This mower was stored with the front end facing down, causing oil to get into the combustion chamber, resulting in this video.

I love of them smokey old lawn mowers. Those flat head Briggs and Stratton engines get better with age!

3:50 POP THE CLUTCH !!! lol. When that oil was spewing it reminded me of a friends junkyard build car. i Would have to push it to start and when it started smoke spewed out like no tomorrow.

There's probably nothing wrong with the motor on the mower base but it does sound like it has some piston slap or something as I can here a metallic knocking sound in the engine. Someone from the U.K. on here had the same oil burning problem as he only had the room to store his Briggs motor vertically as well. I have a 1988 Briggs push mower which my auntie gave me in 2008 which had a broken pull cord on it,it runs but is hard to start, smokes on startup & Lacks power. I am going to freshen it up with a new set of rings as its compression is 97 PSI,the nominal compression for one of them is about 120 PSI when the rings have broken in. Anything below 100 PSI,the motor is beyond help except if it is rebuilt, providing it is feasible to repair (i.e. if the cylinder is badly scored you may as well throw the whole motor in the bin). In my case though,I am confident that mine just needs a re ring !!!!
