The sound and background music on this one, at least during the intro, is too much! It's too loud and distracting, almost to the point I almost want to skip it. I love good intro music, but something went south on the beginning here, like maybe reverb or something else was set too high.

Also, just so you know... The Secret of NIMH is the reason certain sectors of the movie-making business discovered that there was a real space to compete in against the "mammoth" Disney and that they could do it themselves. This movie was the kickoff for filmmakers to compete against Disney in the animation field. Also, NIMH is a _real_ government organization, something you should be aware of if you are not. It's something you have championed previously and others have as well and is a fair issue in contemporary society. It stands for National Institute of Mental Health. (My own daughter is afflicted with Bipolar disorder and it is an extremely eye opening experience when mental health slaps you in the side of the head with a metaphorical sledge hammer. It almost broke me.)

It's weird that there are people that claimed the Harry Potter movies were bad because of characters having different eye colors and hair styles. If a source material is good, it should not be so easily ruined by such small changes. The new Harry Potter show is going to suck because it's just going to be a black mold brain Twitter rant.
@scotthetzer59713 ай бұрын
Don't want to argue against the specific example, but details like that can be very important to tone setting for an adaptation. If too many details that are routinely referenced specifically change it can make an adaptation feel very alien to the source material. For example, the Dresden Files TV show feels very distant from the books to me. It is fun and enjoyable, but from the moment I saw a Jeep instead of a VW Bug, it felt wrong. There were many changes that weren't just cosmetic, but the absence of the Blue Beetle just felt like a massive signpost.
@olorin38153 ай бұрын
@@scotthetzer5971yeah i guess it doesnt matter much if you switch out a regular car for another other than throwing off fans of the books, stuff like this tho where car is supposed to look goofy and stuff and you replace it with a BMW it just throws the story off
@ThexImperfectionist3 ай бұрын
I hear your point, but lack of attention to details often signals a greater disregard for the source material. One example was the first hunger games movie. Prim's cat was supposed to be orange and ugly. The cat they showed in the first movie was black and white. It felt like someone just said "bring me a cat" and didn't bother to specify. I will accept changes if they are made with good reason and in service of the material. But often they burst seem borne of laziness or (false) assumptions about what fans will or won't care about.

There is so much left out beside hair color and stuff. There are HUGE PLOT LINES that don’t exist in the movies that are in the books.
@kredonystus77683 ай бұрын
That wasn't why they were bad films, it's why they were bad adaptations, that was an example of attention to detail that didn't get transfered. For example it's a running theme that Harry has his mothers eyes to the point Snape references it at his death, but the actors for Harry and his mum have different colour eyes. There were whole plotlines and major characters that were dropped, but again that doesn't make it a bad series, just bad adaptations.

My biggest problem with "buy a physical version" when it comes to video games, is that a lot of the time these days YOU CAN'T. Even if you walk into a shop and buy a physical game for a PC, it's actually just a steam key. And that's for the 0.5% of games you can buy some kind of physical version for, most are only available digitally and often only through steam/ea/epic etc..

The trick to get children to read more, is telling them they're not ready or it's too scary, that way they'll read under the covers at bedtime, thinking they're breaking the law, which makes the experience so much cooler. I think the bigger gripe about physical owned vs digital is the price. Why pay the same amount for something digital that doesn't have to account for physical distribution logistics? All of that costs money and is why games and other media can be more pricey. So to pay the exact same amount for something that has relatively none of those costs is pretty lame.
@rowanwax3 ай бұрын
It's digital distribution. Website domains, server storage, and the proprietary locks. Tho honestly most of the cost is all the people involved, not the physical printing.
@ehsanrahee74113 ай бұрын
@rowanwax I don't doubt that, but at the very least it would be the same amount of distribution channels. It's just that physical things have more inherent value because physical space (that we humans can/do use) is more scarse than digital.

