There's a passage in his second novel "Salem's Lot" where his prose speaks profoundly about the small town. He writes about the characters of the small town, their demons, their lives, their struggles amidst their daily lives even before the Vampires. I remember the first time I read it, it was so beautiful because he essentially captures the heart, spirit, and guilt that the characters inhibit. He wrote about the crimes they did, the lives they lead, the gossip, the humility, and the spirit of childhood which he makes a Central point in his writing. You are transported to the imagination we've known from childhood, but have suppressed since we've grown. So pick up a book by him and start reading, but also take a look at his stories because they'll leave you one hell of an impact just like his novels.

I feel like King's horror is so good because he tricks your mind into building up the fear by itself. You're not scared because the monster is gross or because the gore is too intense (and normally, both of these things are present in his works), but you are scared because he has built up the tension to the point it feels like he is catering to /your/ specific fears, and your own mind is basically scaring itself.
@Griggboat
@Griggboat Жыл бұрын
Exactly, man builds hella tension in Pet Semetary. And the way he just puts shit out there before it even happened in the story made me admire him even more. Example: "gage who had less than 3 weeks left to live was smiling?" When I read that I was like wait what ! 😂

I've been reading King for nearly 16 years. Of all his stories the one that got under my skin the most was Pet Sematary... the overwhelming sense of inevitability was so potent. And the Tower... oh man...the Tower, every step of the journey was amazing.
@Merrick
@Merrick 4 жыл бұрын
The Stand would probably be scary right now, I read it 20 years ago and still have a fear of respiratory distress shining is scary, Pet Semetary even scarier Dark Tower is def fantasy, not a lot of horror in there. Talisman, Eyes of the Dragon are more traditional fantasy. If abilities/powers fall into the fantasy bracket then Carrie, Dead Zone, Thinner, Desperation, Insomnia and my personal favourite Firestarter are all good. While there may be some "meandering" and slowness, if you've read WoT you won't even notice

Well Sai King does say "if you want to write well you need to read a lot". He understands our fears and his writing is easy to read, because he talks like everyday people. As for his books, it's well known he sells them by the pound. I never read The Stand untill he finally did it unedited, then I read it...twice. Of course I love 11/22/63 and Duma Key but I live on the West Coast of FL so I could relate to a lot of the stories.

I had always thought that King was another of these "pump out massive numbers of bad books" type of authors. Like a James Patterson type. Picked up IT a few years ago after really liking the movie and happily discovered how wrong I was. You touched on exactly what makes him a great author. His characters are SO human, the pages just seem to fly by.

Ohh, one Stephen King book that I love that doesn’t seem to get as much attention is Needful things. I love how we get to see the petty grievances that fester in a community that are mostly really insignificant and silly but can lead to trouble. I also like that I think it comments on greed and acquisition as well with the usual supernatural King twists and turns

As a person who really loves the journey more than the ending I was kinda shocked when I knew most people don’t like king’s endings. I’ve read quite a lot of his books and quite the mix and I liked them all and loved few of them

Aside from a few straight out horror novels (Salem's Lot, The Shinning, Revival), I've always found that King's work had fantasy elements that puncuated the horror. And I didn't start noticing this until after I read the Dark Tower for the first time. I'll always have a soft spot for DT because it was the series that got me reading fantasy and...more importantly...the series that started me writing fantasy. As I've become more rounded in the genre I totally see the flaws in DT, but you can't deny the sheer scope King put into the epicenter of his Universe. Quick side note, check out some of Clive Barker's work, another author who is primary known for his spooky spookies but has written some incredible fantasy books (Weaveworld, Imijca, The Theif of Always). Another great video, thanks for giving me a bit of reprieve from all the craziness in the world Daniel! Stay safe!

You should also listen to some of his talks and interviews. Dudes pretty down to earth and funny with a f@cked up mind XD. He actually told a story about how his wife Tabitha told him that he had a story about 2 characters and one was held captive called Misery, and then he was writing what would be known as "Gerald's Game" where there was only one character captive, and she said that his next book was gonna be called Living Room Couch and it was going to have no characters XD.

Damn Stephen King's incredible prolificacy as a writer. When I was 19, I became obsessed with a 19th Century poem about a lone knight engaged in a hopeless quest, wandering through an endless wasteland, haunted by the ghosts of his past and the utter inevitability of his ultimate defeat. The poem was called Childe Roland To The Dark Tower Came, by Robert Browning. I spent months working on the foundations of of a sprawling fantasy epic, loosely based on the poem. It got to the point where I could recite all 34 stanzas of the poem from memory. Then I discovered that bloody Stephen King, one of the biggest selling authors of all time, had beaten me to the punch by about 25-30 years with his own sprawling fantasy epic, loosely based on Childe Roland To The Dark Tower Came. I read the series and enjoyed it, but to be honest I've never really forgiven him for allowing Roland to stand before the Tower without a horn to blow. Ah well. Maybe next time...

