their riddle-off is to ask things that are riddle-adjacent (dumb Eddie jokes/ "what's in my pocket?"). Let's not forget that a major character falls into a pit under a mountain while saying an iconic line from the series, assumed to be dead, only to come back (as "the White" or being helped by "the Wight") later in the story. Matt has done a fantastic job calling out many similarities that really show that Dark Tower is King's reply to the Lord of the Rings, and I HIGHLY suggest you listen to it. They're currently midway through Wizard & Glass and it's a fantastic relook at one of my favorite series.

my favorite story was the life of Chuck. It made me feel some type of way i can't even describe; i was crying in public (while taking the subway on my way to college). idk, but it's so crazy how a story can make you change ur opinions and perspectives. honestly, i'm so happy that i took that book months ago, def something in me changed. I liked ALL of the stories but my order from favorite first is: 1- The Rat, I love when King writes about writers and writing. 2 - If it Bleeds, I like Holly and the other characters and already knowing them a plus, but also there were some really good lines in there, I thought. 3 - Mr. Harrigan's Phone, Enjoyable characters and an easy read 4 - The Life of Chuck, Interesting and different, but the reverse telling was confusing for me til I got it.

You can start off with the Outsider to understand the supernatural element to “If It Bleeds” but the supernatural element to Holly’s “world” started in “End of Watch”. Also, you’d get a better understanding of The Robinson’s family if you read the Hodges’ trilogy. There’s situations that happen in “If It Bleeds” that left me panicking due to how much I loved some of these characters from the previous books.

I think his Holly Gibney story was pandering to Hollywood. You notice at the end of The Outsider HBO adaptation how Ralph suggested she call him if any other "Outsider-y" kind of case comes along so he can help her out with it. I feel this was an opening to have a second season of the show. King wrote essentially a basic script for S02. The producers of the TV show can muck around with it and come up with their angle of the story.

This review is of my first video of yours I’m watching that just popped up on my homepage and I thought I’d take a look. I feel you given some fair opinions about this quad collection of short stories. As someone who has always believed in the right for everyone to have your own opinion (I turn 60 in this December) which means I grew up in a much less pressured environment for having personal opinions. I don’t envy you or anyone doing opinions about any topic these days with all the twisted thinking from decades of anti American brainwashing of all Americans. Kudos for having a brain all your own and not stifled by the trolls on KZbin who just love findings things to hate and cause conflict about. Now getting back to why I mentioned my age. I feel your opinions of what writings by S. King are best and those that are not using the lens of time when written as your filter or others you use as their filter. I’m old enough to be lucky enough to have had the opportunity to read (now I listen via Audible.com) because my eyes aren’t what they used to be and I enjoy those who have the ability to ‘perform’ the material. I began audiobook listening when the books were only available to the Blind through the Federal government and the few other private companies that came along back in the late 1970s. Those tapes were 1/4” wide tape on a 7.25” reel size reels. You also needed a special player that had a different play head and ran at 1 1 7/8th speed (one and one seven eighths inch per second) which is half the speed of a typical reel tape or cassette tape. They did this in this way to save space by using half as many expensive tapes. They used all four channels (aka tracks) to save money and be more efficient. You would listen to side 1 track A as normal, then without removing the reel, play side 1 channel B in reverse. Then you flip the tape over and do the same for the second pair of channels. If you can find a cassette and put it in a typical cassette player, you’ll hear forward and backward speaking at the same time. If I did Acid, I might have enjoyed it that way! LOL. Anyway, back to your opinion. Having not watched any other of your videos yet. I plan to check out how you think S. King novels, novellas, and short stories should be where to start to fully e,brace the very wide variety of material topics S. King has covered since his first published novel...Carrie came out in 1974 followed by a very limited local only to Maine residents of Salem’s Lot inn1975. Big dollar value to a mint copy of that first edition for those who collect or want to make money on eBay. I have to break down what genre of Kings writings you are interested in. The bulk is in some level of the horror genre, but he’s done some incredible suspense or plain drama works such as Shawshank Redemption as just one example of straight drama. Now as I’m thinking about what I’d recommend. I think I’m going to hold off until after I’ve watched your suggestions on how to get started as a new S. King potential fan first and see if we agree or where we might differ. I have some major thoughts about all King’s writings after his literal death for a few minutes. For any who might not know King was hit by a drunk driver in a minivan while walking on a main road shoulder near one of his homes in Maine. The news all said Stephen King had died until an updated report from the ER doctors and his wife could state that he was still alive, but in critical condition. Lucky for us fans and his family, he pulled through and did something very interesting with his brush with death in a few of his novels published not too long after this tragedy. I’m hoping I will find your reviews and comments about any books or other media you might discuss on your channel something perhaps you might wish an ‘Old Guy’ opinion whether we agree or mostly agree, etc. as perhaps another perspective as someone who lived through everything he wrote when it was new as well as which books are amazing as audiobooks and others for whatever reason are not? If you read this and feel it might be worth your time to contact me, I’m at MerlinFL34480 on Instagram or here in KZbin. I’m a retired pro touring and studio musician most of my life. But now with all life has thrown at me, I can’t play anymore...so I took up fishing in the past 3 years since I live on a brackish water canal here in New Port Richey, FL. So my channel in reverse chronological order has tons of fishing videos, a few clips of things that caught my interest, to all music videos of me performing in some of the tribute and basic cover bands I played in since 2001 when I moved from NJ to Ocala, FL which is a heck of a lot nicer, although without the fishing in the backyard which began shortly after moving here in November 2017. Whatever you choose, I’m now a subscriber and look forward to binging on most of your review videos of material or topics I’m familiar with and passionate about. Sorry for the long comment and I hope my suggestion of a team up of some type might appeal to you. I know we could definitely talk about many aspects of The Wheel of Time I can see behind you as well as S. King. Perhaps you like Kong’s, Crichton, Kevin J. Andersen, Hawke, Paolini, Lovecraft, Tad Williams, Ayn Rand, Tolkien, Clarke, Sanderson, George R.R. Martin, Patterson, Straub, Heinlien, Asimov, Guillermo del Toro, Ann Rice, S. A. Corey, Terry Goodkind, Clive Barker, Deborah Harkness, even J. K. Rowling, and so many more classic and current authors.

