yeah i've listened to the whole audio series twice now, and if i had one criticism, it's that the way Matt writes his world descriptions, doesn't really click for me. The way he tries to visualize the locations they are in, or how this particular floor (Iron Tangle being the worst) works and is structured, just never really mentally panned out. I just kind of tuned out and instead focused on the emotional content between the characters when those chapters would come up. Otherwise I love the series to death. It's become the new Dresden Files for me, in that it's a series that I have actively pushed onto friends stating "You MUST read this"

This is a case where I think the audiobooks should be considered the definitive way to experience the story. I can't even imagine being able to sense that much punch and emotion and sense of constant emergency by just reading the books. Not that the narrative isn't doing a great job, but the performance adds so much to the experience...

@@MrGrimlocke I read the first few books and was amazed. Then listened to them all on audible. It was even better. They are easy to listen to because of the voice actor. Expanding upon this. He gives each of the characters their own energy, where like normal people it gets elevated and goes down as they encounter things. We hear him as carl grow from excited as he overcomes an obstacles or gets downtrodden as he encounters setbacks or sees the numbers of humans from earth go down. As well as (goddanmit) donut how she in non combat situations is calm and collected, getting excited as she gets attention, and then when combat comes around she becomes rather violent "DIE MOTHERFUCKER!!!" or even protective of the pet they get later on. Zev also when talking initially was in corpo mode, then when talking to donut got all excited when talking about earth shows

Got turned on to game of thrones cuz I started watching the TV show found out it was a book series started reading the books and while I was waiting for the fifth one I decided to Branch out and try a lot of different book series that George r Martin recommended. My first one was the malazan series. I read about 20 books out of that still have another like six or seven to go that got me turned on to the black company that's an amazing series too I love the way the magic system and just the visceral realness of it. While reading black company I stumbled across King killer Chronicle and that is when I found Sanderson. Finding Royal roads was purely an accident I was looking for somewhere to post my own book that I was working on and Royal roads came up found he who fights with monsters as my first book from Royal Rhodes and then there was Ben the prince without pants and lastly I came across dungeon crawler Carl.

I checked this series out because of your earlier video and I just finished. Yeah, this is going somewhere in my top favorite fantasy series. To write out all the things I love about it I'd need my own MUCH longer video essay. You didn't even mention the magic system or fantasy worldbuilding elements of the dungeon. Amazing use of a very hard magic system. Each skill and spell can do exactly what is written in the description, so those rules and limitations mean it's very understandable when someone uses their abilities in creative or cool ways. Like Carl using his immovable protective shell on a moving vehicle. Totally makes sense what he's trying to do. Protag feels genuinely intelligent and satisfying to watch!

It should also be noted that DCC fall into the trap of other LitRPGs and spins its wheels between set pieces and progress. Each floor has a clearly planned arc that exists in the fiction but also holds the story to account in a way that is often lacking. The fact that "The Hunting Grounds" and "Faction Wars" were set up in book one and are now being delivered on is EXTREMELY satisfying.

Goddammit Donut. Never thought anyone would/could beat Pacey, but GOD DAMN!!!! Jeff Hayes. Holy crap. And thanks Daniel for the recco - the premise sounded stupid, but I was wrong. Very wrong. What a blast.

Just finished this series, honestly I'm 150+ books read on goodreads. This one will stick with me and as a fantasy series stay top 5 for a while lol

Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of the few fantasy series I will always recommend to non-fantasy readers when we start chatting about books . . . as long as they're cool and have a sense of humor. It's just so entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny, and well done. The audiobooks are a DELIGHT.

Currently reading bk.3 right now. Wanted a series of stupid fun to get me back into reading after a long hiatus. Been a good read so far.

I can finally feel like a hipster where I read a series before it became "mainstream", absolutely deserves the love and praise it gets. Especially the audiobooks!

The Goblin himself would love the focus on goblins in the story

This is the power of an eye-catching cover. Daniel wouldn’t have even read this if he didn’t laugh at it at first like a meme.

Haha. I'm actually on my second relisten of the series and i love it even more. Jeff Hayes is a mouth magician... is that a thing? Mouth magicians? Well if its not a thing it should be and Jeff Hayes should be inducted into the mouth magican hall of fame.

I had just put Dungeon Crawler Carl into my wishlist on audible when He Who Fights With Monsters popped up as a recommendation and chose to go with that series instead… this video makes me happy I put this in my list to listen to next

And now I feel like I have to go back and listen to all 6 books via audio 😂 I am in the middle of the 6th book and so far 3 of them have been 5 stars (I got confused by the world in book 3 and didn't enjoy book 4 as much but both were still very good). A fantastic series

Do it, you won’t regret it. The different emphasis will alter your perceptions of the story a bit which will keep it fresh even though you are ‘rereading’ the same story. Plus it’s just a fun listen.