The Dark Tower tops everything. its my all time favorite book series and even the weaker ones in the series are still great to read. do you know, i am one of those who loves the ending, because its open ended and new Roland has his horn, so the next time it would be his last time. loved all of the Dark Tower books and the journey was breathtaking. i read like every once in two years The Dark Tower, not every year since its a long series. this series takes me about five to six months to read but those are the best months, done reading. best Dark Tower books are 3 and 4. what was your favorite? "Long days and pleasant nights!"

I love that just about any person can find something up their alley from his catalogue. I got into him through Dark Tower in high school because I wanted to delve into a different kind of fantasy world. My wife doesn’t really like fantasy or horror but really liked his coming of age tale Joyland which I also liked. Personally I tend to love his more intimately focused supernatural books, specifically The Shining and The Dead Zone in my older years. About to start The Institute.

King while being classified as a horror author is far more than that. Very few of his books are strict horror. He is the master of blending genres. His books while being a horror story will have a strong other genre added. normally Horror/ Sci-Fi or Horror Fantasy but he also will do Horror/Mystery. While you said The Dark Tower series is Horror fantasy I would say it is Horror Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Western since it has so many themes from all four in the books. His way of blending genres is why I like him.

I really enjoy Stephen King, he's a great writer in most cases. He definitely flops some endings and gets a little wonky at times, but I've read a ton of his stuff and I recommend him as well. I really enjoy some of his short stories, like those in Skelton Crew, including the Mist

My next king novel will be Dr Sleep then the Stand(for obvious reasons but my wife is in her second trimester and works at a grocery store so maybe I should hold off?). BUT before I can read those I need to finish The Rise of Skywalker novelization 🤦‍♂️. so many books so little time when you aren't in quarantine

I have read 97% of kings published works and my take on Kings overall appeal is that whatever supernatural entity is doing the terrorizing and however horrific it is, it's the human condition that is the most interesting.

Dark Tower is my 1a to Wheel of Time's 1b. Seriously, the ending of DT is the best ending to any story I've ever read, watched, or even dreamed up. It was absolutely perfect. Some people don't like it, but to me, it accomplished everything a great ending is supposed to have while making a huge point (a point that many who hated the end just miss or refuse to learn about life). I haven't read a ton of other King (The Stand, Eyes of the Dragon being the only other two) but man, DT was sooooo good.

I absolutely adore his writing style; it's easy to fall into the story. Anyone can enjoy his books, from beginner readers to bookworms. I struggle with books that are overly descriptive because i get easily distracted, so i just love the way King keeps it simple.

ive only read 5 of stephen king’s books but 3 of the 5 that ive read have become instant favorites (It, The Shining, and Salem’s Lot are in my top 10 of all time with It being my favorite of all time) and i wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. i agree that king definitely has an issue with pacing sometimes, but i think it adds to the charm of his work. for me, even when his books have hit a slump for me, i can still easily push through because of the characters and worlds he creates (especially with the giant interludes in It. theyre the slowest parts of the book and totally disrupt everything but they add so much to the scope of the story too, and the ending wouldnt be as good as it was if the interludes werent a thing, so ive come to peace with the interludes). and the connections between each of his works are so subtle but so tight and purposeful. hes remarkable.

I absolutely love Stephen King and I agree with everything you said. I think that the Dark Tower is my perfect example of "F this ending!!" but also, a book ending exactly how it needed to. I think that sometimes the endings are "weaker" though because he wants to leave them a little ambiguous. I am currently getting a friend into King books and it's so fun to see him through the eyes of a new reader... I read my first King book when I was like... 10...11? So it's hard to remember what it was like to first be reading them. Actually, now that I think about it... we had some cassette tapes that were the audiobooks of Skeleton Crew that my dad would put on on long road trips when I was like... six or seven. Yeah... my dad isn't a big believer in sheltering kids. 😅

My aunt, who I was very close to, is the one who introduced me to Stephen Kings work. She absolutely loved his books, and ignited my love for his books. As I got older we would trade Stephen King books with each other and discuss them. She passed away suddenly in 2017. Now reading his books feels even more sentimental and powerful to me, as it feels like the only way I have left to feel as close to her as I can get now.