I started stephen king books with Mr. Mercedes after that I was hooked so far I've read 5 of his books (slow reader here) and in middle of 1 now and I've got a bunch stored that I plan to read afterwards😀 I think he's a great author but to each their own

Well, the Monkey Paw is kind of similar to "The Bottle Imp" So, he's not the first author to do his own twist in that kind of story.

I took several years off king novels and only recently got back in to them so I read The Outsider before I read The Bill Hodges trilogy but I will say I'm gaining a ton of character building and development of Holly from these books and now some things she says in the Outsider make much more sense to me. I've been putting off this one but now that I know the title story is a direct sequel to the outsider I'll have to

I will say I read the Outsiders Before the Mr. Mercedes series. And it was kinda enjoyable seeing Holly in the Mr. Mercedes book knowing what she would become in the Outsiders.

This was actually my first stephen king book and I remember giving it 3 1/2 Stars but also realising that he might be a favourite author for me. All of these stories seemed cool and fun but they didn’t just grab me, but what did grab me was his writing. The first one i remember thinking it was ok, im not really scared of books or movies, it takes a lot for me to actually be scared, but i do love horror stuff in general. The second story I remember being really conflicted, on the one hand absolutely loving it, I love weird stuff that has depth to it, where you realise that this not just tells a story but makes you ponder life in general. But i also thought that i missed just something, I couldn’t say what exactly, something holding this more together. Interestingly though i think about this story very often and don’t even know why. If it bleeds made me realise that it is a really good story but i think i just don’t like crime thrillers. I thought it was really good but just not for me. And the last one was just exactly what I thought king would be. So maybe this was the perfect starting point for me because from that day on i knew I love king and what i dont love about him and what i do.

Although I'm sure there are a lot of influences on the Dark Tower, I've always felt it's King's take on The Chronicles of Amber. It fits the real world writing timeline too.

I would give it a solid 5 or 6 out of 10. First off, Holly is my girl and I love her SO much and I will read anything with her in it. But it seemed majority of the stories just ended abruptly which I found jarring. That being said, there is a reason King is my favorite author and he is still doing us constant readers proud.

The analogy of a band releasing a great album in the 90s and people ignoring their newer work is literally the story of Weezer. Stephen King is the weezer of the literary world haha

I wish King would do some more novellas or even whole novels set in the Dark Tower universe. He has one short in Everything's Eventual and The Wind Through The Keyhole was awesome so I wish he would maybe do some more like that A quick suggestion, the best collection of short stories in a book I have read and highly recommend is Strange Highway by Dean Koontz which is funny cause I don't like ANY of his other books that I've tried but the stories in this book range from pretty good to friggin awesome