Just for a little extra clarification, the law requiring Steam and other digital retailers update their Terms of Service is one that passed in California. In case anyone was curious.
@HanaNoMaude3 ай бұрын
Adding to the Steam digital licensing story: the difference with games and what’s lead to this new practice/ongoing legislation is that some games - especially those that exist solely online and are reliant on servers in order to access the content - won’t just sit in your library in perpetuity. Whether because the servers stop getting supported or licensing issues (music, people’s likenesses, third party IP, cars etc) or the publisher just says nah we’re taking this back (…Concord a recent example…), there are multiple reasons that gamers of all ages and walks of life should be informed that they’re licensing access to software and not owning it. Even some games that come on a physical disc/cartridge nowadays require you to download part or even most of the game and don’t exist solely on the physical media thing you bought. Add to that the issues of piracy and preservation… yeah this sort of legal clarification is well overdue and only a small step towards what’s to come

I've not read the wild robot buuut the film is such an excellent showcase of the craft of animation and cinema that it's best enjoyed at a good cinema so i highly recommend watching it before it leaves cinemas

Adaptations don't change the source material. It's always still 100% intact and can be re-read at any time. Adaptation literally means change. Deal.

so after you watched the lord of the rings or harry potter, the main characters from the books still felt and looked the same as before? you must be one of a kind, special human being. the brain does not funktion like that. we see something and it sticks. you can not go back to what you read and imagened before. this argument is therefore bullshit and i am sick of hearing it again and again.

Dude. One Daniel to another (OK, its Daniël, but I ignore those dots). I never noticed the uneven hoody laces. Until now. And now I have neck cramps from my over-corrective head tilting. Thanks.

In Reference to The Wild Robot question. Short answer: Yes the book is worth a read first, but you need to enjoy reading middle grade or lower. Long answer: I work with kids and try to stay in the know of what they are reading so I gave it a try and I loved it! The mix of future and tech with the simple and purity ideas of nature is truly something that fills you with calm and makes you feel safe. while at the same time presenting some of the hardships of life like the TRUE circle of life in very appropriate ways for children. I will say I had a bigger feeling of warmth and connection to the book than I did the movie. The movie had to take a bunch of the big plot points and shuffle some of them around and that felt like it rushed a few of the characters arks and also some of the themes. It is still a solid movie that Dream-works can be proud of. I just wouldn’t say it is on the level of How to tame your dragon like I thought it had the potential to. Overall great experience. Movie 4 stars, Book 4.5 Stars and it should enter the modern canon of children’s literature. Also just a side note, Dreamworks made it and not Pixar. I know you probably figured it out and you don’t need to worry about it. My family has just been connected to Disney my whole life and that makes you super aware of all kids movies origins when they can affect you family’s job. And I was happy to see dreamworks get a win they hadn’t had an original win and a while and I am happy for them. 😊

If you haven't played Disco Elysium, I highly recommend it. It is a deep psychological exploration mixed with truly funny (at times) prose.

Looking forward to the Richard Swan book. Empire of the Wolf was a great series and I’m actually glad to leave it behind but stay in that world.

Speaking of non-rigorous adaptations that the writers probably didn't read the source material on; The Secret of Nihm is absolutely worth a watch. The book is wonderful and the movie ....shares characters with the same names? The movie is one of those great 80s animated movies in the vein of The Black Calderon that doesn't treat its child audience as stupid. Evil exists and is here, magic is creepy and cool, and your hero is just a little gal who wants to save her family through sheer determination. I'd compare it to the animated adaptation of The Hobbit in that it definitely hits a lot of the same points and notes, but I would attempt to enjoy this as an entirely separate thing from the book. Which sounds like you haven't read the book, so you should have no trouble enjoying it.

With the tomb raider changes this is the essence behind a remastered versus a remake. A remaster takes the existing game and graphics and just makes them better so they're closer to modern quality but still keeping their original feel and aesthetic. A remake is a complete overhaul of the game from the ground up. Final fantasy 7 had a remake where the story and concepts and such are the same but the graphics and play style and everything has been completely remade from scratch.

I think you're going to like the character/creatures in Bury Your Gays. That book for me felt REALLY targeted to my Supernatural obsession and subsequent disappointment. It was a cathartic read for me.

Iirc I think the I robot movie wasn’t meant to be an adaptation originally, it was a fully original script that they then changed the title of and added some references to the book so they could market it as an adaptation. At least according to the Wikipedia page I think that’s the case

The ultimate real time strategy game is Command and Conquer. When are they going to remaster that game?
